Zero scholarship tight ends a positive?

Who would’ve thought spreading the defense out and getting our playmakers the ball in space(especially JT) and having the QB keep the ball on read options every now and again to keep the D honest would open up the middle of the field for big gains in the running game. It’s not like 95% of the fan base has been screaming to do this all year. Now if we could only use some motion we’d actually look like a modern college offense.
Mix in more crossing routes and less vertices and you are on to something

I’ve been saying the ol we have is finesse, going more spread without te’s can’t hurt

They can’t manhandle anyone.

Use the field and space instead of bodies, it’s not like our te’s are road graders right now. It’s never made sense to try to maul people.
The maddening thing is that Mallory and Brevin are both athletic enough to line up in the slot our out wide and really spread things out, but Noooooooo

I hope both Jordan and Mallory make complete recoveries. Both can, and will be, very special TE's.

That being said, it may have been a blessing in disguise with both of them going out. It's forced Richt's hand into making needed adjustments. Play calling was somewhat different when Jordan went out, and really different when Mallory went out. My concern is whether or not Perry can grasp new concepts in a weeks time because is obvious Richt will have to employ new strategies.

They have used both tight ends in the slot at various points this season but it's usually in obvious passing situations. I mean, it's not ground breaking to line up with a TE inline or in the backfield on first down and motion him out to the slot forcing a linebacker to have to shift out of run defensive position.

We should be spread regardless of the amount of tight ends we have. Mallory should never be the phone booth, brevin CAN, but these dudes are athletic freaks that should be mismatches in the slot against linebackers and safeties.

Rick is terrible at game planning, not that that is anything groundbreaking.

Man.. what? It wasn't a good game plan to set up or try to force the running game against a defense that gave up 492 (13.7 YPC) rushing yards to Pitt the week prior?
VT Gave up over 200 yards rushing for 4 straight weeks. You think a better game plan would've been a vertical passing game with a RS Fresh QB in his 2nd road start?
Their run defense is ranked 107th, their pass defense is actually much better at 67th lol
Force a running game? I’m sorry have you watched any UM games this year? We can’t run on anybody with a pulse. The run game didn’t open up until we spread them out cause we had no TE’s and actually passed a bunch on 1st down. It’s 2018, you pass to set up the run, especially when your oline is crap.

Would be a good opportunity to line up an OL at TE and take advantage of our backs in pass routes if we had a decent OC.

Anyone see if the OL took wider splits after we lost our TEs? One interesting thing about Mike Leach's Air Raid is that the OL takes absurdly large splits to stretch out the defense. I haven't seen a replay of our game, but would be interested in seeing if Rick adjusted the OL to accommodate more spread concepts once the TEs were no longer available.

Man...did you read anything I said? VT run defense was putrid. They had no pulse and were getting ran on Mia Khalifa style.

Have YOU watched any UM offensive games? Our coaches thought it was a good idea to scheme without the opponent in mind. So this game where they go into the game saying we're going to run first and use our TEs if it isn't there early? Yes. That's the proper thing to do. Not go into the game worried about getting your QB into a rhythm.

Like you said I think short term it works wonders but richt was saying in a presser they don’t have too many plays with no te spread or they haven’t practiced enough in that package , i don’t know take it how you want maybe it works for pitt next week and richt installs more between then and the bowl game because for not practicing it we certainly looked comfortable doing it
He'll need about 30 years to get it ready.

Hopefully the kids positive reaction to the forced changes in offensive philosophy from having both Jordan and Mallory hurt will be the epiphany that Richt needs to finally change his stale offense into a more modern version. How do you help him make those changes? By hiring a young, innovative QB/OC that can teach the old dog new tricks. I’m praying both Brevin and Will are ok, in the interim until they return (probably for the bowl game if this season), let’s run 4-5 wide and force teams to cover all corners of the field. Unless you’re Bama, maybe Clemson and OSU, you don’t have 4-5 CB/Safeties that can cover our speed. This should play easily into our hands, including rushing the ball as well. Cam seems tailor made for this type of offense; Perry as well. He thrived in it once our hand was forced. Imagine that...

8 rushes for 15 yards and 3 points scored in the first half. Those type of numbers should get your fired

We didn't have 3 points at half time....we had 17
Clearly meant 1st quarter. Which if you follow UM football you would know since Richts arrival, we’ve been outscored by 50 points in the first quarter and have only topped more than 7 points 6 times in 3 years over 30 games. Richt must gameplan it like that.

I'd like to see some of the stills and breakdowns from Roman, but after just watching the live feed...I want to say we've run the ball well with Hillery in, but its just a hypothesis and I am not sure I can prove that. Just...the times I've noticed him lining up as a TE, I seem to recall running well.

Yeah, I totally read your mind and knew that you meant first quarter instead of first half. Pretty frequent typo.
Anyways, none of what you mentioned suggested why any other scheme was better.

Please, go ahead and explain how coming into the game, based off VTs defensive weaknesses, that challenging their ability to stop the run early was a bad idea.

We run the spread, you won't see WR's going to Bama or wherever anymore, that's a fact. Reasoning, home grown talent would be unstoppable when combined with homegrown backs and college football is our beyotch again. Been saying this for years now.

That NFL game last night was fun. It followed collegiate offensive trends rather then NFL ones. Why reinvent the wheel when players get to the NFL, go with what they know and NFL defenses aren't designed to stop since they don't see it. **** good game last night.

Cause we’ve done it all year against some of the worst defenses and we can’t do it. Can you please explain how we started the game 8 rushes for 15 yards? Please for the love of god answer this question.
