Zero scholarship tight ends a positive?

With Richt ruling out both Jordan and Mallory for Pitt, it leaves Miami with zero healthy scholarship tight ends. I'm wondering though, is this maybe a blessing in disguise? I haven't had a chance to really watch the entire VT game (I was traveling and streamed it on my phone but didn't see everything) but it seemed to me that the offense really opened up towards the end of the second quarter and the entire third quarter once they were forced to go 4 wide every down. Perry looked comfortable in the more spread out offense and the running game blew up after doing nothing for much of the first half. Is it possible, at least in the short term that the offense is much better off without a tight end? I believe for the long term, tight end production is crucial for Miami but at least for now, spreading everyone out on every down seems to be working.

that's what I'm thinking. Go 4 or 5 wide all game and get your speed guys in space.

That was the impression I had as well. I know Langham is built like a TE, but I don't think he's physical enough. I think they just need to go four/five wide the whole game. Pitt's pass defense has not been that great, so it would attack their weakest area.

I did notice they had started using Langham as a TE in certain sets against Georgia Tech, but I agree, he's not a real tight end.

Langham also had a really bad drop across the middle on a perfect throw. He's got the size of a TE but rarely uses it.

^^^ This - use Langham in a pinch but go 4-5 wide for most of the game. It worked too well so Passa Rick might not run it against Pitt. Smh

Get Thomas pope Hightower Wiggins out there for some speed on the 4 wr sets. Top to bottom all traits being considered those are our best wideouts. Cager can’t catch or block. Lang is slow. End of story

Yeah freshmen wrs are at the top. Bet y’all didn’t see that coming a week before LSU. Losing Richards has hurt big time. He catches what cager drops all day and runs after the catch too

Like you said I think short term it works wonders but richt was saying in a presser they don’t have too many plays with no te spread or they haven’t practiced enough in that package , i don’t know take it how you want maybe it works for pitt next week and richt installs more between then and the bowl game because for not practicing it we certainly looked comfortable doing it

They had a great, momentum changing drive to close out the first half that featured Mallory multiple times.

That was pretty embarrassing I thought that because of a rash of injuries to some great kids who have stepped up all season that we FINALLY saw Richt forced to move to an open personal grouping and what do you know... the offense starting humming as our better athletes destroyed that overmatched injury riddled already talented deprived group!!

I do like using a TE/HB regularly because it forces defenses to keep two linebackers on the field and in the box and that can greatly open the passing game and offers mismatch opportunities for our skilled tight ends. Oddly enough, the offense is a lot simpler without one. The defense is either forced to go to dime personnel or move a linebacker outside the tackle box leaving lots of room to get gashed up the middle. Not using a tight end might actually help our running game.

The go ahead drive in the second was when Mallory got hurt.

Added bonus: only three OL penalties.

One of the announcers said Irvin Jr was on the field, but I didn't see him and I thought he was out until early December. Anyone know if they were correct? Thanks.

Interesting point OP makes. Let's see if it works against Pitt. As @orange&green84 points out above, VT had not practiced against this and couldn't adjust. Pitt has a week to prepare for this look. It will be interesting to see if we may have stumbled upon something that allows our athletes to thrive.

If they continue to have success on offense against Pitt and their bowl opponent, does this give Richt further reason for denial that his system will work? I want the Canes to win, but, we need a designated OC. Not a HC / OC.
