First, this is not a homer post. Let's get that out of the way. I have no idea if Manny will be successful here. During the offseason I put that percentage around 60%. Now it's probably around 40%. Here is my point of this post:
I have seen dozens of comments complaining about the offensive play calling. Specifically the lack of big plays, or plays to stretch the field. However, here are the things we have clamored about for years:
Winning time of possession with an offense that churns out first downs
Slant passes - for the love of God throw a slant!
Third down percentage above 50% or close to it
Jet sweeps
Those are 4 items off the top of my head that we have screamed for years. Well how does Enos stack up so far?
Time of possession - Dominated it in both games
Slants - Yes
3rd down percentage - Not good enough
Jet sweeps - Yes
So that is 3 out 4 that he has accomplished with a freshman QB and a newly installed offense. I expect 3rd down percentage to go up as the year goes on.
Has he called great games? No, especially Florida game and the first quarter against UNC. But my goodness, you can already see this offense is lights years better then last year.
So what have we not seen? Go routes, post patterns. Well we had that for several years with Richt. Yes we connected on a few a game, but please let me remind you how many 3 and out's we had last year. It was pathetically high percentage to say the least. We could not sustain drives and we were so lopsided on time of possession that we hurt our defense every game.
What Enos has brought is a balanced offense that keeps the chains moving. We begged for this for years. He needs to get better in the red zone, no doubt. We left points on the field, no doubt. This will improve. Think of it this way, if we had this offense last year we easily win 10 games. Enos is not the reason we lost last night. Whatever is going on with our Defense, it needs to be fixed. But please stop with the Enos bashing. This guy knows how to run an offense and we can right this ship if we somehow get a kicker that isn't scared to kick, and if we get this defense fixed.
