You All Need to Find JESUS Re: Mark Richt

He should be able to recruit just as well as he did at UGA, and should have a much easier time winning his division than he did at UGA. SOOOO many posters have said you don't need an elite coach at UM to win, but now don't want Richt despite his past success. I understand his perceived failures, but just like Butch at UNC isn't the same as Butch at UM, the same can be said about Right here vs UGA. I really think he would succeed here. Look at him compared to Golden. He will be a huge improvement.

His 74 percent winning percentage ranked fifth-highest among active FBS coaches, behind only Ohio State's Urban Meyer, Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, Alabama's Nick Saban and TCU's Gary Patterson.

/Ghost, delete this.

This says it all.

Unless we can get Urban, Stoops, Saban or Patterson no one should be complaining with Richt.

I will happily accept all his Georgia recruits as well.

Are there concerns about Richt as the HC, with the biggest one being why he didn't win the SEC East more frequently - sure, no doubt. Would it be ideal to hire a coach who was a sure thing? Of course. But let's be honest, how many of those guys are out there? Urban, Saban and probably Harbaugh. If we're not going to pay substantially more than TCU, Ok State or Baylor, then why would any of those guys come here when they are having significant success where they're at?

Just because we don't hire Chip Kelly doesn't mean we're settling. Hiring Mario, Chud or Schiano would be settling because we know that Butch is available and better than those guys. But hiring Butch isn't settling if we've legitimately interviewed other good coaches and decided that Butch was the best option (or the guys we interviewed decided they weren't interested). And hiring Richt is certainly not settling. As WTH set out, the guy has won at a very high level consistently over his entire career. How often is there an opportunity to get a coach with his credentials at his age?

Maybe Herman or Fuente turn into stars wherever they go...or maybe they turn into Will Muschamp, or Kevin Sumlin, or Al Golden, or another "hot" up and coming coach who doesn't meet expectations. Predicting coaching success is hard, so having a chance to get a guy who has proven to be consistently successful at a very high level is rare.

Ultimately, it's not that I don't share some of the concerns about Richt. However, I don't see how hiring a coach with his background can be seen as being cheap or settling.

Good post. There are a lot of similarities between Richt and Jimbo Fisher.

If he comes in motivated to win a title and rewrite his legacy, I'm intrigued. He said he really wanted to work with QBs again. Won't find a better one for his system than Brad Kaaya.

Fine, I'm cool with Richt.

But does he have the desire?

And btw, is there money left over for Assistants? Remember, it's not about Winning The Coastal. It's about getting out of the ACC.

That means we have to get past Jimbo first, and then Dabo.

Has done less with more then any coach in America the last 10 years.

WTH made some great points. But these are the real counter-arguments to Richt. Richt is the hot chick with the stinky pookyak. Looks great until you dig deeper.

One thing I mentioned in another thread is that you don't need to break the bank on an OC if you hire Richt. His one regret is not calling his own plays and being more actively involved in offensive coaching. This is the spot to bring in Dorsey as OC in name. Let Richt call plays and groom Dorsey to be a playcalling OC in a few years.

Color me tepid on all the mentioned candidates. They've all got a little case of that hidden HPV along with some real strengths.

From the WEZ. Take it however you want.

Alright this may be a long post, but as the only resident Georgia poster here I feel obligated to give you all a heads up on what I know about Coach Richt and the Georgia program in general. Some will be good, some will be bad, and hopefully it will be enough for you to form an unbiased opinion of the man.

First off, UGA’s administration is not a typical SEC administration in that there is a ton of red tape around the program. The SEC schools that are usually dominant are doing so, in part, because they have been given free rein to make whatever decisions they please and request whatever budget items they want and it will be approved, no questions asked.

UGA on the other hand, relies on an athletic board comprised of multiple individuals all with differing priority levels regarding the football team and athletic budget in general. These individuals do not want to spend money, especially the kind of money that it takes to be competitive in the SEC now. Georgia has always been middle of the pack budget wise, even though it makes money hand over foot.

Example, all of the competitive teams in the SEC have an indoor practice facility. Richt was promised one when he came on as a coach, but instead the department balked at building one and instead built a “half” facility (not kidding, the field is like 40 or 50 yards long) to be used by other sports as well (not just football).

In 2006, Georgia hired a new athletic director Greg McGarity. At this point, McGarity changed Richt’s role from a hands on offensive coach to more of a CEO role. Richt was supposed to generally oversee how the program, but not really get too hands on with the coaching. Instead, McGarity wanted Richt to be out shaking hands, kissing babies, and handling funraisers. This coincides with the last time he won the SEC (2005). It may be purely coincidental, or it may have caused some sort of effect.

This past year after our OC left Richt once again asked to coach the offense and QBs, and was denied. You can tell this from his “retiring” press conference where he indicated he’d like to be more hands on and coach offense and QBs again. From inside the program there has never been a doubt about his competitiveness or fiery personality once the doors are closed.

Couldn't have said it better.

I've watched a ton of UGA games over the last few years (friends went to UGA), they have a lot of talent and constantly underachieve.

THIS!

A good friend is a Georgia alum. To say he's been disappointed with Richt is an understatement. I'm afraid we would also be, in a couple of seasons.

All three finalists - Mullen, Butch, Richt - have question marks and eyebrow raisers.

All I'm saying is, based on the names we heard early in the process, and the fact that Urban/Saban/Patterson aren't in play, we should be pretty happy if Mark Richt becomes the next head coach.

We just got done with the Golden regime...preceded by Radio...preceded by Clappy.

The three finalists last time were Golden...Edsall...and Trestman.

Right now we are talking about Richt, Mullen, and Butch. To be honest we should all be doing jumpflips right now.

Agree, but we're hearing that the three finalists are actually Richt, Schiano, and Mullen. One of those names doesn't belong there.

Why do we want the SEC leftovers who are washed up now? You don't hire a coach who just got fired

If this is accurate, it would remove some of my concerns about Richt. Actually, it would remove most of them.

I know UGA fans have been upset with their offense for years ... And it probably coincides with the timeline of when Richt stepping away from play-calling.
