Xavier Lucas

Has to be appealed by the ACC. You have to think that’s happening.

I wouldn’t be super optimistic on success though - it was a BS call and totally not consistent with another identical call in the same game… but is that enough to invalidate it after that fact?

Yeah, neither of those calls — the Ole Miss one that was reversed and ours that was upheld — were legit.

The penalty for targeting is so severe that there should no gray area

Some of the national guys are saying it needs to be rescinded. We need that badly. We are in deep **** at CB and playing the Heisman trophy winner. We need Lucas badly from the first snap.
Still need Lucas back, but someone posted a vid of OJ and Damari on the field after the game and they made it pretty clear they would be good to go in the natty. (Edit: Brown actually said "If we are healthy" h/t @edge)

Hopefully OJ and Damari can get miyagi’d before the 19th.

The Ole Miss targeting wasn't targeting but if I had to pick between the 2, I would say the ole miss targeting was more targeting.
The ole miss one was more reckless of running into Mali… no attempt at a proper tackle just recklessly running into him helmet to helmet

Lucas had his helmet to the side leading with his shoulder,,

Agreed both shouldn’t be called but how you pickup the first and stand tall on the second is ridiculous when the game at that point was so big

Brown actually said “if we are healthy”, we will go. I feel like he meant to say we will be healthy, but he definitely said “if”.

It doesn’t even make sense when compared to the NFL. How are “amateurs” (they get paid now but still) punished worse than professional nfl players?

Ejection/suspension should be addressed separately like the nfl. Most targeting would never warrant an ejection or suspension in the nfl.

So let me get this straight…the team gets an automatic first down….15 yards and eliminating that player for the rest of the game because of an unintentional act?

This needs to be corrected in the offseason. Of course we’ll get screwed and not have him and now the idiots because of our example will realize how harsh the rule is

It’s not ridiculous when you’re changing the complexion of the game and subsequently the following game (albeit against a Big 10 opponent). Having that game covered by Big 10 refs was reckless and has real life/game implications. We are now seeing it and it is appalling. The ACC needs to get this reversed tomorrow so Lucas can practice with the 1s all week and prepare for a championship game like the starter as he should.

The rule needs to be changed so it's actually for a certain amount of time you're suspended if they're going to hold onto the suspension.

You get called for targeting on the first play of the 3rd quarter and you're basically forced to miss an entire game and it could cost your team 2 games.
Last play of the 4th quarter and you only miss a half basically.

Should be for 30 minutes of game time or something like that.

The punishment severity shouldn't change depending on what point of the game it happened in but it can basically double if you do it at the wrong time.

If called for targeting, the penalty should be reviewed, and if deemed targeting assess the penalty yardage but no ejection.
On Monday and independent panel reviews the film and then a one game suspension wouldn’t incur the next scheduled game
If a player gets a 2nd targeting penalty then an automatic ejection

Doesn’t the NBA have categories for flagrant fouls? Flagrant foul 1 and Flagrant foul 2.

Why can’t the NCAA adopt something like this for targeting. Have a targeting 1 where it’s unintentional helmet to helmet and nothing malicious. Team is penalized 15 yards, but player is not ejected. Then there is targeting 2 (which we seldom see) where the defender launches and clearly targets the opponent’s helmet area. Targeting 2 is deemed malicious and excessive contact with intent to cause bodily harm. 15 yard penalty and player is ejected.
