Xavier Lucas

They can appeal, and the conference will send it to the national coordinator but here's the catch. Steve Shaw is the national coordinator and he's buddies with all the other officials + their assignors - the Big Ten in this case. So if he were to overturn the suspension, its somewhat a slap in the face to the Big Ten officials and their assignor - Bill Carollo

Shaw walks a fine line, and honestly has a difficult job because he has no real authority, but it is not in his best interest to overturn this. Side note -> I have no doubt in my mind that Carollo himself was involved in that replay because this was a national semifinal game

I think it'll get looked at, but I'm not holding my breath that it'll get overturned.

Not a shock the big 10 crew tried to get back at Xavier Lucas.
The only refs comparable to the ACC refs were the big 10 refs this year. I was having PTSD with the reffing last night, although it always seems to start with the presnap penalties, then the flood gates open. The hold on the TE was bogus too compared to other blatant holds all night. Those two conferences need to get the reffing fixed.

They were very close to making that game about them last night. Which is unfortunate in a game like that.

My first and only negative comment until game..First ill say hopefully he gets the appeal so we can have him from the start.

But this kid needs to wake it up, he’s playing way too nervous and soft to me, the true freshman played with more juice than him.

Corners are supposed to be arrogant and full of confidence, idk what it is but his body language and movements has just looked so nervous to me.

Im not saying he’s been terrible but he’s definitely been the weak link on defense this run imo.

I’m always amazed at the breadth of knowledge on CIS. We have posters with knowledge or expertise in so many areas. Thank you.

The ACC can appeal the suspension portion to the NCAA’s national coordinator of football officials. The coordinator reviews the video evidence independently. The suspension will be vacated only if it is clearly obvious that the disqualification was incorrect (i.e., no targeting occurred).
Does the appeal go to the big ten because it was their officials? If that is the case we’re screwed cause we play a big ten team in the title

They need to get sensible with targeting calls. There are obviously different scenarios but they are all punished the same. A defender diving towards a receiver as he catches the ball and starts to fall down to the ground is not the same as a safety doing his best Ronnie Lott impression trying to take the head off a guy over the middle.

Targeting rules give too much discretion to the refs. It seems like none of them know what targeting is. This was the weakest targeting I’ve ever seen in my life. Toney got drilled with helmet to helmet in the ohio state game and this game. No call.

The thing I never understood with these calls is when a receiver starts to go down and it's very clear there is a timing issue with trying to make a tackle and the offensive player dropping there is no benefit of the doubt given to the defender. Hitting an upright player in the head is one thing. Hitting a player who is falling as the player is trying to make a tackle is almost impossible to control. There's nothing egregious about the hit AND the player started to fall as Lucas made the tackle. I don't know what the f*** they're thinking.

  • The NCAA has approved a procedure where teams and conferences can appeal the carry-over suspension if they believe the targeting call was incorrect. NCAA.org+1
  • The appeal process generally involves:
    1. The conference office (like the ACC office) submitting a request to the NCAA’s national coordinator of officials to review video of the play.
    2. The national coordinator reviewing the footage after the game.
    3. If the coordinator determines the targeting call was obviously incorrect, the ejection and its carry-over suspension can be overturned. The player would then be eligible to play in the first half of the next game. NCAA.org+1

🧠

  • This appeal is not automatic — it must be initiated by the team/conference, and approval is not guaranteed.
  • The goal of the appeal isn’t to challenge judgment calls per se, but rather to identify clear mistakes where the play didn’t meet the criteria for targeting upon further review. NCAA.org
  • Conferences handle the initial step and then work with the NCAA officials for the final decision.

jesus FML. The Bauman "hold" was just a baaad. The Holds on Bain late in the game that didn't get called... We were warned about Big reffing and Lo and Behold...
