Looking at what we have coming back this year AND the hunger from getting close to winning #6, but not quite getting there, I think the bare BARE minimum is playing in the ACCCHGM, and here's how I see it.

When you look at our ACC schedule and the team we are bringing into the season with all of that momentum and that desire to do what we didn't do the prior season in winning a natty when we should have (we had that in 87', 89', 91' & 01'), it's hard to believe that we'll have a big mid-season swoon like before.

Whether it was done grudgingly or not, most Cane fans acknowledge that Mario actually HAS changed for the better and HAS learned from his mistakes. We were supposed to fade at the end of this season, but we played a record number of top teams and beat them on the way to the natty. I believe that he will not allow the team to drop senseless games like we did this year.

Also, I've seen folks on CIS say that no way will we get into the CFP if we have 2 losses like this year, but that's only true if those two are ACC games and we didn't win the ACCCHGM. I think we will beat ND, but it will be an enormous challenge and they will be up for that game, as will we. We could lose that game, although sitting here in January, it looks unlikely because of our team and Mario's penchant for having us for the big games.

Barring an unfortunate rash of key injuries, I don't realistically see two losses in our ACC schedule. I could see 4-5 potential losses, but I don't see this team dropping one and then not rallying like they did this year.

Clemson is the big one, and arguably the biggest game this year. Ratings-wise, the biggest game is Convicts vs Catholics, but regarding us playing in the CFP, it's actually Clemson since on paper, they pose the greatest threat. Mario has us up for the big games, but on paper, you could see the ball bouncing the wrong way and this will be their Super Bowl this year.

If we were to lose one ACC game, we WILL be on the ACCCHGM. When was the last time an ACC team only had one ACC loss and didn't get in? I don't think it's ever happened. And, if we get into the ACCCHGM, Mario WILL have us up for the game and we will probably win in a route.

So, to wrap this up, I think there is a very high chance that outside of some heavy and crucial injuries, we will be in the ACCCHGM, we will almost certainly win the ACCCHGM, and then the only question will be - what seed are we positioned at in the playoffs?

Unpopular opinion. **** winning the ACC, I have no desire for winning a league that has treated us like absolute garbage since we joined it and has arguably held us back. Conference title games are pointless. If we got into a situation where we were 11-1 or 12-0 and had the option to skip the ACCCG and still make the CFP I’d take it. An ACC championship trophy means nothing to me as a fan. **** it.

Its the first round bye. Winning 3 cfp games vs 4. It matters

Awful take. ACC trophy means an automatic bid and likely a 1st round bye. Without it (and let’s say a loss at ND during the season) means we’re staring at 2 losses and may be left out of the playoffs.

This. People will argue that it’s the same amount of games. True. However. You’d have theoretically replaced a tamu with Virginia. Much less physical. Your ACC champ opponent is going to be easier than a mid range playoff team. Because you can’t count on like a jmu or Tulane being there

Are the byes still tied to the conference champs? No

Miami has a very weak schedule: think Indiana 2025&2026. We likely play 2 ranked teams before Charlotte.

We need to roll into the cfp 13-0

Winning the ACC doesn't give us a first round bye. We'd still need to be a Top 4 seed. P4 champs just get auto bids this year, not auto byes.

They changed the rule to make it that the 4 P4 leagues get auto-bids?

Remember that didn't happen this year, Duke won the ACC and was left out. I hadn't seen that they changed that rule.

Yes they changed it.

4 P4 champs and highest ranked G5 team (doesn't have to win their conference) get auto-bids.

Also changed the pay structure..

It’s not just the auto-bids that will change. The money distribution will, too. Over the first 12 years of the CFP, the Power 4 conferences equally split roughly 80 percent of the pot, adjusting to a per-school basis after conference realignment.

Now, multiple sources briefed on the revenue model at the time confirmed the new breakdown to be roughly 29 percent annually for both the Big Ten and SEC (more than $21 million per school), 17 percent for the ACC (around $13 million each), 15 percent for the Big 12 ($12 million each) and 9 percent for the Group of 6 conferences collectively (around $1.8 million per school). Oregon State and Washington State will each receive around $3.6 million as part of an addendum signed later. Those conference percentages were based on previous CFP appearances among member schools in each conference.

There also will no longer be performance bonuses for advancing in the field for most teams. Miami earned around $20 million for its run this season. Next year, it will be a flat number. The team at the bottom of the SEC or Big Ten standings will earn more than the top teams from other conferences that make the field. That financial layout was one point of Florida State’s lawsuit against the ACC.

Notre Dame will receive more than $12 million annually, with a $6 million boost for making the field, putting its payout near the Big Ten/SEC levels in those years it earns an invite.

All of this appears short-term, as both Big Ten and SEC officials want to expand the field beyond 12. If that eventually happens, there may need to be another adjustment to these details.

No, they're still sticking with straight seeding. The p4 champs get auto bids, but not byes. If this next years rules were applied to last year, ND would've been the 10 seed, Tulane would've been the 11, and Duke would've been the 12. We would've been left out.

I'm like 90% there with you, but I would like to win this thing once, check that box (just like winning the Fiesta Bowl) and then just focus on the CFP. I do think they will stop having these championship games for the P4, because there's far more to lose than win. Those championship games were great when we didn't have a playoff, but now they look to hurt more than help.

All that said, I'd like to win that game once - this year - and then have them just award a champion with the idea that the main thing is the playoff.

I agree with everything in this post! except, we need to at least win this **** conference once before we leave in 2030 or when ever we leave!!
