Looking at what we have coming back this year AND the hunger from getting close to winning #6, but not quite getting there, I think the bare BARE minimum is playing in the ACCCHGM, and here's how I see it.
When you look at our ACC schedule and the team we are bringing into the season with all of that momentum and that desire to do what we didn't do the prior season in winning a natty when we should have (we had that in 87', 89', 91' & 01'), it's hard to believe that we'll have a big mid-season swoon like before.
Whether it was done grudgingly or not, most Cane fans acknowledge that Mario actually HAS changed for the better and HAS learned from his mistakes. We were supposed to fade at the end of this season, but we played a record number of top teams and beat them on the way to the natty. I believe that he will not allow the team to drop senseless games like we did this year.
Also, I've seen folks on CIS say that no way will we get into the CFP if we have 2 losses like this year, but that's only true if those two are ACC games and we didn't win the ACCCHGM. I think we will beat ND, but it will be an enormous challenge and they will be up for that game, as will we. We could lose that game, although sitting here in January, it looks unlikely because of our team and Mario's penchant for having us for the big games.
Barring an unfortunate rash of key injuries, I don't realistically see two losses in our ACC schedule. I could see 4-5 potential losses, but I don't see this team dropping one and then not rallying like they did this year.
Clemson is the big one, and arguably the biggest game this year. Ratings-wise, the biggest game is Convicts vs Catholics, but regarding us playing in the CFP, it's actually Clemson since on paper, they pose the greatest threat. Mario has us up for the big games, but on paper, you could see the ball bouncing the wrong way and this will be their Super Bowl this year.
If we were to lose one ACC game, we WILL be on the ACCCHGM. When was the last time an ACC team only had one ACC loss and didn't get in? I don't think it's ever happened. And, if we get into the ACCCHGM, Mario WILL have us up for the game and we will probably win in a route.
So, to wrap this up, I think there is a very high chance that outside of some heavy and crucial injuries, we will be in the ACCCHGM, we will almost certainly win the ACCCHGM, and then the only question will be - what seed are we positioned at in the playoffs?
