After Wednesday’s drills, QB Jarren Williams touched on the poor team practice that had head coach Manny Diaz animated.

“Coach wants guys that are going to compete every play, every drill, every down, and that’s our standard,” Williams said. “When we’re any less of that standard he’s going to let us know like he did today in practice. He called us all out, let us know we’re not hitting the standard.”

Is it disappointing to still be having these types of practices after a down game vs. Central Michigan?

“It’s disappointing for sure,” Williams said. “We have three good days, then a day like that. We have to be more consistent.”

Right now, the Hurricanes offense is 128th in the country on third downs, converting just 23.3% of their attempts. The team is taking steps to correct those issues, and Williams feels as if part of the problem is UM’s demeanor on the field.

“I think it’s really an intensity thing. We can’t take any plays off. Watching the film, we just have to do a better job of keeping that intensity from first and second and carry over to third down. When we get to third down we really have to lock in because that’s when we have to convert. We’ve watched the film, have been correcting the mistakes we made. They’re all fixable things.”

After watching the film, Williams also mentioned that he feels he needs to take off and run more instead of trying to make throws that aren’t there.

“There was one play (vs. CMU) I stepped up, stepped up, stepped up, no one was open, I had a lot of green grass in front of me, I tried to force it in there,” Williams said. “I could have easily picked up the first down.”

Does he have a preference between taking snaps from under center and taking snaps from shotgun?

“Not really. Under center I haven’t done in a while, since I was 6, 7 years old, but I like it, and I like being in the gun, being versatile,” Williams said. “It’s challenging (seeing the field), something I’m still trying to get better at - make those good ball fakes, get my head around quick.”

Crazy how Enos didn't implement the zone read option -- especially after seeing it work at Bama. Aside from Jarren picking up the first down after scanning the field I would've liked designed run plays considering his speed.

As far as intensity, it's as clear as day when you look at the tape. A tub of Chobani yogurt would put up more of a fight than our soft *** OL.

Looking at Jarren QB and now reading his comments actually validated my thoughts: he appears robotic w his mechanics. Like typically when u see a QB go through progressions, it looks natural. What he described on that one play where he could’ve ran, but he stepped up, stepped up, stepped up then tried to force a throw, in my head I was like dang that looked like a clip from practice. It didn’t look authentic.

We have the potential man but 3 things are obvious, to me:

1. We gotta stop going under center. Clearly JW nor any of our QBs have ran this archaic version of football, so if that’s not working, throw it out.

2. Jarren has Enos in his head. He’s not playing QB, he’s playing the QB Enos wants. He’s not running, he’s doing that step up move....Jarren literally looks like a NCAA 95 QB sometimes. He doesn’t look naturally comfortable.

3. Enos gotta sacrifice his precious completion % by stretching the field. The field is a box right now, and any def w/ a pulse sees that and are containing us.

I hate bye weeks after a **** poor performance. I’m really anxious to see how we return to field and if Enos curtails the O to fit the personnel he’s inherited.

Rell you don’t think Jarren will look more comfortable as he get more experience..like most QBs. That’s usually how that works. Especially when your getting hit up side the head every other drop back. Start seeing ghost. I think at times Jarren sits back and tries to trust the line and go through progressions.

Imo Jarren is not stretching the field. Especially on the edge. But those opportunities have been there for him to take those shots. Now maybe that him being gun shy, or maybe that’s how Enos has him trained. Gotta take full account he’s only a RS fresh. He’s gonna look more n more comfortable back there as the year goes on.

Lastly I wouldn’t have jarren run any reads or designed runs unless it’s in the green zone, 25 and in. I’d rather us use Tate or go full wildcat if we use it outside the red zone

How about working on "when Jeff Thomas is going to be wide open coming out of his break, throw it to him on time and score more TD's".

Sometimes, those QB runs are just too good not to take. Doesn't have to be designed runs, but when you drop into the pocket and see nobody in front for ten yards or more, take it and slide. That puts a lot of pressure on a defense. Some designed runs are important too. I'm not saying get Jarren hurt, but **** if Watson didn't run it what felt like 20 times a game and never got hurt in college. Besides, we've got some good backups.

I'm also tired of the freshman/redshirt freshman excuse. Teams all over the country are playing young guys and winning big games right away. I think in today's football, you pretty much know what you've got in a QB within the first few games. Sure they can progress and get better at the edges, but they basically are what they are by the time they've been on campus for 18 months.

Going to your last sentence. This whole gd season feels like deja vu. Waiting and hoping that the next time we see our team on the field, the coaches have acknowledged and addressed the shortcomings that we all see.

Who’s playing freshman and winning big? Tua and sunshine both top 5 picks I can’t expect that type of play from a freshman. But jarren is the top fresh QB rn I’m CFB

Jarren does need to be less averse to running when the pocket breaks down. Wasn't there a report he hit over 20 mph during practice before the season? It's not like he doesn't have athleticism.

Sometimes he looks like he is in slow motion back there. I admire the fact that he stays in the pocket with eyes downfield as things break down, but with this oline he needs to maybe not go past his second read. If that is not open take off and make something positive happen.

We knew what we had when he got here. He was an early enrollee and there were reports in his first Spring game that he looked the most natural and threw the best (most catchable) ball. Then, except for one series against Savannah State, he redshirts. Makes you wonder what the **** we did with him developmental-wise since he's been here.

JW is so controlled in the Enos system, that he may be scared to not follow the rule book. If he runs and gets stopped, he may be worried in explaining to Enos why. This VT game is going to be a good indicator against Foster's D.

So, don't expect any changes to the offense.

Let's keep playing in a phone booth, having our QB who is slow to read the field and hasn't played under center since he was six continue to play with his back to the field, and provide the opportunity for the defense to line up as many potential pass rushers as close to the QB as possible.

SMMFH...

I just don't get how anyone can still be optimistic.

He can still make 2-3 reads before running. He just needs to make his reads faster. He stares in one area for too long and takes too long to process information. This is why I keep saying that **** needs to make things simpler for him. He's got to speed up the information processing and decision making. Part of that is the timing of the plays also. There's no reason to take up the first half of the time he is going to have in the pocket executing an elaborate, back-to-the-field fake handoff on 3rd and anything longer than 1-2 yards. It's insanity.
