I hope coaching favoritism and obstinance are not factors here.
Mario and Hetherman want to win. Whether we agree or disagree with their decisions, those decisions are driven by their desire to win. If they believed Wiley or any other player could help them win, then those players would be playing. Thornton has a nice NIL value, and he wasn't cutting it, and what happened? Right, they sat his *** because he wasn't cutting it.
Toure and Smith have their limitations (that's putting it lightly), but they must be doing something (or the other LBs are ******* up so badly that they can't be trusted) that convinces the coaches to keep putting them out there.
We are scouring the 2027 class for LBs and have more guys coming in than going out, which I think speaks volumes of what the coaches think about what's in that room.
Wiley has been given opportunities to earn playing time. During the spring, they even experimented with him as an edge player like Arvell Reese in order to take advantage of the kid's physical traits. There's a reason we aren't seeing that experiment live on Saturdays.
Wiley and a few others who more than likely will transfer should probably start looking in the mirror and ask themselves if they are doing enough to prove the coaches wrong. None of us know what's going on behind the doors, but if these guys aren't living in the film room, and not maximizing their practice reps then it's on them for why they aren't seeing more opportunities.
We can't point to freshmen snap counts (2nd in the nation) as a positive and then turn around and cry favoritism at the same time. Mario has shown he will play the best guy for the job. Dylan Day was likely thinking he would be a starter or playing starter minutes, but JJ Dunnigan shows up and snatches Day's job and reps. Day hasn't cried online about it, and everything we've heard about Dunnigan is he approaches his preparation like a pro.
