He needs a year to get bigger and would love to be able to redshirt but when he signed I envisioned him being an animal on special teams with the size, speed and athleticism just like Homer did last year.

Agreed. At this point, though, if it's between Wilder losing his RS and giving Mccloud a break on certain specials, I launch Wilder's RS into a massive fire.

Wilder, Smith, Bandy, Thomas are going to light it up on specials imo/

We'll see how he's worked into the offense, but Jeff Thomas should theoretically be a freakshow on ST, too. If he weren't a potential superstar WR, he would likely make a really intriguing CB prospect. All that means is, with his attributes, he'd likely make an incredible Punt Coverage gunner, KO coverage guy, PReturner, KOReturner.

Wilder is an older dude. He'll make gains quickly.

This is another example of the South Florida plus athlete who wasn't maxed out physically in HS either in the gym or from a nutrition standpoint. Then they get to college and make all the gains. Contrast that to some of those dudes who play HS football in Texas at HS with college level facilities. They're already maxed out by the time they get to college.

I was never worried about Wilder in terms of his weight and athleticism. I do think he's going to take time to adjust to being a true LB, not just a rushing specialist. Gotta use him on STs, so I agree he's not red-shirting. But he really needs a full four years here, and may have benefited from a shirt if we weren't below 70 quality guys on roster right now.

Wasn't he used as a linebacker more in his first couple of years at carol city and then moved to dends because of injuries of other players?
 
Wilder needs to play. Love he attitude of bringing in kids to play and play a role early.

IMO you only redshirt for injuries and the occasional project player.

Man, I miss those days when players could take off their helmets as they crossed the back line of the endzone after running in a big score. Who TF did that hurt??? Seriously, who? Effin NCAA man...
