Why we're really screwed

If Joe Fan can recognize that Rick is running an antiquated scheme with limited route combinations, zero creativity or pre-snap motion, and predictable play calling, pretty sure recruits who want to end up in the League have noticed too.

We've already reached the point where can't simply out-talent teams like UVA, imagine how fun it's going to be once Diaz jumps ship and we're back to convincing ourselves that SoFla 3-stars are high 4-stars anywhere else in the country because Rick's stubbornness will prevent any elite talent from even considering UM.

If he doesn't swallow his pride and make some significant changes to between now and the UF game next year, it's going to be another decade of Shannon/Golden results on the field.

I really see three scenarios:

1. Best case scenario is Richt goes out and hires a Kendall Briles-esque oc. An innovative modern mind that will make our offense hum. But as has been hashed out repeatedly, that's not likely because of multiple things: Richt has emphatically stated that he wants to call plays and be the oc, and it would require someone from the offensive staff leaving (Jon Richt or Thomas Brown) and at this point it's hard to envision who that would be. Furthermore, even if Richt decides to hire an oc, he has to hire the right one. What evidence is there that he would hire a Kendall Briles or the guy from Utah State? Does Richt have any sort of track record of going out and hiring a guy like that? I'm guessing no, but this is more of a question since I haven't really researched all of Richt's oc hires. Richt going against everything he has said, deciding to hire an oc, AND making the right hire of a young innovative offensive mind is a very, very low odds event.

2. Richt decides he wants to learn and update his offense. Bring it into the 21st century. Perhaps he will visit the rams or chiefs in the offseason. Or consult with urban. So on and so forth. I think a lot of people would be excited about that. Here's why I don't think that would work. It's one thing to go and learn about an offense, play design, etc. But you still have to implement it. You have to teach it. You have to gameplan. You have to call the plays. Richt can talk to others and pick their brains all he wants but at the end of the day no one is going to hold his hand and do those things for him. He has to do it.

So, in his three years of calling plays, have you seen anything that makes you feel confident in his scouting of other teams defenses? Gameplanning? Attacking their weaknesses? Calling the right plays at the right time? Being unpredictable with the playcalls? I haven't. I hate to say it, but Richt kind of strikes me as an older gentleman whose best has passed him by. Not quite as sharp as his younger days. Diaz having to tell him not to score a td against fsu was alarming. Richt not addressing special teams at all this offseason after how bad it was last year showed me he was out of touch.

3. Richt hunkers down, keeps the offense the same and tries to get the players to execute it better and tries to improve with better personnel.

Number 3 is most likely. Then 2 and then 1 is a long shot. The problem is that number 1 is the ONLY option that fixes our problems.

So if I read all that right, and I'd like to think I did.....you're saying we're basically F'ed with 47 penises

ALL of this points back to a a clueless, apathetic, inept administration that doesn't care about winning and won't put any heat on the man. All of this can easily be solved with a meeting between an actual REAL Athletic director, with REAL power, and a REAL understanding of what it takes to win and coach Richt where's he's basically TOLD an OC will be hired.

But we all know none of that will happen. Perpetual purgatory is upon us.

Another possible scenario, albeit a small one, is Richt leaves the staff intact but realizes his shortcomings as a play-caller and turns those responsibilities to Thomas Brown.

Not saying it's a good option, just that it's a possibility.

That's exactly the option I'm terrified of and the likely one that happens.

Even in that scenario, make no mistake it will still be Richt's offense and he'll be in Brown and/or his son's ear.

To me, that's an even worse option for us since it would in essence buy him more time with the artificial external appearance of "change" to appease the masses.

I think this is the most likely scenario. No better way to maintain total control than to promote one of the offensive assistants that he's been grooming. Exactly how it went down at UGA.

This was my argument based on his career at Georgia. but MANY pointed to SEC championships (2002 and 2005) as "evidence" that he was a championship coach. Many of those also loudly proclaimed that you can't expect Georgia to compete for national championships (good call, see last year, a.k.a. 2 years post-Richt), so Richt was at a disadvantage there.

I'm not piling on Richt because he is about what I thought he would be AND we cannot overlook what he has done relative to both facilities and forcing the administration to become more competitive in terms of resources. We should all thank him for that. As far as winning us a national title, I never thought that was going to happen under the Richt regime.
Nobody wants to hear the truth. But truth is, Canes will always be a middle of the road team. Richt is a good coach, but he won't take a team to the promise land.

Fck. We should've just hired Leach and let him spend on a stud DC. Meanwhile, College Game Day is going to Pullman this weekend.

I think he's already doing this

If an OC is hired that means someone is fired. Who would that be? Best case scenario is Jon leaves and Dorsey is hired and takes on OC/QB coach. I don’t see that happening.

True. But that kind of falls under my scenario 2 or 3. Richt would still be in charge.
