I really see three scenarios:
1. Best case scenario is Richt goes out and hires a Kendall Briles-esque oc. An innovative modern mind that will make our offense hum. But as has been hashed out repeatedly, that's not likely because of multiple things: Richt has emphatically stated that he wants to call plays and be the oc, and it would require someone from the offensive staff leaving (Jon Richt or Thomas Brown) and at this point it's hard to envision who that would be. Furthermore, even if Richt decides to hire an oc, he has to hire the right one. What evidence is there that he would hire a Kendall Briles or the guy from Utah State? Does Richt have any sort of track record of going out and hiring a guy like that? I'm guessing no, but this is more of a question since I haven't really researched all of Richt's oc hires. Richt going against everything he has said, deciding to hire an oc, AND making the right hire of a young innovative offensive mind is a very, very low odds event.
2. Richt decides he wants to learn and update his offense. Bring it into the 21st century. Perhaps he will visit the rams or chiefs in the offseason. Or consult with urban. So on and so forth. I think a lot of people would be excited about that. Here's why I don't think that would work. It's one thing to go and learn about an offense, play design, etc. But you still have to implement it. You have to teach it. You have to gameplan. You have to call the plays. Richt can talk to others and pick their brains all he wants but at the end of the day no one is going to hold his hand and do those things for him. He has to do it.
So, in his three years of calling plays, have you seen anything that makes you feel confident in his scouting of other teams defenses? Gameplanning? Attacking their weaknesses? Calling the right plays at the right time? Being unpredictable with the playcalls? I haven't. I hate to say it, but Richt kind of strikes me as an older gentleman whose best has passed him by. Not quite as sharp as his younger days. Diaz having to tell him not to score a td against fsu was alarming. Richt not addressing special teams at all this offseason after how bad it was last year showed me he was out of touch.
3. Richt hunkers down, keeps the offense the same and tries to get the players to execute it better and tries to improve with better personnel.
Number 3 is most likely. Then 2 and then 1 is a long shot. The problem is that number 1 is the ONLY option that fixes our problems.
