Why we're really screwed

I really see three scenarios:

1. Best case scenario is Richt goes out and hires a Kendall Briles-esque oc. An innovative modern mind that will make our offense hum. But as has been hashed out repeatedly, that's not likely because of multiple things: Richt has emphatically stated that he wants to call plays and be the oc, and it would require someone from the offensive staff leaving (Jon Richt or Thomas Brown) and at this point it's hard to envision who that would be. Furthermore, even if Richt decides to hire an oc, he has to hire the right one. What evidence is there that he would hire a Kendall Briles or the guy from Utah State? Does Richt have any sort of track record of going out and hiring a guy like that? I'm guessing no, but this is more of a question since I haven't really researched all of Richt's oc hires. Richt going against everything he has said, deciding to hire an oc, AND making the right hire of a young innovative offensive mind is a very, very low odds event.

2. Richt decides he wants to learn and update his offense. Bring it into the 21st century. Perhaps he will visit the rams or chiefs in the offseason. Or consult with urban. So on and so forth. I think a lot of people would be excited about that. Here's why I don't think that would work. It's one thing to go and learn about an offense, play design, etc. But you still have to implement it. You have to teach it. You have to gameplan. You have to call the plays. Richt can talk to others and pick their brains all he wants but at the end of the day no one is going to hold his hand and do those things for him. He has to do it.

So, in his three years of calling plays, have you seen anything that makes you feel confident in his scouting of other teams defenses? Gameplanning? Attacking their weaknesses? Calling the right plays at the right time? Being unpredictable with the playcalls? I haven't. I hate to say it, but Richt kind of strikes me as an older gentleman whose best has passed him by. Not quite as sharp as his younger days. Diaz having to tell him not to score a td against fsu was alarming. Richt not addressing special teams at all this offseason after how bad it was last year showed me he was out of touch.

3. Richt hunkers down, keeps the offense the same and tries to get the players to execute it better and tries to improve with better personnel.

Number 3 is most likely. Then 2 and then 1 is a long shot. The problem is that number 1 is the ONLY option that fixes our problems.

I tried to tell some of y'all after the LSU bludgeon. And I was downvoted for it. Richt is good enough to get you 9/10 wins a season. But he won't win a national title here at Miami. Yet I'm proven right again.

We are a good OC away from being dangerous. If Richt wants to retire here, he'll make the adjustments. If not he will lose a championship starved fan base that will get real nasty real fast if adjustments arent made. Get Briles or Kingsbury if hes fired asap!!!!!!!!

I would guess that every team in P5 football shares 70-80%+ of the same plays. Can Richt get another 10% of plays that can truly make this offense dynamic? I'm sure, but I'm also sure he has jet sweeps in his playbook, middle screens, etc. The problem isn't the plays in the playbook...the problem is situational playcalling - knowing what to call and when. That will plague us as long as Richt is calling them.

You want to know something? This offense is actually after they have consulted others on certain things concerning the spread type offenses and rpo type things. Richt has talked about that on hurricane hotline in last couple years even going back to when they had Kaaya. How a "old dog can learn new tricks" and such. At end of day, that old dog will lean on those old habits.

Another thing that makes it highly unlikely is current setup of the whole offensive staff. We have 3 Co-OC (Brown, Dugans and Richt), plus a qb corch (richt jr). If you were to bring in a OC (who is usually but not always also QB coach) you would be demoting a ton on that side of ball including yourself (who pride is completely tied to proving your former employers wrong that you cant call plays). We would see a seismic shift on that staff. I dont think Richt has that kind of track record with his corches. He would rather hold on to them a year too long than other way around, and his son being qb corch when he wasnt really qualified is all type of ethical/nepotism issues (why UGA had nepotism rules against this type of stuff).

In other words, we are screwed

We are screwed. The offense under Richt is the equivalent of the defense under Golden. Golden refused to change the defense and Richt is not going to change his offense or let someone else call plays.

Indeed, friend.

I had a sinking feeling listening to Coach Richt this morning. It reminded me so much of Coach Golden.

We are in deep trouble.

Richt was pretty clear on WQAM this morning that nothing will change in terms of playcalling.
Dang it 1mg don’t do that to me! The only thing keeping me hanging on is CMR has a come to Jesus moment during this bye and looks in the mirror and makes the necessary changes.
