Butch Davis is as good as it gets when comes to recruiting and identifying talent. But as other posters have said, people forget that he was never considered a good game day coach.

His record vs. ACC opponents at UNC 2007 - 2010:

Miami: 3-1
Duke: 4-0
BC: 2-0
Clemson: 1-0
FSU: 1-1
MD: 1-1
GT: 1-3
VT: 1-3
UVA: 1-3
NC St: 0-4
Wake: 0-1
Pitt: 0-1 (in the BE at the time)

That's not very good.

I think Butch is an emotional hire, because of the the talent he put together 98-2002, and he always beat Miami when he was at UNC. I get the nostalgia. But you could definitely argue the 98 & 99 Miami teams underachieved. And if you look at the whole body of work, you'd say his UNC teams underachieved.

Butch seems like the type that will recruit well, and we'd be "better" if we hire him, but we won't be "Miami". I see him getting us to 8-10 wins a year and be top 25, but not 11-12 wins and be top 10.

North Carolina is not remotely a football power. That school is ALL basketball. The team he took over had only one winning season in the last 6 years. The team he had a combined winning pct of 38% over the last six years before he got there. As soon as he took them over, the culture there changed immediately. I don't think you or anyone else truly realize how bad UNC football was before he got there. lol...

I'll just tell you this, sometimes individuals will use basic internet knowledge to base their facts. Once you peel back the layers, you will see what a fantastic job Butch did at UNC. Once the ball was starting to roll, the scandal broke out and he was let go....and for the record, UNC has been dirty for a while and Butch had nothing to do w/ that.

You can use stats and dates to argue whatever point you want to make. Like this....

Yes, UNC was bad for 6 years before Butch. But the 10 years before that UNC had 9 winning seasons, went 5-2 in Bowl games, had 3 10+ win seasons, finished ranked in the Top 10 twice, and won 66% of their games. UNC won 55% of their games under Butch. UNC has won 59% of their games since Butch left.

See?

And yes, UNC is a basketball first school. So are all these ACC shools - Duke, MD, UVA, NC St., and Wake. He went 7-12 against those schools. And UNC has a better football history than any of them.

I think Butch did a "fantastic" job recruiting at UNC, but not a "fantastic" job coaching.

I think UNC going 8-5 in 2010 with that many players missing and managing the season the way they did is actually more impressive than if they had gone 10-2 and played for the ACC title (like I thought they would preseason) and greater evidence of how great of a coach Butch Davis is. Had all of those guys stayed out of trouble and they had the season they were capable of prior to the suspensions there would still be Cane fans opposed to Butch Davis becoming our coach next season. Instead of "He never won more than 8 games at North Carolina" there would be more people saying "He's just a great recruiter, anyone could win 10 games and the Coastal at UNC with those players".

Let's face it, some people just don't want the guy to coach here again.

When he went to UNC, they won three games the year before. Not a recruiting hotbed, nor a team that recruits wanted to even talk to.

Butch worked it the best he could, and his last year, several of his starters were yanked - kinda hard to win ten after that fiasco - but he still won eight. Just imagine if he'd had his starters.

He build them up. The fourth year was going to be his explosion into double-digit wins after stacking their roster up. It was derailed by losing their top 3 players - Marvin Austin, Robert Quinn, and Greg Little for the season - as well as 12 for the opener, and countless other starters missing games during the seasons.

Interestingly, over the last 16 seasons, UNC has only won 8+ or more games only five times. Three of those came under Butch.

And I have no problem conceding his record at UNC could have been better. And yes, I do think but for the suspensions, UNC would have had a monster year his last year but his record is what it is there.

Butch is still the best choice for Miami.

My question for Butch detractors: do you believe Butch would not have won the championship in 2001 had he stayed? And that it required Coker to win it?

Personally, I think Butch is dying to get back to Miami because he knows he walked away from a dynasty.
