Why Malachi Toney could be faster No second gear)

Love Malachi's game and attitude, but OP is right on this one. Hester doesn't get caught on that return.
Agreed but Hester is an anomaly, and keep in mind that Hester was a year removed from high school when he was a freshman at UM. he had to sit out a full year because NCSU (or maybe FSU) raised issues with his test scores.
So Hester was likely 19 when he stepped on the field against UF.

Mali is a few months from turning 18. I will bet by this time nest year Mali isn’t caught on that same play. Not saying he will ever be as fast as Hester, but he is going to get faster.

Good post, too high level for most guys on here and think you dissing him instead of how he can get better.. This is basically track talk and thats hated on this board.. lol..

Whats crazy is his pops was a burner, a good track season would get him right
Thank you for responding with this bro....you are right on point. Some of these other corny goofballs think everything is a slight at a player. That's the 3rd punt return that Toney could have taken back for a TD that he was caught from behind on. If an once he works on that....then that's a special player becomes generational.

Actually it was a smart play. If he had tried to cut it up field, there were two free UM defenders and he didn’t have a time out. With 30 or so seconds, if you get tackled in bounds the clock would bleed to at least 10 to 15 seconds.
Why didn’t he just run past everyone to the corner like Mali did on the TD. Concepcion is a 10.6 track guy.

What I find hilarious is that he is actually fighting himself when he runs…LOL

The thing I’ve noticed is his running stride once he breaks into the open field. When he hits daylight, it doesn’t look like he has a true second gear. His stride mechanics are what’s slowing him down.

Keeping it simple. He has to much ground contact. Ideally you want to decrease your ground contact and increase your stride length.

To me it’s like he is shuffling his feet..lol. It’s weird because once he his (second gear) his stride decreases which slows him down
He is a Freshman. Those mechanics will be improved off season.

Back in the day a lot of our guys would also run track (Santana, Andre, etc) and that would help with their top end speed.

Word is Mario has him signed up for off-season dance class, hoping to get him lighter on his feet & stop dragging them. Needs to do away with the Mali Shuffle.
