if you see a kid like cager or marcus lewis commit to um, I think the locality has alot to do with it. My buddy coaches in PA and alot of his kids went to west coast. Kids from northeast dont really view florida as the south especially south florida. many kids have family. its really tough for a kid from jersey, new york, philly, balitmore to adjust to southern red states. that is why they seem to avoid that part of the country. I am not claiming anything i just see kids from northeast look at schools like miami, ohio state, michigan but no matter how good, they seem reluctant to go to an alabama, Auburn , etc.

miami is like maldives to folks that live in the miserable north east. the sunshine and palm trees casts a spell on those boys.

In addition to what OP stated, IMO the reason you're seeing these morons have some success with the OOS kids is that they aren't as aware of the program's current toxicity as the local kids, who see and hear about it every day.

Cager and Lewis aren't from the Northeast, but your point is dead on. Kids from DC to NYC find Miami like home. Frankly that applies to the entire UM student body.

No handlers, less corruption in the high school football, biggest problem PARENTS

You answered your own question. UM traditionally has a large segment of the student body originate from the Northeast & Mid Atlantic regions. These kids are used to metropolitan living where as when you go to rural campus, culturally it is whole different animal . Also the quality of education plays a major role also for the families that have an understanding of ranking system. Also UM football is still a strong brand in the north.

Go Canes

Number 1 reason - The weather
Number 2 reason - Program history and the swag image that The U has in the Northeast

Then there is also the obvious Florida (the state) overall is just more esthetically pleasing because of its cleaner/newer infrasture with little things like smooth roads without of surrounding green space even in urban area's. Then there is the snow and cold

Consider this kids seeing this in Janaury & February vs a foot of dirty brown snow an sleat.

Then you live with this

Or living like this, then think about miami

So leave your home in the northeast or mid atlantic region an its 20 degrees an miserable then you land in miami 3 hours later an it is 80 degrees an you are wisked off to a place like this.

Then compare to a visit to Ohio St and the rest of the midwest that looks nice until early October, then is covered by a foot of snow until late april.
