Why is Jeff Thomas still returning kickoffs?

Cam Harris, but people could make the argument he is also too valuable. KJ obviously needs to be one of the returners. Mark Pope would be worth trying out on returns.

I agree with OP, JT has not been particularly good as a return man. He's a little better on punt return than kick return, but his decision making in fielding punts is problematic as well.

What about Robert Burns on kick return? He's supposed to be fast and athletic, and we hardly use him, so what are we saving him for? ****, I'd give Jimmy Murphy a whirl back there. All I want is a guy who can get me better starting position than the 25, at minimum, and not fumble the ball. JT4 is not accomplishing the goal.

How often do we start out with the ball inside the 25 following a kickoff? The answer is too often.

If we're going to send someone head-first into a pile of humanity, it might as well be a thick RB who will break a tackle and fall forward.
 
They are trying to make sure Jeff Thomas is happy by giving him touches which I’m not mad at but punt returning is his strength not kick returning. I’d rather have Mark Pope or Mike Harley on kick offs.
 
Why not let lingard return kicks
That’s what I want to know
What they got to lose cuz obviously they ain’t gonna give him carries

With the plethora of players not playing, I would love to see someone other than JT return kickoffs. Lingard will be in the portal soon enough, #watchthecomeback!

I have thought the same. He may still break one but I think he is a better punt returner than kick returner. Maybe Pope can get a look. Let Thomas focus on WR and punt returner. Having said that Thomas is still one of our best options. A healthy Lingard would be ideal back there. Our blocking on special teams is another story. Being below the scholly limit is like a self imposed sanction. Special teams is the first casualty when you lack depth.
 
Thomas either hasn’t been taught properly or he just doesn’t get it. Why does he always fair catch punts inside the 10 yard line ? Give Jimmy Murphy a shot. He’s dangerous.
 
Thomas makes me nervous on almost every kick return. Couple this with almost zero expectation that he's ever gonna break one for big yardage let alone a TD and I have no problem trying someone else doing it. Pope, Lingard, Spicer, Patchan, Brooke Wilson, whoever.

Was hoping for Lingard. He has the speed if theres a hole. Maybe next year if he doesnt get lost in the portal
 
I’ve been wanting to see Frierson get a shot back there. It doesn’t take the fastest guy on the field to be successful, it takes vision. Frierson was a great return man in high school, he has that vision.

Also why not KJ? He’s done it at this level and was pretty good at it.
