I used to follow recruting, tried to go to high school games to see our future perform. I hated losing prime recruits but loved when a supposed unheralded player turned out great. I usually knew a little about every player before we started the season. I knew some Broward County high school coaches and VHS taped games at Deerfield. Got some good info from those coaches, Met Rod Carter while at Fort Lauderdale High. Off season now is a joke..following recruiting is not satisfying. We've got some highly rated players who get passed over via the NIL players. Our QB room currently is stacked yet I doubt any will ever get to develop. I really loved Chaney, wanted to see him progress and I know...injuries but still hated to see him go to Louisville. Having Cam for one year makes it hard to think of him as a true Hurricane and I really wanted to see Emory develop and the interviews before he arrived at the U of Anderson showed he was a true Cane, recruiting for us so now they sit another year and probably won't even get into mop up situations. Just sit on the bench and now with Nickel there too or they will NIL out. Without the knoledge from following the path of our dedicated recruits who have been life long fans..I could care less if Carson Beck is our QB as he isn't a Cane. He says the right stuff but the path to the U sucks. Its hard to explain the emotions of how the NIL has shaped our team, can't see one year players having the loyalty and dedication to the U explayers like Irvin have.
Without NIL our QB situation would’ve sucked last season though, players always got payed under the table cfb is just more open world now, I just don’t like what they did to the conferences, the conferences should’ve stayed the same imo

I understand but it doesn't bother me at all

. I have no idea why I care so much about college football and Miami, but I want to see the uniforms win - doesn't matter who is wearing them.

I like to see freshmen make plays, kids who have put in the effort for years succeed, all that... but I'll take a team of mercenaries every year if that means Miami beats the **** out of FSU, UF, ND, or any other "big" program.
This im not sure why I care about The University of Miami so much, but I do, and I want to see the orange and green U running through people

It already was. Now it more publicicly acknowledged.

It's been over 15 years of Russell Wilson giving 3 years at NC State and dumping them for 1 year at Wisconsin among the avalanche of Jacoby Brissett's, Baker Mayfield's, and the like after them. And we've also seen the "bowl season" become a total farce aside from the playoff bowls over the past 10 years, starting with Christian McCaffrey skipping a bowl game to now where your team will **** near have 10-15% of the team sitting out.

Rumors are Iamaleava threatened to sit out the Tennessee playoff game as a negotiating move to get a better NIL deal last December (he ended up transferring to UCLA instead after the season). So, even the college playoff games may not be immune from guys sitting out in the near future.

For a long time, CFB was a unique landscape. Most radical fans can know about their players in 10th-11th grade (often younger). Even the players missed on, it’s cool to follow how their careers turn out, for better or worse. It was an extremely behind the scenes fan experience. In hindsight, it was kind of creepy lol. Regardless, those days are long gone. Good ride.

The evolution of college football in the last decade has been disappointing.

For me it has been the double-whammy of NIL combined with the Portal. My feeling is that the sport could have managed either one pretty well without a huge impact to the fan experience.

Paying players would have been much more natural if they were committed to the teams they signed with. Or Portal players leaving could have been understood as a personal choice rather than a market driven one.

Combining those two policies has created the free-agency like atmosphere that feels like mercenary pay-for-play.

**** even a juggernaut like the NFL would suffer if free-agent signings could be ripped up every three months. Team continuity and fan connection would be awful.

Frankly, we have largely got the best of the deal. We have brought in better talent while minimizing defections. Imagine being a poor mid-tier team without any hope to retain the talent that you develop. Washington State fans have to be livid about losing guys like Cam and Mateer year after year.

Big picture, I am an advocate for the players and I think both policies are the right thing to do. That is why I support them even though it diminishes how I feel about the sport. I just think it would have been an easier adjustment if they had come along during a staggered time frame rather than all at one time.

I'm good with NIL but the portal needs to be blown up.

You're asking working class people to donate money to the school so entitled athletes can put it in their pocket and then ask for more a year later - and if they don't get it, they bounce.

The portal is the main problem here.

That's why it's such a **** show.

And how is it any different from HS football in Florida where kids jump to different schools every year
It isn't. It's just taken football much longer to catch up to basketball. Basketball players always transferred more in college and high school, probably bc of horse crap AAU

Part of the issue is pay for play was never supposed to be allowed. Collectives were never supposed to be allowed. Unfortunately the NCAA has been cucked and are perfectly fine being as useless as ever.

Yeah I'm on the "It's not NIL, It's the portal train"

With the amount of money now LEGALLY flowing to players, there needs to be a meaningful change to player movement.

But we likely won't get there without collective bargaining

For me at least, I don’t have a problem with NIL, the players should be allowed to make money. I think it’s crazy that Terrelle Pryor got suspended for selling his own stuff (BTW, F OSU) when the school would eventually do it and make money off of it. The NCAA made Billions over the years off the backs of the kids. However, had they actually policed SEC schools with the illegal “Bag” payments before NIL maybe I would have a different opinion. Look how fast Nick Saban retired when he no longer had that competitive advantage. This way I think it at least gives the Canes a chance to be involved in every battle. Transfer portal is a different issue, I have mixed feelings about this one. Some schools use to treat players as 1 year renewable scholarships, so essentially they could be cut after a year. Plus you add in the fact that coaches can change as often as they want is also another thing that comes into play. One change I would be for is having only transfer window, possibly right after the season and that’s it. This era doesn’t bother me as much.
