Why has our QB play been so bad?

Due to a myriad of reasons and not necessarily linked to one singular thing

We don’t an NFL star. We need a college star. We just need a quality QB. The position has been killing us.
 
We’ve had some talent at QB, we just didn’t use it right.

Two biggest issues were insistence on pro style bro offense and no recruiting enough QBs to compete with each other. For decades, we’ve avoided competition at the QB spot so we get stuck with our unchallenged starter and some jag as a backup. Even going back to Dorsey. What other quarterbacks did we have on campus? Did anybody think Derrick Crudup or Ethnic Sands was ever going to be a starter outside of emergency? We’ve had two actual QB competitions in 20 years. Marve/Harris and last year. Every other quarterback just inherited the job.
 
They had a variety of issues. The only constant was bad coaching.

Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman were bad players.

Robert Marve and Kevin Olsen were mediocre talents with bad character.

Malik Rosier was a mediocre talent with average work habits.

Jarren Williams was a good talent with bad character.

Kosi Perry was a solid but limited talent with maturity issues.

Stephen Morris and Jacory Harris were above-average players that let early success get to them.

Brad Kaaya was a good player and a good worker limited only by his athleticism and defense.

Generally agree.

Rosier's work habits were below what is needed to be a major college QB. Whether they're average or not, they're below the bar for the position. Perry IMO is a very good talent physically, but has serious character issues (maturity, work ethic) and perhaps football IQ issues also. Morris IMO was a better talent than Jacory, but Jacory had moxie. They both were stuck in mediocre cultures and offenses. But neither was a great talent and I doubt either would have been a front-line player at a top program. Kaaya did more than UM fans give him credit for. He was limited physically (mobility), but otherwise could see and throw and respond to coaching. He wasn't great at broken plays or chaos or threading the needle and didn't have 'it' in may ways, but he owns our record book and did his job pretty well under tough circumstances given those Ds.

Old antiquated offensive systems has had our QB play subpar for a long time & overall bad Evals on the recruiting trail has yielded ****** results.

We've never had a 4,000 yard passer in a season & never had a guy throw for 30TD's or more in a season.

At other programs that's pretty routine, at Miami that would be a historic season.

Which is exactly why I think King slaughters our record book this year. Our QBs have historically put up very mediocre numbers, because of the systems.

As for why our QBs have stunk, it is bad evaluations, first and foremost. After that, it's systems that can't get the most out of the talent they do have. Then there's the culture of mediocrity that we just can't shake, because we hire coaches that are either past it, or just never had it to begin with. Lashlee is the first OC, or ANY coach, that I feel is a total pro, and near the top of his field that we have hired in many years. Here's hoping Manny leaves him the **** alone and lets him do whatever the living **** he wants.

I don't care if they are the biggest bust in NFL history, if they ball here and win games that's what matters.

So what's your metric for a "good" QB then? If it is NFL ability, then as I pointed out, Miami has had more success than OSU (in terms of a QBs duration).

Since it seems you are looking at college QB numbers, I assume what matters more than passing yards is TDs responsible for (if a QB scores points- who cares if by throwing or running).

2017- Rosier ranked 22nd (more than Darnold, Falk, Rosen and a lot of other "good QB).
2016- Kaaya 35th (more than Drew Lock, Chad Kelly, Daniel Jones)
2009- Harris 31st (more than Nick Foles or Kirk Cousins)

I think if you have a QB in the top 35 in total TDs (amongst all players in CFB), that generally qualifies as a good college QB. Going back to 2006, Miami had 3 different QBs who landed in the top 35 (I think we've had 7 QBs in that time- so a little under half the QBs Miamis had could be considered good college QBs). Now that doesn't mean they ranked that high their entire career, but the fact that they managed it at least once means they at least flashed the potential to be good college QBs. Those numbers were all in pro-style offenses. Imagine if Miami had been running a spread offense all those years. How much better would those numbers have been?
 
Look at QB rankings start at 2011 and tell me if u heard of many of those names in top 50. Very hard to predict success that why most team recruit at least one a year.

It's just crazy to think Kaaya was our best QB the last 15 years. I mean compared to most power 5 schools Kaaya is just an average starter.
