Why do people think Al is a good recruiter?

Al has basically recruited like Shannon did before Shannon quit recruiting. He's not bad, but after this first year (where every new coach has a great recruiting class) he just had way too many misses.

2013:
Completely ****ed up DT recruiting
missed on Alex Collins
missed on Matthew Thomas
missed on Denver Kirkland

Then in 2014, he got his *** kicked in South Florida:
Travis Rudolph
Ermon Lane
Dalvin Cook
Sony Michel
Travonte Valentine
Johnny Dixon

So while we've still pulled in better players than 85% of the schools in the country, Golden has just missed on too many big time prospects. It would obviously be unfair to expect him to get all, but our RB core would be vastly improved with one of Alex Collins or Dalvin Cook--in fact, somebody who is better than Yearby could have won us the FSU game.

The ncaa thing hurt with recruiting. so did the fact we brought in a staff from temple no one knew about. i dont think player development for 2012 kids who stayed and never redshirted nor had any upperclassmen has been horrible.

Butch was able to recruit a stable of NFL players, why can't Al?
Because Butch was NFL caliber except for gameday coaching and strategy, and Al is a mid-tier college coach.

mid-tier may be giving him more credit than he has earned honestly. Temple really isn't a mid-tier organization on the field.

Miami **** near recruits itself.

Get off the drugs man...

Looking at his blue chip recruits (4/5 star), how many have lived up to status out of HS?

2011
Chickillo - disappointment
Grimble- had to transfer

2012
Bush - has lived up when healthy
Flowers - lived up
Hamilton - now redshirting, complete disappointment
Howard - has not lived up
Duke - has been great against lesser programs, but average against better.
Kirby - has not lived up
Lewis - same
McCord - same

2013
Burns - jury still out, but should have shown more by now
Carter - disappointment
Coley - regressed... toughness questioned
Elder - not lived up
Grace - potential there, but small
Muhammad - early to tell, but didn't flash much as FR
Olsen - off team
Sandland - transferred

2014
too early to tell, but Kaaya and Yearby seem to be the only ones that will live up to or exceed expectations

Overall, he has not hit on enough top recruits to be considered a good recruiter.

Ok You sound like a complete idiot. That has nothing to do with recruiting but more with development. 2nd don't disrespect Duke. 3rd you cant make assessments on players who have only played 1 year of meaningful snaps (Carter,Muhammad,Elder). Try again next time.

There's a difference between recruiting and developing.

Golden has recruited well, although he's missed on some big fish. Development in certain spots has been an issue.

BTW I disagree with a lot of the names on that list. For example Corn Elder has played well.

It your recruiting guys that won't or can't be developed then that's A recruitng issue.

I disagree with your assessment of about half those players. Chick is hardly a disappointment, Duke balled against FSU last year before he broke his ankle and he balled again this year. Kirby has been solid and so has McCord. Burns has balled out over the last 5 or 6 weeks and is still raw and learning, if al keeps up this psudo-aggressive defense then I expect Burns to continue to get better. Elder is by far the best tackler we have in the secondary and like Burns is still very young. Don't care how big Grace is, guy flies around and makes plays, thought he played great against FSU. Muhammad flashed elite pass rushing skills and is a monster physically, don't know what you're talking about there.

I think you're nitpicking with a lot of these guys. Al isn't as good a recruiter some people make him out to be and he isn't as bad. We have some solid pieces, pieces that could win 10 games if the staff wasn't a bunch of morons. We've missed on the big ones though, and until we start to get the Dalvin Cooks, the Sony Michels, or the Ermon Lanes of the world we won't take that next step.

Time will show... these players can't touch Davis and JJ recruits, development or not. Nobody's disrespecting Duke... he's just not a big time player.

What? This post is silly

Golden's supporters twist themselves in knots trying to defend the untenable.

"He's a great recruiter!"
"Based on what?"
*points to 4/5 star signees and high class rankings*
"Then why can't he beat teams with recruiting classes consistently ****tier than UM's?"
"STARS DON'T MATTER. RECRUITING GURUS DON'T KNOW ****. HOW MANY FIVE STARS WERE DRAFTED!?"

And it's hard to win enough games to impress players like Cook, Michel, and Lane, if you don't sign players like Cook, Michel, and Lane. It's a vicious cycle.

There is no connection between quality of recruiting and depth.
