Why did Malik Rosier play decline so much last year?

What happened is a combination of being limited in ability, god awful Coaching at QB/OC & extremely predictable play calling. Rosier was a low rated Al Folden recruit coming out of HS, that had mechanical issues in his throwing motion that didn't actually watch film or study until 2017 by his own admission. He actually overachieved a lot more than anyone would have ever expected.

But a lot of people always remove all context when discussing the 2017 season & just look at the numbers on its face, but that's part of the problem as to why people were so shocked he fell off a cliff in 18. If you closely examine the 17 season & rewatch the games, you'll see he was a lot closer to be as bad as he was in 18 in the 17 season than you might think, despite the overal Win/Loss record.

In 2017, his best games were Toldeo, GTech & Cuse, the rest of the games he was serviceable enough for us to win combined with having great support in big playmakers around him & an unappreciated Defense.

He only had 3 games with more than 20 completions, was a 54% passer on the season & threw INT's in 8 out of 13 games, people just overlooked that fact because we won multiple games regardless of how bad he looked sometimes because he wasn't asked to carry the team.

Against FSU, all anyone remembers is the throw to Langham, but he finished that game 19/44 254yds 3TD's 1INT at 43.2%cmp, which objectively is below average but because of the way in which we won vs a hated rival people don't care. That's kinda the point, as long as we won his play didn't really matter to most lol.

Vs UNC was another perfect example of this, he completed 42% of his passes & was terrible, but had a bunch of big plays from Berrios, JT4, Homer, Deejay & Herndon, so everyone just blamed the poor performance of the game on the Defense. Despite the fact the Defense forced 3INT's & a Fumble while also literally knocking out 3 QB's in the game but the Offense was just so bad for most of the game UNC was able to hang around until late.

Even when we dominated Va Tech, he was 11/22 202yds 2TD's passing 1TD rushing with 3INT's at 50%cmp. Again, looking at it objectively those are not good numbers for a P5 QB, but our Defense was just so on fire for that game, his reckless turnovers didn't affect us negatively because we were just completely dialed in & winning that game regardless.

His best game where he looked like a **** good QB was vs Cuse, that's one of the only times where his play exceeded the level of talent around him, that game he was one of the best players on the field.

But what happened to Rosier is Defenses caught up to how simplistic our offensive game plan was & saw on film all Rosier's flaws & forced him to make throws he simply couldn't make. Once Defenses realized how easy it was to figure out our sequences & that the QB was only going to certain parts of the field, he experienced something called regression to the mean.

Richt did an awful job in preparing this team for the 18 season & Rosier got caught being forced to play above his ability, something he couldn't duplicate again.
Honestly this

Film...
Malik didn't finish the 2017 season with a bang. As the season progressed his numbers reflected a decline in production.

Defenses had seen enough of Richt's offense and Malik's skill set to put the onus of him to win games.

Combination of Richt never being fully able to adjust / scheme up counters and Malik's lack of skillset.

^^^^

His play regressed because his coaches lacked fire and confidence which directly affected his play. Plus he was hurt a lot and the OL didn't do him any favors. Add all that with the fact that Richt was playing musical chairs with his QBs so they were always looking over their shoulders as to when they would get yanked out the game.

I get what you are saying here, but don't sell Enos short, my friend. Technically, we won most of our games last year, with the Richt's calling the shots on offense. Lol.

Maybe better to say, "...if Dan Penos' offense is in the 40th percentile-ish of most good O categories, Miami wins most of those 6 loss contests from last year..."

Miami showing that kind of O improvement will have a positive knock on effect to the D.

I can buy that...

In 2017 Rosier put up 3600 Total yards with 31TDs and 14 INTs

In 2018 He put up 1300 Total yards with 12 Total TDs and 8INTs but he only threw for 6TDs.

Why do you think his play took such a huge drop off?

Mark Richt retired because he knew he sucked that bad.

His son does not have a job.

Can't believe you put this kind of effort into this topic, but kudos for doing so, and spot on a usual.

To to the original post, what happened with Malik, wasn't anything that we weren't observing all along, or anything different than happened with the rest of the program.

This last point is particularly important and one area where I believe Manny will be a lot better than his predecessor.

The 2017 offseason was the deciding moment that ended Richts tenure here. As you pointed out, all of the data was there to show that replicating the same success had the odds stacked against it in back-to-back seasons.

I'll throw in an ungodly amount of turnovers that helped as well. This gives me hope for Manny, because despite that successful metric he still implemented significant changes to his defense.

But, back to Richt... Heading into 2018 season all of the data was there to suggest we aggressively pursue better quarterback development, a more innovative offensive philosophy and a head coach who focused all of his attention on the broader program and less on just one side of the ball.

He did none of these things, entering the season with a extremely limited quarterback and a offensive game plan that was a carbon copy of the one we ran unsuccessfully against Clemson. These were the results the data, in hindsight, was pointing at with a spotlight.

Coaches figured out that if you could stop his tuck and run, all he could do was throw 5 yards off the receiver in any direction..
.... add Richt's 30 year playbook and his goose was cooked.

Oline play. Losing Herndon, losing 82, and the coaches playing QB musical chairs after the Toledo .. but idc what anyone says we played so off schedule on offense last year due to oline play

Agreed. The drop off in offensive playmakers was insane. Herndon and 82 were also out for the last few games in 2017 when our offense was stagnant.

Richt was the OC both years, the difference is the offensive playmakers. You can mask inept play calling by throwing out an nfl offense against an acc coastal defense.

Any QB that doesn't throw well will eventually get shutdown in ANY conference.

Without a legitimate passing threat that QB and offense becomes a sitting duck.

Even with a good OL its difficult ...and to this day...we're still working towards having a good OL

He lost his confidence. I think the fact he started messing up and knowing the fans wanted another QB to play started to get in his head. You can tell he was second guessing himself and wasn’t the leader he was in the 2017. As well as the multiple players who bailed him out in 2017 were not there in 2018.

This . it's a difference when you know you're the man and playing with confidence opposed to you thinking and looking over your shoulder after every play

He should've done all of this before His 1st season at UM, nepotism & cronyism blinds.

Uh fell off? He was **** in 2017 just like he was in 2018. I was saying he was going to suck all summer - and yet Jarren never got any PT... The difference is being horrible and being ******* horrible. Either way both seasons were horrible.

The actual difference in stats is because when we played the super **** teams in 2017 he actually did solid and padded his bad stats....I'd attribute it to having Berrios and Richards.

Film exposed him. He was inaccurate as **** and didn’t go through progressions. Richt sucked as a playcaller but he campflouged him as long as he could.

Last few games of his Jr year is when it all came crashing down.
