Why did Malik Rosier play decline so much last year?

What happened is a combination of being limited in ability, god awful Coaching at QB/OC & extremely predictable play calling. Rosier was a low rated Al Folden recruit coming out of HS, that had mechanical issues in his throwing motion that didn't actually watch film or study until 2017 by his own admission. He actually overachieved a lot more than anyone would have ever expected.

But a lot of people always remove all context when discussing the 2017 season & just look at the numbers on its face, but that's part of the problem as to why people were so shocked he fell off a cliff in 18. If you closely examine the 17 season & rewatch the games, you'll see he was a lot closer to be as bad as he was in 18 in the 17 season than you might think, despite the overal Win/Loss record.

In 2017, his best games were Toldeo, GTech & Cuse, the rest of the games he was serviceable enough for us to win combined with having great support in big playmakers around him & an unappreciated Defense.

He only had 3 games with more than 20 completions, was a 54% passer on the season & threw INT's in 8 out of 13 games, people just overlooked that fact because we won multiple games regardless of how bad he looked sometimes because he wasn't asked to carry the team.

Against FSU, all anyone remembers is the throw to Langham, but he finished that game 19/44 254yds 3TD's 1INT at 43.2%cmp, which objectively is below average but because of the way in which we won vs a hated rival people don't care. That's kinda the point, as long as we won his play didn't really matter to most lol.

Vs UNC was another perfect example of this, he completed 42% of his passes & was terrible, but had a bunch of big plays from Berrios, JT4, Homer, Deejay & Herndon, so everyone just blamed the poor performance of the game on the Defense. Despite the fact the Defense forced 3INT's & a Fumble while also literally knocking out 3 QB's in the game but the Offense was just so bad for most of the game UNC was able to hang around until late.

Even when we dominated Va Tech, he was 11/22 202yds 2TD's passing 1TD rushing with 3INT's at 50%cmp. Again, looking at it objectively those are not good numbers for a P5 QB, but our Defense was just so on fire for that game, his reckless turnovers didn't affect us negatively because we were just completely dialed in & winning that game regardless.

His best game where he looked like a **** good QB was vs Cuse, that's one of the only times where his play exceeded the level of talent around him, that game he was one of the best players on the field.

But what happened to Rosier is Defenses caught up to how simplistic our offensive game plan was & saw on film all Rosier's flaws & forced him to make throws he simply couldn't make. Once Defenses realized how easy it was to figure out our sequences & that the QB was only going to certain parts of the field, he experienced something called regression to the mean.

Richt did an awful job in preparing this team for the 18 season & Rosier got caught being forced to play above his ability, something he couldn't duplicate again.

Basically this.

Slightly off topic, UF fans look at last season as that will be the same Miami team they play. Sure, we'll miss our starting secondary, Joe Jax and Willis. But offensively, we'll surely be significantly better, because we really couldn't get any worst.

Other teams adjusted to us and we did not adjust to the adjustments. Once the jacket was off we didn't have anything on underneath to compensate for our middle of the pack acc nudity.

Rosier is still fresh off being hated but I give the dude all the credit in the world. He outperformed everyone including his own expectations and was a big part of a pretty awesome and close to magical year. Rosier will always be a true cane to ol P.

1) Richt's QB development program was awful
2) Rosier is not a QB who has "it"
3) 1+2 = bad, bad, bad outcome

The 10 game win streak, when objectively analyzed, had probably 4 losses at least. Luck was on Miami's side.

Look no further than UVA in HRS where Jaquan had to essentially win the game on D.

He lost his confidence. I think the fact he started messing up and knowing the fans wanted another QB to play started to get in his head. You can tell he was second guessing himself and wasn’t the leader he was in the 2017. As well as the multiple players who bailed him out in 2017 were not there in 2018.

Richt made him go through rigid progression that didn’t match what he say on the field.

How can you build confidence when you get reprimanded for completing passes?

He wasn’t the most accurate passer or a gym rat, but we saw he was better than his abysmal lows.

Richt’s stubbornness and nepotism put the ENTIRE offense in a funk. Developing confidence and mental toughness is just as important as technique and execution.

As much good as Richt did here, his struggle in this area made things unravel fast, and Malik got the brunt of his shortcomings.

He overachieved and it was great. Aside from all the turnovers and the excitement of the TOC, other teams had zero film of a running Miami QB to watch. Rosier hurt them badly in big games doing what Cane QB never really did - run intentionally. He was floating in a bubble and when it burst the magic was gone. Liberty City El have a good detailed explanation; I’m just simple minded about it. He lost his IT. But while it lasted he was the most exciting thing in years and years and I am glad he was here - broke nole win streak, got us to ACC title game, up to number two ranking and chasing a playoff. Had the coaching staff overachieved as much as that young man did, we would have number 6 in the case.

He had richt in 2017 though

Richt got worse as a play caller in 2018.

He seemed “off”.

I thought I was the only one who noticed, but other posters noticed signs that there may have been an undisclosed medical issue in play.

Malik had limitations, no doubt. Too often the offense ran head first into them. There were concepts that were implemented haphazardly and sporadically that could have really helped, but Richt abondoned them and didn’t develop them, sticking to HIS OWN comfort zone.

We have a winner.

All Enos has to do is get us up to the 40's - 30's range on offense & we'll win most of our games this year.
I get what you are saying here, but don't sell Enos short, my friend. Technically, we won most of our games last year, with the Richt's calling the shots on offense. Lol.

Lol not at all...

I meant if Enos can just get our offense down from the 90's/100's ranking up to ranked in the 40's/30's range we'll win 10/11 games on our schedule.

Very good take dude...
ANY qb would have been stifled by Richt's offensive.

I figured you must have been thinking that we would at least get to double digit wins, when you said "most" of our games. I just had to make sure that's what you meant. Lol

We don’t need a world beater at QB, at least not this upcoming season. We need one who can execute Enos’ offense to the letter, be able to take what the defense gives us, and get the ball cleanly into the hands of our playmakers. We do that, which will mean we improve to at minimum @40’s offensively and we will win 10-11 wins. There’s just no team outside of the Gayturd who sparks concerns outcome wise on the schedule. But I’m sure as we work through the kinks on offense early in the year that we will have to rely on our defense to do some heavy lifting. But I don’t see that occurring once the QB and playmakers get in sync with Enos’ play calling. Once that happens we could easily be one of the hottest teams in all of college football.
