If that's the requirement for being a good AD, they need to hire someone from this board.Gino has pulled no punches in his criticism of the program. No reason to think he changes that stance.
Put up or shut up.

The better question is what are the qualifications to be an AD? What does the educational curriculum look like to earn a sports-management degree, and what makes some ADs more successful than others? The rest is lived experience, leadership, communication-skills and vision.I do not assume anything until there is an official announcement from the University. But, let's say it is Gino. His current LinkedIn bio has his current role at GAMCO Investors, Inc. as "Institutional asset management. Public Funds, Taft-Hartley and High Net Worth clientele." How does institutional asset management correlate to running an athletic program? Is there some overlap? How are the tasks and objectives similar?
LinkedIn Bio
yup!If we hire him right now and he fires manny at midnight we will all like him a lot more
Put up what, he has no AD experience, like Manny had no HC experience! We are a joke of a University, we just hire people and we make sure they do not have the qualifications for the job when we hire them, that is are only requirement is that you meet none of the requirements! Why does everyone fall for this every time, here we go again, stepping in the same pile of dog crap we just stepped in 3 years ago with Manny, I can't even believe this is a University in good standing, we are like some joke that we keep showing the world how inept UM is at everything.Gino has pulled no punches in his criticism of the program. No reason to think he changes that stance.

Why do you assume former student-athletes can't have the organizational skills to "lift the department up as a WHOLE" or address issues of competitiveness in other sports... The dumb jock narrative is infecting the minds of a lot of people on this board.I know most on this board only care about football, but baseball and basketball are absolutely down the ****ter too.
Football is the most important but the hire shouldn’t only be about football. We have maybe the most embarrassing P5 basketball program in the country and a baseball program in almost the exact same situation as football.
The fact they’ve basically come out and said the hire is to improve football only is so short-sighted.
Just like good football doesn’t have to be at the expense of the academics, it also doesn’t have to be at the expense of baseball and basketball.
Get a real AD who can lift the department up as a WHOLE.
The time for trying something new or giving things a shot is long past. We have spent 20 years languishing away as mediocre team in a mediocre P5 division for far too long. If the University is committed to fielding a team worthy of the logo then we should hire an AD that has experience and a history of success PERIODMany here complain about Miami not caring about football. It’s obviously valid as many things done over the last 20 years show that.
Well, looks like Miami is going out and getting Gino as AD. Possibly Zo in some capacity and possibly Mario as HC.
If that doesn’t slap you in the face as Miami now starting to care about football, I don’t know what will.
There are valid points for no prior AD experience, Miami only people, etc.
Let’s give it a chance if this is how it’s going to play out. It’s Miami caring about football. Let’s not miss on that.
Fair enough! I certainly respect what you are saying.Because it’s a nepotism hire for a guy that has no experience. It’s A Middling move made by a middling program. If he does in fact get the job, I hope I’m wrong and will gladly eat crow.
All very fair points. The time for trying something new or giving things a shot is long past. We have spent 20 years languishing away as mediocre team in a mediocre P5 division for far too long. If the University is committed to fielding a team worthy of the logo then we should hire an AD that has experience and a history of success PERIOD
Gino would be a nice story but, with the way CFB has been monetized and professionalized in the 21st century the University cannot afford to miss on these hires. The University must hire a top flight AD with legit experience and a no bull**** attitude to combat the cronyism and nepotism that runs rampant on the BOT that invades University admin hierarchy.
Yeah nothing to do with that- you made it about that. They have intentionally stated through media this hire is football focused. Getting a former football player basically confirms that. Why do you assume former student-athletes can't have the organizational skills to "lift the department up as a WHOLE" or address issues of competitiveness in other sports... The dumb jock narrative is infecting the minds of a lot of people on this board.
What does that mean?
And was a better pro. Owns a winery. Knows business! You are making sense. Why don't we hire Drew Bledsoe? He threw for more yards than Gino in 1992.
and what are the qualifications required to "lift the department as a WHOLE", because your statement inherently suggests they can lift football but not the entire athletic department?Yeah nothing to do with that- you made it about that. They have intentionally stated through media this hire is football focused. Getting a former football player basically confirms that.
Torretta is clearly smart based on his business success but is not qualified for this job. That doesn’t mean he is a “dumb jock”, it means he is not qualified.
You’re making this way bigger than it is brother. The school has stated the plan is to make a hire designed around football. I am explaining the SCHOOL’S objective which they have literally stated through credentialed media.and what are the qualifications required to "lift the department as a WHOLE", because your statement inherently suggests they can lift football but not the entire athletic department?
You may not be doing it intentionally, but you're using nebulous terms like "qualified" without identifying what qualifications allow them to execute the job in part, yet somehow prevents them translating those skills and doing the job on a "WHOLE"; if they both have the organizational & leadership skills to run football, why can't they also be administrators for the other college sports?
Why do you even question his intellect???It means that the key to Zo’s success or failure as AD will be his raw intelligence. I believe that aptitude is at least as important as experience. I don’t how HOW smart Zo is. I know he’s smart. But he has to be REALLY smart to successfully make the transition to big time AD… his intelligence has to overcome his inexperience. I have no way of knowing if he is THAT smart.
I hope he is and gets the AD spot. But I have no way of knowing.
Why do you even question his intellect???
He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) with a concentration in Marketing from The []__[], he's
been a V.P. and worked in the NFL front offices for more than 23 years. I don't understand how you could make such a statement.
Gino has a Bachelor's Degree in Business as well but has not been associated with pro sports after playing; yet you don't question his "raw intelligence"?
Furthermore, "REALLY smart" and "raw intelligence" are nebulous and subjective terms individuals might consciously or unconsciously use as proxies for bias beliefs or discriminatory animus.
What are the similarities or dissimilarities of working in an NFL front office, where your primary job is to liaise with athletic departments, and being an athletic director? How inexperienced or uninitiated is he?
If Alonzo has been evaluating the product and seeing the results of collegiate athletic programs and departments across the country for 23 years at the highest level of professional sport, why can't he organize and direct an athletic department that best prepares student-athletes for success in professional sport and life?
