Which coach outside of Butch Davis do you think would have been able to identify, recruit and develop this talent. I have listed the town the went to HS in as well as when they were drafted. I did this because as know Butch and his staff recruited these guys. I did not list backups on the team, just the listed starters for 2001.

Again the question is which coach other there other than Butch would put this together and how close would the others come. For instance we hear Charlie Strong and Mario Cristobal would recruit Miami very well, but what about the others.

I didnt compare them to Butch, just started their perceived strengths.

This point is this is what a National Championship team at Miami looks like, so who can come the closest. One reason I put this together is the perception has always been we need 22 305'ers starting and while most our team should come from the state of Miami, we can't lose sight he still have to recruit nationally.

Agreed, but also I think there needs to be a caveat here. You don't actually need 10 probowlers to win a title. You only need 10 probowlers when Larry Coker, a rookie DC Randy Shannon, and a rookie HC Rob Chudzinski are running your team.

How many probowlers were on 83, 87, 89, 91 squads? Many less. But those teams had mega coaching from some serious serious dudes.

My Opinion

Outside of Butch Davis I think Tom Herman understand and has the ability to recruit the right local guys and sprinkle in guys from other states. Tom spent a lot of time in Texas and Ohio and both of those states have pretty good high school football. I think he would do well at recruiting across the country and locking down the local talent.

This is one issue I see with both Charlie Strong and Mario Cristobal. Strong did recruit south Florida well despite how we think he did it. That being said his recruitment hasn't been good at Texas and I am not sure he can reach all the right kids. I don't think these out of state kids would care enough about Mario for him to real them in. Mario just doesn't have that big of a national reputation.

I think you can take the QB's from those teams and its worth 2 additional 1st rounders. You are right we shouldn't need that to win but we may need to recruit those type of kids from those areas. Getting that lucky for that many 1st rounders is part luck.

Yup. Herman would certainly effectively go OOS for his QB of the future if necessary. Look I have tried not be a fanboy but if Herman is there you HAVE to get him. The guy is a savage. A proven QB developer. A proven offensive mind. A tremendous pedigree working under Urban. He's undefeated as a HC. He's a known elite recruiter. What the fvck else do people want???

Yup hence my "the burning bush" post. You basically summarized it very perfectly with one statement: if you have top 10 draft pick QB play, you don't need to hit on every single other position.

At one point Charlie strong had more 4 stars committed from Florida with the Florida 5 that was supposed to go to Texas than golden had in the entire class... Obviously it fell apart but he did have John Burt, Tim Irvin, Cecil cherry, Devonaire clarington and devante Davis all committed at once. Strong has had tons of players drafted from Louisville he is second in terms of being after Butch in regards to talent evaluation and it's not close with the other candidates...

And let me make it clear I want tom Herman, Butch and if those two don't work out Im all in on Charlie strong...

Butch! That's not an assumption, that's a fact. ***** what these So Fla coaches are saying, the real elite kids are extremely intrigued by Butch. No Cristobal, No Saban, No Strong, No Herman, No body is featured on ESPN's 30/30 for navigating through horrendous conditions, then chitting on the NCAA afterwards by assembling the best team known to college football. Every FLORIDA kid seen that and got them pumped for Butch. Now that he's a real possibility, kids we normally are missing out on, will have their ears opened.

That is just it. Strong had these players committed from FL but couldn't pull the local talent in TX. How can we expect him to put together a team like the one above if he can all pull blue chips out of one area.

See the thing what people forget is that everybody doesn't have to come from south Florida. You have to get the elite talent... Calvin, Amri, Teddy, Duke, Eddie Jackson, Dalvin.

Two or three of those guys change games and cause momentum shifts in games.

But here is the funny part imagine filling the roster with those 3 star players that explode and have a coach the can bring it out of them. That's where Miami separated itself because not only could the starters play but the backups were good.

11 of the starters were not from the state of Florida.

Dude had the most draft picks at UNC. Say what you want about him as a coach, xs and os guy, or his age or any of that. However, the man is the most insane talent evaluator developer in College history. Hands down.

We have no shot at any of those coaches. Don't have the cash or atmosphere for Herman. UM admin doesn't like Butch bc of UNC crap. Strong will have another year at TX

I get it, Butch is my number one choice. The point of the thread was to discuss who else could come close to this.

I think context makes it more amazing.

The only ones who were highly rated were:

Offense: Johnson, Jones, Bibla and Davenport.
Defense: Joseph, Williams (although he had to go to JC first), DJ, Rumph

I think that's all of them....

Gonzalez was a walk on, Shockey and McKinnie were little known at JCs and McDougle was with Williams at Hinds JC....

Which coach outside of Butch Davis do you think would have been able to identify, recruit and develop this talent. I have listed the town the went to HS in as well as when they were drafted. Who comes the closest though. Who can recruit all of these areas. I know they won't all end up in the 1st round like that team.
