Which coach creates this team? (2001 Hurricanes)

I think context makes it more amazing.

The only ones who were highly rated were:

Offense: Johnson, Jones, Bibla and Davenport.
Defense: Joseph, Williams (although he had to go to JC first), DJ, Rumph

I think that's all of them....

Gonzalez was a walk on, Shockey and McKinnie were little known at JCs and McDougle was with Williams at Hinds JC....

Which coach outside of Butch Davis do you think would have been able to identify, recruit and develop this talent. I have listed the town the went to HS in as well as when they were drafted. I did this because as know Butch and his staff recruited these guys. I did not list backups on the team, just the listed starters for 2001.

Again the question is which coach other there other than Butch would put this together and how close would the others come. For instance we hear Charlie Strong and Mario Cristobal would recruit Miami very well, but what about the others.

My Opinion

Outside of Butch Davis I think Tom Herman understand and has the ability to recruit the right local guys and sprinkle in guys from other states. Tom spent a lot of time in Texas and Ohio and both of those states have pretty good high school football. I think he would do well at recruiting across the country and locking down the local talent.

This is one issue I see with both Charlie Strong and Mario Cristobal. Strong did recruit south Florida well despite how we think he did it. That being said his recruitment hasn't been good at Texas and I am not sure he can reach all the right kids. I don't think these out of state kids would care enough about Mario for him to real them in. Mario just doesn't have that big of a national reputation.

At one point Charlie strong had more 4 stars committed from Florida with the Florida 5 that was supposed to go to Texas than golden had in the entire class... Obviously it fell apart but he did have John Burt, Tim Irvin, Cecil cherry, Devonaire clarington and devante Davis all committed at once. Strong has had tons of players drafted from Louisville he is second in terms of being after Butch in regards to talent evaluation and it's not close with the other candidates...

And let me make it clear I want tom Herman, Butch and if those two don't work out Im all in on Charlie strong...

That is just it. Strong had these players committed from FL but couldn't pull the local talent in TX. How can we expect him to put together a team like the one above if he can all pull blue chips out of one area.

So the case you are making is that he can't recruit out of the state of Florida? All I have to say about that is that he would have 80% of class from Florida if he was here and the pick from ga, ca, nj , la and other states for other playmakers. At Texas he HAS to keep the locals happy. It's much like it is in south Florida when you think about it

Strong did too with 14 players drafted and 3 in the first round

11 of the starters were not from the state of Florida.

Dude had the most draft picks at UNC. Say what you want about him as a coach, xs and os guy, or his age or any of that. However, the man is the most insane talent evaluator developer in College history. Hands down.

I get it, Butch is my number one choice. The point of the thread was to discuss who else could come close to this.

I dont think anyone would come close, at least no one we know of yet.

Who comes the closest though. Who can recruit all of these areas. I know they won't all end up in the 1st round like that team.

I think if you brought in Pagano or Chip Kelly you could recruit any state you want. Herman would do very well in many spots too. I think Mike Gundy would have a wide range. Interesting to think about for sure.

I can assure you that you have to keep the locals happy in all of the big time high school states. I live in GA and lived in TX and just like FL all of those states want the top local talent. If Strong is at Miami he gets the local talent, but does he get the needed talent from out of state?

With any coach but for the purpose of this thread you can assume each coach would hire similar assistants as their hiring record suggest.

I agree with everything here but to play devils advocate

Mario didn't just get kids from south Florida. He locked up the best players from all over the country Mario Cristobal All Time Recruits

However, he is doing this at Bama, a program with the strongest national brand.
