This wr core is mediocre and the qb isn’t as good of a processor as we thought. That plus the oline is just mid pass blocking, our drop back game will be up and down all year- I can nitpick about Dawson, but it’s hard to blame him when ur QB plays like that. His int, accuracy, decision making, and pocket presence were not up to standard. Offensive line is mid, everybody got beat multiple times throughout the game. Why does it feel like nobody is ever open at the top of Mensah’s drop backs?
- I think overall Heathermen’s game plan was fine, until he tried to be cute and FSU took full advantage every single time. Defensive line, we are missing those technicians on the edge. Blount is terrible with his hands, dude just bull rushes. Wilson is fine, but outside of him theirs 0 difference makers on the edge.
Our trenches are not that great. OL can have one guy thoroughly beaten on every play.
DL is tough up the middle but our ends aren't world beaters.
Heatherman isn't stupid. He isn't playing man more because our DBs just aren't that good. I don't care what anyone says. The hype is all just that, hype. Our DBs are the most overrated position group on the team. It's been like straight Iraqi level propaganda. There is just no way you watch this same approach to playing us (getting rid of the ball quick) and not realize that good man will give your DEs an extra half a second to get there. This idea that he doesn't do it more because he is stupid is weird. He doesn't do it because he doesn't trust them. OJ may have made a diff but he aint here and this is the team we have.
OP post about rushing four on that last TD by FSU... dropping seven wouldn't of made one bit of difference. Lucas got his doors blown off all day by Deuce. If you want to chalk it off to game legs ok but... I just dont see him as one of the best DBs in the ACC. I saw Clemson's DB and Lucas aint anywhere close to that.
Those two hail marys were not by accident. On both plays we tried to intercept the ball when we should have been trying to knock the ball away.
Mallory is easily our best option at RB but even after ripping off 10 to 20 yard runs he was consistently benched for guys who aren't that great. If the middle is clogged he immediately busts it outside with ease. Fletch would pause there and wait and then get nothing on most of those plays. On that TD run every other back on this team gets tackled from behind. Pringle is just used wrong. Fletcher is stuck in this wait and see run mode this year that aint working on a consistent basis. Lyle did some ok things but FSU's run defense is prob the worst we will see this year and the only back that was able to take advantage of that was Mallory. If he doesnt start from here on out it's because out coaches don't put winning first. Fletch seems to be more of a second half bruiser or someone you put in for pass protect.
The safety blitzes that started from Aventura mall had me scratching my head. We're a mash unit on D...that said...I started calling him Heathermanny with those blitzes getting us in so much gd trouble![]()

If you think the wr corps is mediocre it is really hard to have a coherent discussion. This wr core is mediocre and the qb isn’t as good of a processor as we thought. That plus the oline is just mid pass blocking, our drop back game will be up and down all year
Agreed with almost everything. Heatherman deserves some criticism but people talking about the blitz on the play lucas got beat and not the coverage from lucas is baffling to me. Its like people just criticize whatever they can see
Outside of mali it has been so far. Thats just what the film and production saysIf you think the wr corps is mediocre it is really hard to have a coherent discussion.
LOL, I don't think you can call a corps mediocre and get to exclude 1 guy from the corps.Outside of mali it has been so far. Thats just what the film and production says
Thornton didnt start the game. Losing Poysner was a killerToney and Mallory the MVP's of the game.OK, I think I finally got my breath. Miami wins 43-35 in double OT versus an FSU team that many people thought couldn't roll over and play dead at this stage. I'm more relieved than euphoric.
It's alright to say it, Miami got away with one tonight at Hard Rock
With that said, Miami is the better team, but for much of the game tonight they were not. That's the reality. And quite frankly they played a very uneven game tonight. I still think their best football is ahead of them -- but am I just being a blind optimist? This team still has a lot to shore up.
But you know what they say about winning -- it beats losing. And now it's three straight versus the Noles, that always feels good regardless of the state of their programs. Rivarly wins matter, always
Some other thoughts on this game..
-- Darian Mensah had good numbers (24 for 24, 326 yards, 3 TD' and 1 INT) on paper, but in watching this game, I thought this was the worst of his UM career. Now, maybe it says something about the standard we have for him, or how well he played. But that interception on the 1st drive of the 2nd half was a killer(and he had room to run for about 6-10 yards). That was a bad decision.
Other times, it looked like he held the ball too long. But hey, he was steady later in the game when it counted.
-- Javion Mallory has become running back 1A. His vision and ability to run to daylight is rare. Tell me his overtime TD run didn't have you thinking of Frank Gore vs FSU in 2004 on that Friday night that was the game winner)
-- Malachi Toney, do I need to say all that much. Big time players make big time plays, in big time games. Honestly, I thought we should've fed him more as the offense bogged down at times. Call him Jerry West, he is 'Mr Clutch'. His impact, every game, goes beyond the numbers.
- OK, now, the bad. I think the world of our defensive coordinator, Corey Hetherman, but I still can't get over the defense/pressure he brought at 28-21 with about 2:40 left. As Duce Robinson was going down the sideline for the tying score, I had Chafie Fields flashbacks.
Im not a coordinator, Im just a fan (I realize that) but my view is that you rush four, drop seven and let Ashton Daniels make a few throws before dialing up anything to heat him up. To get beat like that on the first play was mind-boggling, when you had the whole field to defend was puzzling.
-- Then in the second OT, I realize our players and maybe our coaches are too young to know who Tom Jackson was. But what did he say about defending 'hail mary' throws? KNOCK IT DOWN!! Our guys, even on that last INT, we're not doing that.
I will say this, the Dline got really good pressure in the 2nd OT.
Also, earlier in the game, the screen game -- a Norvell specialty- was killing Miami. They looked totally unprepared for a facet of the FSU offense that you knew was coming.
So that's it. I need to sip a Coors Light (the Rocky Mountain sensation) and relax a bit.
Not exaggerating but if we didn't have Toney tonight, we would likely have lost. He is that special of a player. This kid is unbelievable.
Kudos to the team for not folding after FSU scored in the 1st OT to go up 35-28.
I agree, Mallory is Gore 2.0. His running style reminds me of Gore plus he has power like McGahee/Davenport.
Lofton is a stud TE. Keep feeding him the ball when toney and Barkate aren't open.
I think we need to play Thornton less, he is a liability in space in tackling and coverage.
Agree. Nobody has talked much about what a big void he left when he was ejected.Thornton didnt start the game. Losing Poysner was a killer
Well that’s the point i was making, i just didn’t mention it this time cause i have said it like 20 times the last two daysLOL, I don't think you can call a corps mediocre and get to exclude 1 guy from the corps.
which is why he should be a downhill box-defender, never out in space -- and our designated 3rd down pass rusher, LOL
he'd be the modern day Javon Nanton!!
You always talk about Miami being in the entertainment business. Well, there are different ways to get to the same place….OK, I think I finally got my breath.
