Where is everyone located?

Most people know about our recent Canadian players, Romberg and Mercier come to mind.

Most don't realize that Alonzo Highsmith came from Canada before he played at, I think, Columbus. At least I think he did. His father, Walter, played in Canada.
There was also Ian Sinclair who played on the 83 championship team.

Born in Brooklyn, raised in Boston. HS Orlando, college Miami. Currently in Tampa.

Great thread. Born at Jackson Memorial (pretty sure that makes one a Cane for life) , then Fort Lauderdale, WPB, Lake Worth and now Manassas Virginia.

Feller was a 6th grade teacher still when I was there. Lou Singer was a nice guy. He would go to Beth Sholom sometimes, where I had my Bar Mitzvah. I know you remember Moderne Pharmacy. Was Stan's there too then, on the Beth Sholom side of 41st Street?
You knew Rabbi Kronish?

There was a drugstore across 41st street where we used to go to the soda fountain. This was late 50's, early '60's. I think there was a little bridge that took 41st street to the area where My. Sinai and Nautilus we're. If you turned right after the bridge, there was a little restaurant called "Jimmy's Just a Hobby."

BS was right across the street from North Beach Elementary, wasn't it?

I remember a Lums on 41st St. There were several other drug stores and they all had coffee shops and soda fountains. Every drugstore did in those years

I had been away for many years and went with some people to see Deep Throat in San Francisco. Probably around '74-5. With a group of people. They were probably annoyed when I pointed out landmarks saying, "....and that's where I used to wait for the city bus coming back late from junior high." I think it was probably around 41st & Collins.
.
There was Coach Greenhut who taught P.E. at Nautilus in the late '50's. Probably the same guy.

I had some friends on Allison too. We weren't allowed in LaGorce CC back when I was a kid as it was restricted (for Jews) still. Now my Uncle is a member. Things have changed there for sure.
I used to have the paper route (Miami Beach Sun, I think) in Bal Harbor. They didn't allow Jews to live there. Sometimes I got harassed by the kids living there. I think it was the Sun because at some times I delivered the Miami News.

Now I think the mayor is ******. It's changed a lot

There was an island near Surfside that was exclusive and had homes of the very wealthy. All the years I lived there never set foot on that island. Also restricted to Jews.

Can't remember the name of the island.
.EDIT: I found an article on Indian Creek Island. Still very exclusive, mostly billionaires. Lived right near it but could never go on it.

MATADOR, do you remember John O'Day? He was on that team also. He and wife, Cookie, still live in the Gables. Our son received a scholarship in 1983 & played football for UCF under Coach Lou Saban who, by the way, told us that Miami was the only place he regreted leaving. We looked on the freshman roster and saw the name John O'Day.....Jr. Yes, it was John's son and he and our son became good friends (and still are) and their initial bonding was the fact that their fathers played together at Miami.

BTW, the following year, Coach Saban introduced O.J. Simpson @ the Hall of Fame induction in Canton, Ohio and my husband and I attended & met up with him and he introduced us to both O.J. and Joe Willie Namath. Also later met Roger Staubach. Fantastic day.

I assume your initials are GM? Correct?
Wrong on the initials. Sometimes people think I'm the real Matador. No, but he's one if my all-time heroes and one if the greatest Canes ever. I took the handle to honor him.

Watching him in the OB on Saturday night was such an exciting experience.

One of my other all-time heroes was Don Bosseler. About ten years ago I connected with Don's son who was practicing law in SW Florida. He's in a firm with offices around the country and I think he is in Mississippi now. When I corresponded with him about ten years ago he told me his father was doing well.

Recently, an internet website published a list of the 101 greatest UM players and I think they left Don off. That is absolutely insane given that for a long time Don was the only UM player to be enshrined in the College FB HOF.

I do remember John O'Day. George McIntyre became UM freshman team coach in the 60's I believe.

I only met Phil Geatz once, and that was in Morgantown before the '86 game. I always meant to get to get back in touch, but didn't. He was tall but I don't remember the color of his hair. Phil said he would have driven down to DC for our Hurricane Watch parties. Unfortunately, we did most of the games ad hoc and on short notice. It often depended on what ABC was showing in our region and the map came out earlier in the week so there wasn't much notice. Now, there's always a choice, it seems.

Was Jim Otto on the team around that time?

EDIT: I found an old roster from around '59. A few of the other guys from that era when I've met were Vic Savoca and Bill Watts. Both lived in the D.C. area for a time.

2nd generation North Beach Grad here. Were Mr. Greenhut and Mr. Singer there when you attended? If you say Meisner was your principal then you were there with my Mom or uncles.
What years did your mom or uncles go to North Beach?

Matador, yes I remember Phil Geatz, but didn't know him well personally. Wasn't he married, tall and had light-colored hair?? Doug and Marge Hildebrandt lived in our dorm and Jack & Margie Nelson (he was an olympic swimmer and is in Miami's HOF.) Unfortunately, the Hildebrandt's and Nelson's subsequently divorced. Doug and I were married and lived in the "married" dorms on ****erson Dr. on campus - the 3rd dorm down nearest the little bridge than went over from campus area to the football field. These dorms were torn down a number of years ago and I think replaced with parking and athletic facility but the little bridge is still there. I try to get down a couple of time a year for games....still love my Canes!

Doug was born and raised in Jacksonville, FL and was one of 3 from Jax. who signed with Miami in 1957...George McIntyre, Doug and a guy who graduated from Bishop Kenny in Jax.....can't remember his name. Good grief, I turned 80 this year and am delighted that I can remember my own name!!! Doug and I attended the 25th alum function celebration (graduated in 1961) and we won a silver chalas for being married the longest (to the same person). LOL He passed away from cancer in 1998. I still keep in touch with one of his good friends, Fred Iden. And yes, Curci was the QB and in addion to All-American, I believe he was also inducted into Iron & Arrow. Smart fellow.
Actually, I never attended UM so I don't remember the campus geography that well. In fact, I've never been on the campus that many times over the 50 or so years I've been following UM sports.

I remember Doug Hildebrandt by name. I've seen Jack Nelson's name probably athletic department publications or UM HOF website.

There's a website that I found that sells old game tapes or DVDs. Apparently this guy has been able to find various college games going back to the '60's and maybe the '50's. You might remember Tony Cristiani who was an A-A for us in the early 70's. His wife bought some tapes or DVDs and gave the site a good review and it was posted it on the website. She was apparently not his first wife and had never had the opportunity to see him play.

I don't know if they have games back to Doug's era and the tapes or DVDs might be expensive. I could let you know once I find it again.
