When you think of garbage, think of Akeem.

Their problem has nothing to do with their size... Their are both bigger than Tutu Atwell and Roscoe Parrish... The only size WIggins has is height but he weighs about a buck seventy. Compile his slenderness along with his lack of aggression towards and some of the worst body control of D1 WR that I've seen and this is the kind of production you get.
I understand... I'm just saying that very few teams have TWO starting wrs that look like middle schoolers.

Devonta Smith is built similar to Pope but he plays physical. Do you see a Pope hanging on to that TD catch in the back of the endzone like Smith did?
Lol man **** no pope ain't hanging on to that. But yeah I guess the big difference is that the small wrs on other teams play aggressive and bigger than their actual size. Devonta Smith plays like he's twice the size of Pope.

Pretty sure this was the first game D didn't give up points on the opening drive (I guess Whipple didn't get the word that he has to script his first drive against us). I've been openly critical of Baker and that stat has really rustled my jimmie. Pitt was able to get it up to our 31 before the Miller/Harvey sack stalled the drive. Still have my reservations about Baker and his scheme, particularly against better offenses, but the D bailed out the O yesterday. I thought Roche played well and did a better job keeping contain than he has in previous games.

Dunson's tackle on the fake punt was huge.

Lou Hedley was dropping bombs yesterday, even when he had to punt traditionally. His ability to flip the field when our offense stalls can't be understated. I really hope he gets his shot in the League.

Clemson and Pitt were the toughest D's we're gonna face all year, so I'd love to see the O light up UVA next Saturday.

Wiggins, Harley, Pope (had a decent game today) are embarrassing.

I'm pretty confident that if someone looked up the intended target for 50% of the INTS the last three years you'd see Harley's photo.
Lmao I swear about 3 of them picks jarren threw vs vt last year he was targeting harley

Compared to the vast majority of QBs out there, King has only had a handful of practices with his teamates and has still has us #31 in total offense compared to what, #100 or so last year?

Some of you drone on and on and on and on about what he can't do ad nauseum but fail to acknowledge he threw 4 TD passes yesterday and we are averaging 37 ppg in confererce play this year, with the best two defenses we play, BY FAR, already in the rear view mirror.

Don't some of you ever get tired of your inseccant moping?
*incessant

Macho, did you see a lot of open guys running downfield and king just not seeing them or was there very little openings? It was tough at times to see on tv but I saw even Payton struggle with press. Is ANYONE able to get off press?

And by "Akeem" I mean UM's starting WR unit.

I was at the game today. My boy X got me tickets, sat with his family. I was told the young WR's would get lots of opportunities today, specifically X. (per Likens mouth)
Didn't see what I hoped for.

This was my first game since the Covid. Pretty awkward experience. I must say, with the current situation I much rather watch it at home. I didn't enjoy being reprimanded by the Hard Rock Mask Enforcement Agency every time I lowered my mask to get a breath of fresh air or a sip of my delicious $19 soft drink. This fvckin' guy in our section was like a got**** gnat!

And man, I know we won but for some reason it didn't feel like that afterwards. Now that I'm back home and just finished giving a petite silicon-breasted Cubanita the best 2.5 minutes of her life...I'm sitting here with a fresh order of extra crispy lemon pepper wangs and a side order of optimism. (or maybe it's just the Cubanita and LP wings that have me feeling this way)

OFFENSE
I'm as frustrated as many of you are, but I'm trying to look at things from a different perspective. Pitt plays a PRESS QUARTERS coverage, which is basically just Cover-0 with the CB's beating up the WR's at the line. We already know how our WR's struggle against 1-on-1 press coverage, so I didn't expect anything from them this game anyway. Even FIU and UAB played press on our WR's. They're THAT bad! When your outside WR's have ZERO SHOT to get open, it severely limits your offense. Let me put it into perspective for yall...

There's 5 eligible WR's on every play, but generally the offense only uses 4 since most of the time the RB stays in for protection.
If I can effectively eliminate 2 of those WR's by "canceling them out" via press-man coverage, that means I can play zone/brackets versus the other 2 WR's with my remaining 5 defenders in the secondary. (which will completely take away the middle of the field)
So for those of you that are wondering why we don't throw to the middle of the field more, it's likely because it's a 5-on-2 matchup within the hashes (in favor of the defense).

Before we give Lashlee too much ****, let's consider those facts. Let's also consider HOW he was able to generate 31 points versus a defense that hasn't given up 31 (in regulation) all season.

*If a defense is going to play press Quarters (aka Cover-0) then the one place you can exploit them is getting your RB involved the passing game via the middle. Lashlee employed this idea for our first TD. The Safeties have no choice but to cover the slot WR's. So if the slot WR's run the Safeties off, your RB will be one-on-one with a LB. Well what's an easy way to get that RB open? Run a fake QB run, pull the Guard to suck the LB's in, then sneak the RB right down the pipe. TOUCHDOWN. Creative call by Lashlee to scheme up a wide-open pass catcher.

*Another way to ***** with press-man coverage (or any match zone coverage) is to run bunch sets and/or have WR's cross as they're stemming their routes off the LOS. This screws with the distribution of coverage responsibilities and can sometimes lead to busts in coverage. We just saw it on Waddle's 90 yard TD in the Bama/Georgia game, and we saw it earlier today on Harley's long TD. The distribution of routes by our WR's caused 2 Pitt DB's to cover the same guy and leave Harley wide open. Again, Lashlee scheming up a wide open WR.

*Earlier in the game we ran a formation that had Cam Harris set-out wide at WR and only Will Mallory in the backfield. When I saw this I said "WTF are we doing? This is obviously a QB run!" I originally thought it was a terrible call because as a DC I KNOW you're not handing the ball to Will Mallory, I'm thinking QB run immediately. Well it got stuffed and I was thoroughly SMH. Well remember how Lashlee ran an unsuccessful play early in the Louisville game, only to come back later and run a wrinkle off that SAME PLAY (that had Rooster running wiiiiiide open for a TD)? Well he did it again today. Lashlee came back to that same formation and this time FAKED the QB run and had Mallory run wide open up the seam.

We don't have the skill or talent to beat anybody one-on-one, so Lashlee is forced to use creativity to scheme guys open. On all 4 of our TD's today, guys were SCHEMED open.

Now, am I happy with everything we do on offense? No. But you have to be objective and look at the circumstances. WE FVCKIN' SUCK ON THE OUTSIDE! And as I mentioned earlier, when you can effectively "cancel out" two WR's, that leaves the offense with a very unfavorable numbers disadvantage. (specifically 5-on-2)

I also might add that being at the game, and having an endzone vantage point, allowed me to see that King does in fact miss wide open WR's at times. Folks, I know we're excited to finally have a decent QB, but he's far from the goods. Other than his occasional scrambles, he ain't exactly doing the offense any favors either. His vertical throws are usually pretty terrible. And the times that we do have WR's open in the middle/intermediate part of the field, he doesn't see them. (starting to wonder if that's a height thing) One could argue that height attributed to his first interception. And his second INT was a phenomenal call by Pitt's DC. That actually is supposed to be the open throw versus press-quarters, but Pitt called a "trap" coverage on that play, figuring that we would throw a route to the sticks. If you watch the CB on that play, he shows man coverage for like the first 5-7 yards and then converts into a Cover-2 zone. He was right there for that route. Great call by their DC.

As far as not being able to run the ball well...
Pitt makes it tough on their opponents. Again, they basically play Cover-0 and their defenders are aggressive towards that box. The only way to loosen them up is to win at WR, and our guys can't do it. Until we get those young guys rollin, or recruit some better talent, Lashlee will have to keep being creative to scheme guys open.

I've said my part over and over again. Nothing has changed. Same ****, different Saturday.

SIDENOTE: I bought a throwback UM Starter jacket today. 2 Live Crew style baby! Now I just need a gold rope chain if anybody's got one for sale.
Original green satin or the new starters?

I’ll give you the WR argument.

however, I wouldn’t say he was “excellent” throwing the deep ball at Houston after watching all the games I could find of him when he announced he was coming here.
Stats show otherwise in that 2018 season. Look it up

Okay and how many drops has he had this year? ALOT

Those are career #'s not just this year. When he's pressured and isn't throwing from a good base his arm strength shows a huge drop off.

Not excusing the WR's by any means they are terrible.

Harley is basically the WR version of Alonzo Highsmith, Jr.

Watched uga vs bama, clemson vs gt, fsu vs nc and highlights from all the other games. I didn't see 1.... NOT ONE wr that was built like Pope and Harley. Even everyone's "small" wrs are built better than ours. Oh and btw, literally every game had a wr that jumped for a ball and fought for it. Wiggins has yet to use his size to his advantage. We need an overhaul ASAP.
Wiggins gets hurt from just tripping and falling. If he jumps and falls he’s dead.

It still feels like we aren’t running tempo anymore To the degree we were running it the first few games. Usually defensive head coaches like to slow the game down to protect their defense, so this would make sense but tempo and rhythm is the entire name of the game for this offense and if you don’t use it you lose a big piece of what makes it tough to defend.

So on the long Mallory TD, Lashlee threw the equivalent of the setup pitch earlier in the game. Awesome insight. And a sign of a good play caller.

X did play a lot. Just didn’t get a ball thrown at him that I recall.

No one, at this point, can argue our WR situation.

I don't know why some here are surprised about King if you watched his OU game.
That being said, we just played against the best D coordinator and the best Defense (schematically vs us) we will see.
I hate to throw around stats like they're gospel this early in the season, but our next 5 opponents have given up at least 37 points in at least 2 games. That's with only 4 or 5 games played.

We will average around 40 ppg and get clicking again in that span, IMO.

The defense?
We are who we are.
Every game I'm looking to hold opponents to FG's when they get into the red zone (4.6 pg/58th in the country).
We do pretty well at that allowing TD's only 48% of the time, which is 13th in the country.
I'm reaching for a silver lining, I know, smh.

I think its time to consider kicking John Campbell to guard, and moving Zion to LT fulltime. That gets our 5 best OL on the field. Clark played better today, but he still isn't good enough to play at this level. He gets physically overwhelmed way too often.

80 posts in and I'm the one asking for pics of the cubanita?
For the rest, I'm just glad we're playing in the ACC and can out talent a lot of teams. Hopefully the offensive schemes we're showing as a possibility will get will get us to the talent level we can actually compete with Clempson and the rest of the truly elite teams. At this point, winning the rest of our season games and a bowl game are gonna be huge to keeping our class together and maybe getting a few more elite guys to buy in. A change in the defensive staph would probably pay dividends also. imo the good news is the future is way brighter than the dark ******* tunnel we were looking down last year. Just keep beating the teams we should beat.
