What's your short list look like? Golden replacements

I'm all aboard the Narduzzi train if we go coordinator.

But I have to admit, Gary Patterson's name rings to me this time around. Patterson and his counterpart Chris Petersen were always comfortable at their smaller schools. It's all about the right timing and opportunity though. Petersen left for UW once he realized he couldn't get into the playoffs with Boise. Gary, meanwhile, coaches a school that is, at best, 4th option in his own state. This guy has to wake up and go against an SEC Texas A&M, a surging Baylor program, Texas always being Texas and that's before Oklahoma and Texas Tech come to the table. Our best bet would be that Patterson realizes he will never win big at TCU. His salary is $3.4 million, higher than Al but not in the stratosphere. Could he be attainable if we can pay comparable salary and sell him on winning big at Miami? I know it's not probable, but it worked with Petersen. Maybe wishful thinking...

Excellent stuff on Patterson. Same hope I have for a guy like him. I think he was all set to take the Kansas State job a few years ago and it fell apart at the last minute.

He's shown he will adapt too because he completely scrapped his offense he'd been running forever this year because he realized he stood no shot with it in the Big 12. He needed to score more to compete and be more up tempo. So far so good on the change.

I'd love to see what he could do with the athletes he could get here.

I cringe at the numbers Phillip Montgomery would put up with South Florida talent.

That's flat out scary. They'd drop 90 points on a team, just cause.

Google that man's name and imagine him with the talent Miami gets..

Only thing that gives me pause with a guy like that is that Briles is such a genius. How much is Montgomery, and how much is Briles?

You guys are crazy thinking UM could afford Stoops. It would mean UM would have to pay: (1) the balance or buyout on Golden's contract + (2) Stoops' buyout + (3) Stoops' new multi-million contract. Two words...not happening.

For many reasons, Butch might be the right hire. Not the least of which is money since he is currently unemployed in the coaching profession.

Classic ADAP.

Please tell us the buyout for Golden. Tell us the terms of Stoop's Contract as well.

No clue. But, c'mon...Golden has 5 years left and Stoops is in Year 2 of a 5 year deal and currently makes $2.1 million, plus incentives. Surely, both contracts contain buyouts. That will cost the University several millions before paying Stoops a single dollar.

I can can see the Universify focusing its efforts on current assistants without long term contracts or former head coaches that are currently unemployed. It will save them a significant amount of money. It's a plausible scenario especially for an institution that historically is frugal with its athletic spending.

You want reasoning and logic on a message board? LOL.

You want only facts and only those with first-hand knowledge to post and contribute to finding a solution? It's a freakin' internet message board. By definition it is full of conjecture, unsubstantiated facts and opinion. That why we visit the site.

Do do you really think agents and lawyers or BOT members are suddenly going to chime in and provide perspective?

Start with your post stating that you have no clue, then go from there.

Ambitious, but attainable if admin actually decides to spend: Mark Stoops, Rich Rod, Todd Graham
Al Golden types (HC experience at smaller schools): Jim McElwain, Mark Hudspeth
Young, offensive coordinators: Rhett Lashlee, Phillip Montgomery, Scott Frost, Chad Morris
Defense coordinators: Pat Narduzzi, Kirby Smart, Brent Venables

Briles is not an option. That comes straight from one of the two people who basically built Baylors new stadium. He made briles latest contract and I talk to him twice a week. He is not leaving Baylor. Possibly ever

That explains it. Tom was NEVER EVER going to be a part of the family. Luca Brasi lives!

Patterson has surely been offered money to leave TCU and he hasn't. Why would he come to UM? Texas has good enough athletes he can recruit and TCU is clearly the best team in the DFW area. Patterson calls the shots at TCU and he wouldn't get that same opportunity here. His team might just win the big 12 and end up in the playoff.

Two more head coaches I would like to bring up. I'm not necessarily endorsing them, but just two guys that are proven coaches from schools that might look to come to UM for an opportunity to win. Both happen to hail from the same state...but what about Bronco Mendenhall or Kyle Whittingham? Mendenhall is 86-35 in his career, has never missed the post season and has won conference championships at BYU. Whittingham is 80-40, albeit he hasn't been as successful in the Pac 12 but he does have some big wins over Stanford and UCLA, he's 7-1 all time in bowl games and has had an undefeated season and BCS win. I'm not sure how realistic they are, but just kind of two more names to consider.

I've been telling my co-workers here in the ATL area (GT alum) that we may possibly have the worst coaching staff in the FBS. I cannot fathom how teams like Northwestern can knock off Wisconsin, Utah State over BYU, Utah over UCLA, etc. With top 15 recruiting classes the last 3 years, how in the world could a team like Utah State come in and beat us, because at this point I wouldn't count them as an automatic W.

A few things:

1. He is 4th/5th in the buffet line in Texas (recruiting). TAMpon, UT, Oklahoma and the combination of Baylor/OSU/Tech all take athletes ahead of TCU. This would be very different at UM. Meaning I think he could achieve MORE at UM because he would get higher quality athletes. Maybe he knows he can't get any better at TCU due to this and may want more. I don't know.

2. I don't know if he would come to UM. Neither do you. There was talk about him in 2006. I don't know if he would even consider leaving now. I'm just giving my thoughts of Patterson. I don't know what schools have tried to pull him away from TCU. Maybe now, after being in the Big 12 for 3 years and beating OU (5-0), a better selection will come by and make an attempt.

3. Shalala is gone. I'm hoping the next President will just hire someone competent and let them run the athletic department. Under this new person, perhaps we would give control to the coaches and make a hire like Patterson. I don't know the future but the current leader is going to be gone.

Oh. Thanks for googling. Back to my post and Chise's post.

Impossible to know (without testing it).
