What's happened to Linebacker U at the U?

We've had a great tradition of Linebackers at Miami with the likes of Hendricks ,Barrows,Morgan(favorite)
Lewis, Vilma, Williams and others to name a few.
And then we've had some LBs who were good to serviceable to not panning out.
Some suspect recruiting in certain LBs and of course some transfered out and a few were dismissed from the team
with our last 2 coaching staffs( Golden and Shannon)
Golden's 2011/12/13 LB classes overall left us with little talent and depth as well as production.

CMR brings in a trio of talented LBs in our 2016 class
This group bring talent, size, speed and athleticism to our LB unit
We have a lot of potential from our underclassmen on our roster

Can the current group of LBs bring back the nickname where it belongs?

I'm going with injuries, dismissals and scheme. Mostly scheme over the last 5yrs. Our last staff was absolutely awful, the only really smart position coach was Barrow, he left. The only other true Cane on the defensive staff, Hurlie, is going to have a tough time washing the stench of the 2 jersey pussoise off of him.

I think Young, Owens and Gayot can play ball at a high level. The 3 new members and EE's will push for playing time and make the 2deep a formidable group. I think our 3 new Canes are going to make a lot of us very happy and opposing RB's, QB's, WR's, TE's and OC's miserable for years to come. Coach Kool(Dr. Frankenstein) will have some monsters up front and Coach Diaz is gonna step on the gas making everyone better as offenses have to play on their heels. Dammit, my optimism is back. Please, football gods don't let it be for naught again.

My $0.02

Go Canes!

No love for Denzel?

I got love for DP and Grace but if you look at our recruiting of LBs under Golden, so much attrition from a position he's play at PSU was puzzling.

Prime example D.Peryman's 2011 Class
G.Paul-Dismissed from team transfers to Utah had 2 solid seasons there
A. Kinard-Failed Academically
E. Johnson-Transfer out
T. Armbrister-starts Sr year. Not much of an impact player at Miami

2012 Class
R.Kirby- A Starter
J.Blue- dismissed (rape)
G.Terry-Dismissed (Felony Marijuana Possession)
J.Witt- Health reasons

2013 Class
J. Grace- Starter
A. Figueroa- Dismissed(Rape)
D. Bond Jc recruit- Gone

These classes provided a lack of much needed talent and depth.

A lot of wasted talent came here under Golden and hopefully that changes under Richt.

Imagine Gionni Paul who turned out to be very good, Eddie Johnson( highest ceiling of them all...) roaming the linebacker corps with Denzel perryman... That's what happened to the position.... Perryman is up there with the elite linebackers that has come out of the U. The depth is getting back though especially with the 2016 class...

Truest thing said on this thread was that Eddie Johnson had the potential to be the best linebacker of them all. Kid was a physical and athletic freak. Closest thing we've had to a 2001 team linebacker since Jon Beason. Not hating on Denzel, he is a savage and will be a perennial pro bowler but Johnson was the real deal.

Al and Mark aka Dumb and Dumber happened. That is in the past now.

Quarterman, McCloud, Pinckney, Wilder and Steed are the future.

Folden played Tight End, Dorito played Linebacker.

The entire football program has been in shambles for over a decade and this guy is asking why we aren't LB U anymore.

I'm sorry but to me that statement either shows a lack of football knowledge as a whole or simply a lack of um history. But to say Denzel is up there among the best we ever put out is insulting to those that came before him at best & insane to say the least. Yes Denzel was a beast underneath & would make you pay if you tried anything down low. On the other hand he was a free completion 10 out of 10 times when he'd be asked to drop into coverage. Conceivably may be the worst coverage linebacker we have ever had(as a starter) So please when youre discussing a school that has put out some of the best linebackers in the history of both college or pro football please put some more thought into your statement before it comes out of your mouth. #raylewisendorsesthismessage

Some of them are at other schools. We could still be Linebacker-U if our coaches weren't clueless.

Denzel is nowhere near Miami's elite. People are just infatuated with his hard hits.

Spence was better than him.

So a player who steps in day 1 dominating the NFL is not an elite linebacker from Miami?whatever.... What a Nostalgic post. I'd like to see the other elite linebackers play with the players perryman had to play with and coaches that were around him at the U... Despite all that perryman still showed up nearly every game...

No way is Perryman was worse then Romeo Davis nor pom pom Futch in pass coverage!
DP was one **** of a Linebacker while at Miami.
FYI Perryman is ninth in tackles at Miami with 341

I don't know what elite actually means, but hating on Denzel seems a little ridiculous.

Compare Denzel's defensive line vs what Beason or Vilma or Morgan or Lewis or Barrow or Moss, etc had in front of them. How good would he have been on those teams? Complain about his coverage, but it's hard to cover receivers with no pass rush. He was Dorito's highest drafted Miami defensive player at 48th overall and our highest drafted defensive player since 2008. Only 8 Miami linebackers in our history were drafted earlier in the NFL draft than him. To us fans, even just getting drafted playing in that system is a major accomplishment in itself. He also did pretty well this year in the NFL. In his last 9 games for the Chargers, he averaged close to 7 tackles per game.
