What was your most disappointing loss/hardest-to-take loss as a Canes fan?

For me it's the games that cost us a Natty, either for the Natty or a regular season game.
It looks like all were mentioned except for BYU '92.

In the "wtf is going on" category:
-'93 Arizona
-'96 ECU
-'07 UVA
-That GT game where they ran for 300+
-'20 UNC
-'22 MTSU

I was there, homie. One of the weirdest nights of my life. My pops and I left at some point in the 4th quarter, and from the minute we stood up from our seats until we got into the car at least 20 minutes later, neither of us said one single word. Not one. When we got the car started, I remember one of us saying something like “what the **** just happened??”

If you’d have made me bet my life in that car whether or not Miami would ever be a serious program again, I wouldn’t have hesitated to tell you absolutely not. That was rock bottom. Below rock bottom. I can’t even articulate how thankful I am for every person involved in getting Mario here and helping him set up what he has.

These two are 1 and 2! I had just moved to PA in 1986 to go to college. I talked a lot of smack that fall only to watch Vinny cough the game away. I had to eat a big sh.. sandwich after that. The "Not Interference" game needs no explanation. Close behind was ND in 88. Not a fumble. I do have to mention I was actually at the Flutie game in 84. I walked out of the Orange Bowl feeling numb! Didn't care that I just witnessed a classic.
 
2003 Fiesta Bowl loss to Ohio State is the answer for me.

OSU played us dirty and Porter robbed us dirty. I was heartbroken in a way that never healed.

Played us dirty? Yes they were gunning for players’ legs, especially Willis. After the game one of their players was quoted saying something to the effect of “We knew that for us to win we had to get him out of the game.” Willis still went in the 1st round after that and had a good career, but he never fully got his speed back after that injury.

So in my mind, we were robbed of a title and Willis Mcgahee was robbed of some of the pro career shine he was supposed to get. I will NEVER stop hating OSU and that game def hurts me the most.
 
2020 UNC, for multiple reasons.

I'm younger than most on here, so I can't really speak on the 2000s, as I wasn't following football then. UNC was on our level. They were supposed to be close to us and it was supposed to be the game where we could establish ourselves as a name for the future. And we got our asses kicked like no tomorrow. Ironically, we played them with worse teams later on, and played them tighter and more competitive compared to that game.

We were a rusty Ford with a paint job and a Ferrari badge on it. Looks nice, maybe sounds nice if the exhaust is rusted off, but it's a rusty Ford after all.

Realized back then we aren't ****, we won't ever be **** with doofus at the helm and it's just another three years wasted. Someone else on here wrote that he couldn't watch Indiana - I cringe every time I see Javonte Williams on the football field, even to this day. It's the number one memory I want to erase out of my brain.

A friend of mine was there and was on the field afterwards

IIRC there was maybe fireworks or confetti or something along those lines. I just remember him telling me this stuff was coming down from the sky and he was standing there and it felt like one of those apocalypse movies where the ashes are coming down

Yeah it wasn’t like we lost to a juggernaut team

It was Virginia ffs

I think the FIU game was up there. Not as bad but it also felt like another one of those moments where we were never going to recover.

Or I suppose FIU just felt like a reminder we would never be “back”. I’ve never been as flat out angry (I try not to do that to myself with sports anymore) as I was after FIU.

I'm willing to move it up to #4. Hard to crack the top 3, though...

Now, it might be #1 on my list of ANGRIEST moments. I'm still not over that split-squad of refs mistakenly thinking it was 4th and GOAL.

Lamar's knee was banged up late in the 1992 year. He was limping around campus. He was better by the Sugar Bowl game but was not 100%.

Terrible timing.
 
My go to games have already been listed in this thread, but the 2003 VT loss was our first loss that season before the Tenn loss. Cracking Roscoe Parish’s collarbone started a spiral that I thought we may have pulled out of already.
 
2006 FSU at the OB - My first Canes game in person. It was raining and it was an absolute awful performance.

2020 UNC
2023 GT
2025 Indiana

Those all immediately come to mind.

single biggest bunch of turds in the world. I have sisters who live in Cincinnati & will not go to sports bars due to the absolute abhorrent behavior

  • 2005 GT (stamped the beginning of things to come, was freezing as well)
 
LSU sugar bowl. Got our *** beat on the field and in the tunnel. Got blacked out drunk, woke muttering the score. Knew then the dynasty that could’ve been was never gonna be.

Penn State Fiesta Bowl 1987

We were far and away the better team. Vinny threw 5 pics and we still almost won.

We beat them 9/10 times if we played again.
