What to expect from TVD going forward.

I tried to warn people this will happen after the Temple game. You could already see the signs.

People love him too much to see the flaws or simply do not understand how to evaluate a QB. They laughed and faced palmed, said it would never happen and had total confidence in him, etc.

Last year was not all on the OC. He has serious issues. We are not playing Temple or Miami anymore. The games are only going to get tougher, and coaches have enough film to adjust. Forced throws to X. Forced throws to covered WRs, throws into the dirt. Can't read a D and needs wide open WRs...unless it is X then just throw it. This is who he is.

Buckle up, this is going to be some ride the rest of the way.

You could see looking at TVD’s face that he wasn’t comfortable all night (right off the rip). Something was off against GT. It was the same way he looked in his first 3 games starting as QB1 (before completely turning things around from start #4 onwards under Lashlee & putting up numbers in consecutive wks that have rarely been seen).

The surprising part of this is that the team had played really well the first four games. The offense had been really productive & fun to watch. You’d have expected TVD to come into this game riding high & confident.

TVD claimed that the change in the GT DC wouldn’t make much of a difference because “football is football” and with his significant experience playing at the D1 level, he should have been able to adjust & take what the D was giving him.

When he’s on, he’s a top 10 passer in CFB. When he’s off, he makes some head-scratching decisions instead of dumping the ball off to a RB or throwing the ball out of bounds. He forced a lot of throws into coverage against GT and those 3 INTs easily could have been 4-5.

All QBs & athletes have off days. For TVD to become a great QB, his off days need to have fewer really negative plays. How could that be achieved:

1) Watch a ton of film of Josh Allen distributing the ball beautifully for the Bills. A lot of his throws don’t have a high degree of difficulty & don’t result in explosive plays but he reads the D beautifully, makes quick decisions & finds the open man. TVD rarely throws to his RBs or the TEs. Steve Walsh almost never had an atrocious game for the Canes & part of that was the Gary Stevens system which incorporated significant use of throwing to the RBs & TEs. Those were high % throws that were easy to make & the targets were super reliable at getting open & catching the ball. We’re a little too WR-dependent currently in this O. Fun to watch when things are going well but we saw the downside on Saturday when the QB & WRs aren’t in synch.

2) Throw the ball away instead of forcing it. Dump it off to an outlet instead of forcing it.

3) Dawson could have brought either JB or Emory in for a series or two just to give TVD time to regain his composure. That doesn’t mean TVD is benched or being replaced. Simply means when things appear to be moving too fast for QB1, give him time to recalibrate. Spend a few minutes speaking with him on the sidelines. Let him calm down & help him to re-focus. Dawson was down on the sidelines & should have seen what was really apparent on TV. TVD didn’t look comfortable at all.

4) When the QB is struggling (and even the great ones have bad days — see Dorsey against BC in ‘01 which was tough to watch), mix in some different plays to take pressure off him. Jacurri was effective against GT last year & hasn’t used even one game this yr out of the 4 he’s allowed) so put him in to run a series or two from the wildcat formation. Alternatively, play Emory for a series or two as he’s shown tremendous poise so far. Run a reverse or two with Harrell of CJ. Have CJ tote the rock for 5-6 plays & maybe he gets an explosive play. We threw too much to the WR in this game (even though it wasn’t working well outside of X). We can’t be a one trick pony going forward or we’ll struggle as the O becomes way too predictable.

5) Tyler should continue to spend more time practicing with receivers not named X so he continues to develop that chemistry & can really depend on them in tough games.

6) Play & use Ladson more. Frank showed last yr in ACC play that he could be counted on to catch the ball & move the chains. He may not offer the same upside as Harrell but he has significant experience in big time ball & he was pretty consistent when he got burn last year. TVD needs to have more dependable receivers to throw to. Needs to be more diverse than locking in to X.

Hope TVD comes back confident & lights it up the rest of the way.

He showed signs of this under Lashlee

whoa whoa whoa pal, can't say that around these parts.

(I agree, and said it over and over until I just no longer cared to keep repeating myself).

We all know what his response to these interceptions is going to be... he's going to hold on to the ball longer and sacks are going to increase... hopefully the OL steps up..

Yep. Has the stench of last years offense all over it.

Short/intermediate and very vanilla. Check with me. Miscommunications on option routes, whereas the staple of air-raid passing concepts is simplicity and repeatability.

Reeks of Mario Cristobal putting his hands in it for no reason trying to fix something that was never broken. Or trying to hide **** from UNC and Clemson thinking we could just walk through GT.

I was begging for the deep ball all night and the only 2 we threw were huge plays. It was there any time we wanted it and instead we played conservative.
This offense has Mario’s **** skinners all over it, we dont seem to have this problem on defense

Oh Man!…you are not wrong on this.

This is my greatest fear. Dawson needs to really scheme some plays for TVD or else he could go right down into the abyss. Which, honestly, I do not understand why he didn’t do it for GT. So many great plays we used in four games just left behind.

Yeah, I am really worried about his play.

Lol.... TVD threw 3 picks....**** near 5..... and yet people are here talking about Dawson..... booooy the deflection lol. Y'all do this every time TVD has a bad game. but anyway, The only thing TVD surprised me with was that boy can really run when he wants to. That boy looked like flash to save himself from having a pick-6 on his stats 😂

People are beating the stupid fumble play to death and I get it, but the way more concerning aspect about the game on Saturday was TVD's mediocre play. I was very high on him following A&M, but he really hasn't been great since then and was really bad last year, maybe that's who he is. We won't beat the quality teams on our schedule with him playing this way.

I guess TVD is fine for where we are as a program right now but we have to start landing some stud qbs in recruiting or the portal. If we want to reach another level the qb position needs to be a lot more dynamic.

His first one was into triple coverage and cost us points. TVD is a up and down QB that’s just who he is. It’s clear that he only feels comfortable with X.

Dawson getting out schemed by the LB coach with 1 week of prep is my biggest concern, outside of TVD
This was a much bigger concern for me than anything else. Tyler has had games like this before and been fine the next week. The game plan against GT was terrible though. It's like they expected one thing and got the exact opposite and then didn't make any kind of adjustment. I was more disappointed with Dawson than with anyone else.

I mean they had a game plan to stop the run. We struggled because it was a new DC doing new things. That’s obvious.

Didn’t rule out the deep ball was there all night and the opportunity to burn them in play action over the middle was there. We hit it both times we tried it. Never did it again and those big plays didn’t sway GTs plan at all. Should have kept doing it
Yea I think the playcalling wasn’t good but i dont think mario had anything to do with that. It was just a bad gameplan and then not enough adjustments, not somebody holding anything back

Scary thing is UNC will do this and beyond. They always play us very well and will be super prepared. Drake Maye vs TVD just doesn't inspire confidence.
They don’t play each other lol. I think guidry will have a good plan but i gotta see our personnel cs theirs. But they do have a better defense at every level, and better coaching than gtech who had a new dc from a week ago

Passing offense didn't challenge the middle of the field. Most throws were to the boundary, specifically the boundary hash. Most of the night we seemed to cut the field into a third and play inside that. No deep crossers, no go routes, no slants, and nothing up the seams. it was a combo of comebacks and out routes. Wasn't anything like we have seen all season. Something was "off"
Im wondering if thats how the offense is structured because tvd doesn’t really attack the middle of the field much unless its a deep ball. Teams might just force him to play left handed, and take away the outside the number throws

He looked a lot like he did last year. His confidence gets shook when his O line slips and his WRs are well covered. He also got picked off by the same kinds of passes he lost to MTSU. Shallow dumps near the middle. He would be better off stretching the field.

Whats funny is, gtech gameplan was more similar to bethune. Bethune played alot of zone but they didn’t have the guys to keep up, some of those throws tvd made where into coverage where he should have worked back thru the concept. Coach hayes called it out in his breakdown
