What is wrong with our defense this year ??

1. Bad player personnel choices: Ivey, Jennings, Hall
2. Lack of talent at DE
3. Lack of talent at LB
4. Very young elite talents at S and experienced S playing poorly.
5. DT talent isn't elite and the young elite kid wasn't getting snaps until recently.
6. Lack of quality depth at CB.

I don't see an answer in our '22 class for DE or LB. S play should continue to improve IF JW is coachable. CB should improve in '22 with the big class coming in. DT should improve with LT getting more snaps.
One common denominator to any problem listed.
No D Manny

When Manny was DC '16-18. He benefited from the entire coastal having limp **** offenses. The very few times we encountered a functional offense/qb - he got exposed everytime. Including group of 5 schools like Toledo in 2017.

Now the coastal & ACC have plenty of above average QB's and it's just a continuation of him getting exposed.

This isn't correct and I've posted about it 100 times.

The answer isn't one thing, but the tackling has been horrendous, which has led to a ton of explosive plays...the pass rush has taken a major step back without Rousseau, Phillips, and Roche the last 2 years, and the redzone defense has been abysmal. We are 1 of only 2 teams in the entire country who have not gotten a single redzone stop all season. In 2018, for example, we were 15th in the country in Redzone TD% allowed. This year we are 93rd. The DBs aren't as anticipatory as kids like Quan, Sheldrick, Mike Jack etc, so we're allowing more freedom to opposing receivers, and the pass rush isn't getting home so QBs have more time to throw down there.

Manny Diaz has no feel for the game, his scheme is also extremely flawed, tackling, db’s can’t make the big play (this improved last week)

It’s not personnel. It’s scheme and coaching along with personnel decisions. We have the guys to be good. But manny can’t coach. His scheme is figured out. And just backwards in general. If you’re aggressive up front you can’t give free releases to the pressures QB. And he plays the wrong guys.

What part of bad LBs, bad upperclassmen safeties, only 1 good corner, average DEs, and a highly questionable scheme based on those shortcomings puzzles you?
We have enough talent to be at least average or above it, but why is our defense performing so poorly , specially if Manny is he true defensive coordinator ?

3 of the ACC QBs are on the Maxwell Award semi final list and none of them are DJ U or Sam Howell.

If we tackle in the UNC game alone, we win it.

This seems like a trick question…. Bad tackling and good qbs.

Nc St and Pitt put up yards and points against Clemson, they have better players and a better scheme but those are two very good offenses, it ain’t rocket science. SEC offenses are garbage this year, uga might still win the title but they’ll get scored on when they play a real qb.

A few years ago, they did the anonymous feedback article on our team and a coach said Manny's defense is very gimmicky. The gimmick has been figured out along with not having great personnel (which makes any scheme look better). We still haven't figured out how to play/coach zone defense either.

Manny Diaz and his trash scheme
The problem with his scheme is thst it requires elite players at most of the positions to be successful. If you have elite players at most of the defensive positions, you can play just about any scheme and be successful.

So, I'd say he doesn't have all the personnel for his scheme and there are better schemes out there don't require elite talent to be highly successful. What he lacks is versatility. He plays 1 style of defense and runs the same unsuccessful blitzes week after week that every team can see a mile away and has an audible for.

A good coach is going to adapt his scheme to his opponent each week. Diaz makes very few noticeable changes that are usually unsuccessful.

The zone part just blows my mind. How hard is to chop up some game video on the best zone defensive teams like Iowa who has less talent, but a better defense. Say to your guys, "Look!!! This is how you play zone at your position. Do what that guy does."

Our guys are like stick men out there covering an area and not the man in the area. Zone is just man-to-man in your area. Just like basketball. In basketball you don't just stand there in your area and watch your opponent cross your face, catch the ball, and score while you're standing flat footed. That's what we do. We also don't know how to drive on the ball in a zone. If a QB takes a 3 step drop, he has to plant and throw on his 3rd step. The DB should drive on the WR when the QB plants his foot in his 3rd step of his drop for pass break ups and interceptions.
.
We just don't teach zone well. I'm wondering if they just don't spend enough time with it as I expect T-Rob to be an excellent teacher. That would be Manny's call as to how much time in practice they spend on zone coverage and also what is being taught. T-Rob may be forced to teach what Manny wants and not necessarily how he would like to teach.

Mannys Defense needs smart Safeties and DEs that’ll get to the QB.. and Backers that can clean up in the second level.. he finally now towards the end the season has the Safeties he needs.. he doesn’t have the other positions..

He doesn’t have them due to his own doing.. he hasn’t been recruiting those spots at a high enough level.

We don’t have “enough above average talent.” Lber is a disaster. Our best corner isn’t even in his best position. Safety is young. D line is not talented enough, aside from the young guys.

We telegraph every blitz and most of those are from 30 yards out. Give recievers 10 yard cushions or just bail. D like has zero gap integrity. DT’s stunt their way out of tackles and DE’s run themselves out of plays trying to get to the QB.

Not sure what you are talking about OP, defense looks fine to me.
