What is Manny even saying here? PUnt return

I know there are experts here, so I will ask. Most punting-teams now put the punter and 3 blockers in the backfield. This gives them a legal formation and means that 4 players will not be covering the punt. Sooooo, why do receiving teams only put one back to return the punt? Why not put four guys back, one runner and three blockers? The three could catch very short punts (the kind that Pope fumbled), block defenders more effectively and recover muffs. Why doesn’t everyone do this?

For starters, you're now down 3 more guys if I run a fake.

I didn't think they'd **** with Pope's head like this before a big game but X is the guy. Lets go.
Unfortunately if Pope is this mentally fragile, he has a long road ahead in life.

We all want him to excel, but so far...

not to standard.

Manny must be reading CIS.
These message boards sometimes are able to make decisions quicker than the coaches, its the same reason like mentioned on through the smoke podcast that losing to FIU and Duke might have been a good thing because if not we would still have Enos because Diaz wouldnt really have a reason bad enough to change even tho we sucked.. Mediocrity is DEATH

Exactly.

If pulling him could shatter his already shaken confidence then he definitely needs pulled. The one job of the punt returner is for the ball to not hit the ground , the rest is gravy. He already has questionable hands so I never got putting him back there in the first place.
Preach!

Enough with the kid gloves. Pope needs to get the job yanked if he can't do it and let someone who earned it step up. We need to put guys out there that deserve to be out there and not because they need a confidence boost.

Hate to use one play as an example, but did you see how easily he fielded that punt late vs fsu? It was bouncing off the ground and he ran up with complete confidence the entire time. Pope had a brown stain on his pants as he was running up on the one vs fsu

It’s a little easier and no pressure when the game has already been decided. Pope is obviously not confident and nervous back there. I don’t care if X is a true freshman, if he’s confident might as well give him a shot.

Plus it’s easier for the return man to find an opening when you jam the punt coverage at the line and push them out of their lanes as they run downfield.

Most punt return schemes try to build a wall down one side of the field for the return man. It sets the punt coverage up better to have the punt return team start at the line then run to their spots to set up that wall

Also, if you are going for the return, you want to put hands on as many players as you can at the LOS and delay their route downfield. Putting an extra 3 guys back by the return man gives 3 guys on the punt team a free release all the way down field.

I'd be more comfortable having that 1 armed griffin kid who went to ucf returning punts vs pope at this point, make the switch to restrepo please & thank you.
