Golden lets No D go, and agrees to hire a new DC and give him complete autonomy? (Disclosure: I don't think AG does this without a ton of pressure from those who matter; I also think No D may resign out of loyalty to his friend. He can't feel good about putting his friend in this terrible position).
I like Golden, and I bet the people with decision-making authority do too (the AD, the President and the BOT). They (and I) appreciate him navigating the team through the Shapiro mess, which cannot be diminished. No one likes the results on the field. Some care more than others, and some are more willing than others to do something about it. Getting a new DC in here would probably satisfy enough people to let AG keep his job, at least for another year. Before this week, I think that would make me happy too.
But the other day we had these comments from AG with him describing DP being 6 yards deep vs 7-8 yards deep that the screenshots show. He said he's not supposed to be that deep. I'm just throwing this out there: Is it possible that AG doesn't know exactly what No D is doing? I fully believe AG has blessed the defensive schemes, and No D is running AG's defense, but is it possible that what we call his stubbornness is really him not knowing exactly what's happening? Is it possible that he sees the screenshots and has a WTF moment himself? The head coach has a lot to do and he has to delegate, and it is conceivable that AG trusts No D a little too much, and that the bulk of the blame lies with No D.
So, getting rid of No D and getting a new DC with autonomy could fix this mess. It keeps AG in the fold so as not to destroy the 4 years of relationship and community building AG has done with the local high schools (which should only get better with Ice on board). And I say "should" because I do think stud defensive players are seeing the garbage and they're going elsewhere, so maybe it doesn't matter as long as AG is the coach. Would kids go elsewhere if there were a proven commodity at DC at UM? Someone with a reputation of letting players play, and kicking a lot of ***? The DC replacement could be spun in a way in the press to convince everyone that things are changing for the better at UM. AG could admit the style he's used doesn't fit the UM style of doing things so he changed it.
So we've had a lot of talk about who AG's replacement should be. What about No D's replacement, if that's the way this thing goes down? Could UM pay Bud Foster $1 million? Would that make a difference? Who else?
