What I See: Ohio State Edition

-Downs is another one who gets favorable calls, look at that hit against Penn State that wasn't called targeting.
-We need to test Igbignosun. He's super handys and grabby. We should be able to draw a holding call on him.

9 of the top-10 least penalized p4 teams are from the BIG10.
That's not by coincidence or that they're 'clean' teams.
They just don't throw flags in that league.

Maybe neutral refs won't let them get away with the obvious stuff as much.
Funny thing is we had BIG10 refs during our game against Texas A&M. The game was relatively clean.

We're supposed to have ACC refs for our game against OSU so buckle up for a flag fest. Lol

Curry's motor runs HOT. He plays with max effort on a down to down basis but I don't think his style matches up well against Cici. Cici has the strength to nullify Curry. Jackson is benefiting from playing on an elite defense in my opinion. Jackson and Curry don't possess elite traits or passrush skill. Jackson is big and strong but will that affect 6'9 320lb Markell Bell? I doubt it.

Like I said earlier, I love our matchup against their edges.

In regards to getting vertical on OSU is going to depend on the refs. If the refs let Igbignosun grab and hold we'll have to attack the opposite side of the field. If they call it, attack Igbignosun. There will be opportunities because OSU loves to man up.
Yeah they're not skilled like Messi or Bain. They're just power and effort that's why I said we need to finish our blocks.

I was listening to a podcast from a guy who seemed to know his buckeye football. He said he doesn't expect Patricia to respect our deep ball and Caleb Downs will be down in the box. He said expect a lot of press man/single high.

I’d be curious to know if anyone believes there will be any fundamental differences with Day resuming play calling duties compared to Hartline, or do you think it will be fairly identical?
No one knows. Hetherman said it would probably take a drive or two for him to assess whether the offense is materially different. (Paraphrasing, it was one of the last questions he was asked in the presser the other day)

It didn't sound like we had done prep on OSU yet before the presser, but Hetherman also said that his impression was that OSU played with heavier personnel much more this year than when he coached against them at Rutgers in 22-23.

Agree with @AUcane that we need to jump out ahead early. OSU hasn't trailed by more than 6 points the entire year. They play offense at a very deliberate pace. If we are somehow able to get ahead by 2 scores early we could get them out of their comfort zone for the first time this year, forcing them to speed up their offense, play with less heavy personnel groups, etc. Even better if we get ahead early by running the ball right at them and taking time off the clock.

I believe it will be SEC refs and I don’t think they’ll let him get away with all that grabbing.

Who said we’re having ACC refs? That is completely false.. the refs have to be from an independent conference in the playoffs. You have an ACC team and a Big Ten team playing. So neither leagues can have refs for the game.

I think this is spot on. I'd expect Patricia to try and shut our run game down. He's going to force Beck to beat his defense. This is why it's imperative Beck plays well. If Beck's stat line looks something like 19-27, 210yds, 2 TDs I really like our chances on 12/31.

Yep to me this game comes down to Beck and Dawson.
I was shocked to hear Dawsons thoughts about the aTm game. Saiid he called a bad game, probably got to gimicky and even was late on a call that cost us 5.
He needs to be sharper and Carson needs to just rip it.
I hate to say it but use Toney as a decoy and let CJ and Marion win outside. Also, get Pringle and Marty in the game for some easy check downs.
Wish Lofton would give us more downfield in the pass game. Maybe this is his time.

I’m gonna say something here and I really believe it, even if he tries to take away our run game, I don’t think he can. They haven’t seen an offensive line/backfield combo like ours all season. Sometimes you gotta not overthink it and just beat them with what we’re better at than they are.

For me there is 2 place that concern me about Ohio State. Their QB just throwing the ball up and JJ and Tate just make insane plays to bail them out. Especially if they can't run the ball. And then Beck having a stinker and picks killing drives and momentum.

Their lurkers act like we are being delusional for hyping up our trenches. From a pure talent standpoint we have face more NFL talent and physical trench play, ND, UF(handled Texas who was Ohio 2nd best opponent faced), Texas A&M. We had more rush yards than each and held them all to less than 100 yards. Im not gonna discount losing to SMU and UL, but unless u are a canes fan, u are not gonna understand the dynamics of those losses and it sounds like excuses to explain. But u are not gonna face the team that loss those games. Seems like a 16-10 game either way. As a homer i think we will win but they are favorites for a reason. If CJ and Marion step up we might be ok.

Lol, no. Patricia is too ******* arrogant to do that. Have seen him too often, he has his style of defense and doesn't change regardless of whom he plays. It's his way or the highway.

There is a way to expose his defense, it's boring and repetitive, but it's the only way you'll get him. Throw the check down and pull everyone and their grandma on the O-Line. Run bunch formations till we dream about them at night. They hold gaps up front and have the LB clean up. Spams Liz coverage at the backend and lets the athletes deal with it, so forget the shot down the middle. Only chances we have on the perimeter is going up and getting it.

There's nothing fancy about his scheme or what he is doing. He is running the same BS over and over again and has elite players bail him out.

OSU is strong up the middle of their defense. McDonald, Reese, Styles and Downs is as strong as you'll see on the college level. They probably won't stop our rungame outright, but they have the talent to limit the effectiveness of our run game thus putting the game in Beck's hands.

100% this. Our ability to run the ball is the key to winning this game. I am not saying don't take shots down the field. Quite the opposite. But if we can't run the ball successfully against Taint we will need a miracle to win the game.

It's a **** shame with the talent we have on the OL that we averaged 4.2-4.3 ypc this year with our backs and receivers running the ball before the A&M game.

Last 5 games our RBs/WRs/Lofton have quietly averaged 5.5 ypc (I excluded CWH, who isn't going to get carries in the playoff, would be even better had I excluded Brown, who also is unlikely to get more than a couple of carries). A&M is not a good run defense, but we absolutely dominated them. It was great to see. The OL/TEs/WRs have been blocking much better the last 5 games.

(Probably didn't hurt that we stopped giving 1/3+ of our non-garbage time carries to two RBs who were averaging under 3.7 ypc between them)

Run the **** ball and beat Taint!
