Why do we play as if we have anything and I mean anything at all to lose? Why be so **** conservative during the game? You would think by watching miami games the last 6 or 7 years that all the pressure in the world is on the team to win lol as if Monday night a national championship was on the line. Absolutely blows my mind why not play aggressive and actually attempt to win the game instead of ***** footing around. I really will never understand it. WHAT IS THERE TO LOSE

Coaches coach aggressively when they are confident that they know what they are doing. Players play aggressively when they are confident they know what they are doing.

Boggles my mind. We have the most talented team on the field, just about every game. Tell the other teams to stop us if they can.

If you listen to the coaches and players talk, you will understand why we play timid and slow. All Golden and D'onofrio worry about is points given up on defense. They invite teams to get in the RedZone, and try to hold them to 3 points. I heard Chick say in an interview " different players set "picks" so other players can make plays." Buchanan talked about the DL stance, and I have seen that since Golden took over 4 years ago. They stand flat footed with both hands in the ground and generating no momentum. Golden was successful some what at Temple because in those conferences LB's can cover some WR's. You can't do that in the ACC. Coaches are too good, players are too good. They will exploit you. Golden is a good CEO, but I have said it many times, he just doesn't have the coaches around him he needs to be successful. The great teams have great Coordinators and that's something we lack tremendously. Talent is not the issue. We are not the most talented team by any means, but there is no way on earth our team should look the way they look on the field. Someone is always lost, someone is always out of position, someone is always missing a tackle. Our X's and O's is what is holding this program back. Not the players on the field.

I've come to the sad realization that Golden is stuck in the approach that he took while at Temple and is convinced that will work here.
I understood the reservation he had the first few years but this was the year that he needed to let the dogs loose.
His game plan and play calling should have been on full throttle. playing a Freshmen QB be damned.

You really had to start worrying when you could hear the alarming amount of distrust the coaches had in the players on D last year. Coaches coach scared, players play scared.

Thats exactly how you take south Florida speed and aggressiveness and chop the head off right there.

Our coaches are in a constant state of defense. They seem to focus most of their energy on worrying about what the other team is capable of doing to us instead of what they are capable of doing to the other team - even when we have an obvious talent advantage. Our coaches are the poster children for "Coaching Scared". As JHallCanes said, I really think that it stems from the fact that they are not confident in their ability to out-coach/think the opposing coaching staff and are hoping that if they play it conservatively and limit mistakes our talent will win out more often than not in the end.

What's so frustratingly infuriating is that we we are so basic, unchanging, and safe in everything we do that an opposing coaching staff can come in with a plan of attack and beat our heads in with it over and over again for most of the game because our coaches are so slow and so bad at making in-game adjustments. When I see that our coaches are surprised by something the opposing coaching staff throws at them at the beginning of the game I know that we are in deep trouble because they will :

1) have no answer for it

2) stumble upon a way to counter it but comically overuse their counter until they are stopped repeatedly

3) stumble upon a solution but then inexplicably go away from it and go back to beating their heads against the wall.

We coach and play scared to lose. The target continues to be on our backs, not the other way around. That's on Golden.

To the OP: With all due respect, you have the motivation backward. You don't play scared when you think you have nothing to lose. You open up and take chances. We play like we are protecting a 50 point lead, and take no chances. We play exactly like we have EVERYTHING to lose.

I think that's what OP is saying

The last time we were aggressive on offense was the first few minutes of the Florida game, last year. They were on their heels. Then I guess someone had a moment and thought we need to dial this back and conserve the lead.

the real answer is that F/A/G is just a ****** coach. he only knows one thing and that is this terrible Al Groh defense. he does not have the level of football IQ that allows for creativity and innovation

he sucks. period

The perfect example was that Lousivile Def Line dance in the bowl game. It completely discombobulated our coaches. Instead of just lining up and attacking that bull**** maneuver, we balled up in a fetal position out of fear. Pathetic.

In terms of scheme, Golden is married to the Groh defense.

In terms of motivation, Golden is stuck in the circa '80s Paterno mode. It's a very conservative, plodding style of play, where you wait for mistakes from the opponent. It's effectively the antithesis of the formerly dominant UM-style of attacking, intimidating, and forcing mistakes.

Obviously, combining Groh's defense with a plodding PSU style is a recipe for failure. And it's just awful to watch.

I do not believe we have the worst coaches individually...but collectively, yes. Nothing has been working with their philosophy and approach to the game...NOTHING!

The defensive philosophy is horrifyingly weak, the weakest I've seen @ Miami. They're not asking the D-Line to get vertical and be disruptive. The LB's should not be asked to repeatedly turn their backs to the LOS, nor should they be out covering a bunch formation.....Unless it's to smash a quick screen attempt.

The space left behind. It's a chess term, but it's applicable here. On the majority of snaps, you'll see LB's vacating their spot/alignment to cover an area, often with their backs to the LOS. Opposing TE's repeatedly settle in to the vacated spot and bingo...First down. Same goes with our interior linemen....They often stunt or the rush end will do as the LB's do and run out to the flat....Run play, there's no edge to set and they get burnt.

Underneath crosses are there any time a team wants to go to that well. A NT or rush end is asked to hold their point...essentially just stand and react to middle screens and QB/RB draws. The problem happening there, is....it's too effin easy for opposing offenses, 1) because you're not getting off a block by being stagnant 2) they never put that rush ends hand on the ground, so it's a horrible tendency.

Slant, skinny posts and 7 yrd curls go unchallenged and you will rarely if ever see a CB jump a route. Howard Jumped one last year and scored a TD...then promptly got reprimanded for freelancing.

I've made my feelings known about Coley...Who I believe has zero idea how to attack a offense....ZERO. He's a hash signal caller, which means....his little play call sheet has left has calls on one side and right hash plays on the other. The concept and personal packages are dictated by such and that's why he can't coordinate a first down or red zone score.

When Coley is scrimmaging against Dnof and whoever the heII is responsible for scout team...it's quite easy, because they're defensive concept is horrifyingly bad. And, you can't go broke taking a profit. Which is Coley's favourite offensive term. Problem is...he's offensively broke the minute he walks away from greentree.

While Heaps is clearly not the future, and has quit on two other programs. He's **** good at recognizing coverages and, after all, has learned under superior offensive minds, when compared to Coley.

It goes on and on and on....sadly, a Novel could be written about how bad it is...and it's worse at CB and Safety.
