What Does $4 mil Really Mean?

We'd probably have to pay $5 million to make it worthwhile for a name guy to come here from a power 5 school. Guys like Briles and Dan Mullen are already making 4 so its not even that much of a raise in those instances.

But "up to $4 million" means we can likely match anything that anyone will throw at rising guys like Herman and Fuente should we decide to target them. If the money is even we pretty much beat any of the jobs available besides USC unless the coach in question cares an excessive amount about the stadium/facilities stuff.

That makes sense but I'm really hesitant to believe that we as a school that has never spent would open the (relatively speaking) financial floodgates to promote a Herman or Fuente. I'm not saying that's the right mindset but I think the admin would expect some huge splash hire for that pricetag rather than a victory in a bidding war on an up and comer.

I think they can look around and see what the going rate for good rising coaches is currently. I believe McElwain for example is making $3 million plus.

Just under $4 mil actually. UiF has spent though. You may be right but I'm still having a hard time ever believing that we're going to be the place for a huge payday that Herman or Fuente will probably get if the list of openings continues to grow. That doesn't necessarily preclude them from spurning more money elsewhere to come here but I still can't see us winning or even wanting to win a bidding war for that type of candidate.

Well if we're serious about hiring the most desirable candidates we're going to have to pay up. More than likely though the offers those two will be fielding from other programs are going to be in the $3-$3.5 million range unless USCw decides to splurge. I don't think either is going to garner $4 million from any of the jobs currently available.
