What current head coaches do you consider elite in College Football?

Yeah I can't argue with that top 4 at all. But how long does Peterson get to stay up top without a national championship? I think he's a few years away from being viewed in a very similar way as Richt.

Jim as in Harbaugh? He's not even on a top 10 list.

Depends if you’re talking just college or not IMO

What did in the pros was impressive and certainly more than Saban achieved

HAsnt quite translated yet though in college but still early

It translated just fine at Stanford. I think what you mean is that we're waiting for him to do something impressive at Michigan.

Why do people continuously forget about Chris Peterson? Guy can build a top 10 team anywhere he wants. Patterson too. He took a mountain west team and moved them up to the big boys and is perennially competitive

Good point.

I was only commenting on the top 4 coaches he had in the elite category.

Jim Harbaugh is an enigma to me. He quickly built up a horrible Stanford program, quickly built up an abysmal 49ers organization, then gets his dream job at his alma mater and can't seem to be anything more than average. It's make or break year for him.

If it weren’t for Urban, Jim’s time at Michigan would be much more impressive...I don’t think he’s elite, but basically one guy owns his ***.

Championships tell us which TEAM is the best (and they don't even tell us that very accurately). They don't tell us which safety or quarterback is the best, and they don't tell us which coach is the best. Gene Chizik won a championship, but none of us confuse him with elite.
Why not Coker won one like Chizik it'll stick to them as something they've accomplished long after you and I aren't around.generations a 100 years from now will see it in the record books.coach's like woodson in basketball, coach k,bear Bryant,Nick saban will be called elite and it won't because they had the best players but by how many championships they've won

In fact our 86 team which on paper was one of the best teams ever but because it didn't win the championship will never be one of the best .

Harbuagh’s antics wear on people. To his credit, he’s 28-11 in three seasons at Michigan. Many of those loses were to Top 10 ranked teams, including three losses to Meyer. Even at 8-5 last season, three loses were at #2 PSU, at #5 Wisconsin, and at home to #8 Ohio State. Now, an elite coach would not lose all of those games. So, he has work to do.

The bad loss was the bowl game to Muschimp and South Carolina. Jim was a corch that day.

His pro-style offense is dependent on a top-tier QB. He had that at Stanford but has yet to recruit one at Michigan.

He plays old school ball power run game but the thing is if u not getting the best players and missing on the Najee Harris's of the world that **** aint going to work.

For those questioning Harbaugh, he took over 1-11 Stanford and 4 years later had them #3 in country, 12-1 with a 40-12 Orange Bowl win over VaTech. He then takes over the miserable 49ers and goes 13-3 first year with 3 straight NFC championship games with two average QBs. Look at Sabans NFL record with average QBs.

His first two years at Michigan would look a lot different if their punter just holds onto the snap against Michigan State (would have been 11-2) and they don’t have a bad spot against Ohio State (would have made the playoff.) This year with Patterson they’re gonna have a great shot at the playoff.
John Harbaugh wouldn't slurp Jim off this much, and of course, he is Jim's older brother.

Yeah, the ultimate measure of success is championships. And barring a corch effort, more often than not team with the most talent wins.

But sometimes the best coaching jobs are winning at all. Gary Patterson will never win a NC at TCU. Odds are against it, anyway. He will never have enough players unless he manages to recruit an elite talent at QB. Same with D’Antonio at Michigan State and Shaw at Stanford.

The measure is the body of work you consistently achieve with the resources and rosters you have. Coker lucked into the greatest college roster of the modern era, and almost went back-to-back undefeated NCs. He is far from elite. Chisik had a generational talent at QB with Cam Newton for two seasons. He is far from an elite HC and a DC somewhere.

He needs another Andrew Luck, or at least someone close.

Only a few elite coaches in football
Saban
Urban Meyer
Dabo swinney
Jimbo Fisher(he’s had sustained success and won a championship but without a trancesdant talent at qb he would be in that very good range with richt in the others too)

And a host of very good-good coaches after them
Do you get a deep piercing pain in your chest when you have to write those names? I'm down right terrified of even attempting it.

There are only two elite coaches and you know who they are. The rest are really good.

Their obscene budgets make them elite. Neither are elite with Xs and Os.

Richt's coaching created 3 Heisman finalists (2 winners and 1 runner-up) and likely none of the 3 guys make the ceremony player anywhere else.

RIght of course. He’s proven he can take teams almost all the way. Now that he has the resources I think he has to show it at Michigan.

I still consider him elite though

Obscene budgets alone do not make coaches elite, but yes it does help a lot. As you know, Harbaugh has lost head to head against Meyer despite his Michigan budget. Many coaches at Texas had enormous budgets and got tossed. Plus, Les Miles got booted at LSU despite having an LSU budget. The same program both he and Saban won a title with.

I'm not taking anything away from Richt. I'm one of his biggest fans. But far and away, Meyer and Saban proved that no matter what (big budget) program the land in, they will win a title.

I remember when we were corch searching after Gorlden got schit canned and there were many here that wanted Kyle Whittingham and thought he was elite.

Where are you ***aloons now?
