What can we expect from Guidry in year 2?

I really enjoyed the defensive approach last year and thought we saw a coach make some major changes to his scheme mid year because of injuries. That move to the 3-3-5 against Clemson was impressive e to say the least.

What do we think his plans are schematically this year? We have a lot more depth at edge and some questions at dt, so curious how that will effect the scheme. I know Guidry is a db guy, what can he do to get the most out of a mostly unproven group?

I was impressed that he made such a successful mid season scheme change.

What I'm not impressed with is how the defense played against UNC and UL. The D is the reason we lost. Hoping to not see #1 in pass coverage on anyone. Hoping to not see a DE drop 14 times a game only to be incapable of covering.

I hope to not see the CBs okay 10yds off the ball half the game but we may not have the skill to do otherwise.

Jury is still out on him but I am hopeful.

So me take on defense is yes they were not good in 2nd half vs. UNC or at all against Louisville.

UNC had some elite offensive talent, so their are going to be games in modern college football where your defense gets gashed. Clemson under Venables would have a few games per year where they get worked. Offenses are too good and too creative to shut them down every week.

I think Louisville game was a major letdown performance coming off tough loss against rival FSU. The defense was outstanding vs. FSU just the week before.

UL game was almost manny-esque with how the defense got cooked.. I know Brohm is legit but dam

We were really banged up by Louisville but agree it was a bad game plan.

I’m curious if we see a mix of 3-3-5 and 4 man fronts, I feel like the dl talent we have gives him some flexibility. I’m also curious if he would move porter around to try and take other teams #1 receivers. We didn’t see that last year and it cost us.

Let’s not forget Georgia Tech .
They moved the ball 75 yards on 21 seconds with no time outs!
That’s on Guidry, period.Don’t need great DBs or great pass rush to prevent TD.Any decent ( not good) DC in College prevents TD
Remember Rutgers running the ball at will against the D when everyone knew it was coming. Could not game plan to stop it.

It’s big year for Guidry to show he belongs.

True. But Venerables is established. Guidry has yet to do so. So for me the juries still out but I'm optimistic with what I've seen.

Agreed.

Last year I think our D was either effective when there was a massive talent difference or we were going against certain types of offenses.

True story. Particularly since he works with the safeties. How Kam did what he did is beyond me. He must have known the situation. Someone coached him to do that or someone allowed him to do that.

GT had 175 yards FOR THE ENTIRE GAME before that drive. I don’t know what the school record is for fewest yards allowed in an ACC game, but I’ll bet it was in jeopardy that night. That game was 0.000% on the defense.

The first half of that game for GT:

3 and out
3 and out
4 and out (their only first down came on a penalty)
Interception
3 and out

And the game was 3-0. It should have been 17-0 and there is no kneel down/fumble/cluster****.

Yeah, you can’t let them go 76 yards on the last drive of the game. But the game was over. We ran out the clock, it’s victory formation time, start unbuckling your shoulder pads and blowing kisses at your old lady in the stands, we’re 5-0. Then all of a sudden wait, we gotta go back on the field? That game was 0.0000% on the defense they were absolutely lights out all night except for one drive. GT finishes with 175 yards on 50 plays if Mario just doesn’t make the dumbest coaching decision of all-time.

Guidry and the defense had a couple stinkers. GT wasn’t one of them.

You are missing the point. It’s about the last 21 seconds, they had 75 yards to go with no time outs.
Any DC knows you play an umbrella D with 4 DBs at goal line and tell them in no uncertain terms : DO NOT LET ANYBODY GET BEHIND YOU!
Would Saban, Smart, Venebles allow it?

Hopefully he learns from the Louisville game when they were intentionally running our db’s into each other to free up a receiver. That was the only game Guidry ****ed me off because they kept doing and he didn’t adapt.

Did Guidry even have a headset on? The game was over. He was probably drunk by that time. If his head coach just calls victory formation we’re sitting here talking about the 2023 Georgia Tech game being one of the most dominant defensive performances in the history of the school. I’m not gonna crucify the guy for his defense giving up plays when they had zero business even being on the field. 175 yards for an entire game against a good offense in today’s game is absurd.

“We gotta go back out on the field” is some fiesta bowl type quotage.

Clear-cut troll. Instead of mentioning how Walker, Maye or Hampton gashed us against UNC or how we couldn’t stop slow TE crossing routes against UL you pick the the two losses the rest of America thinks is the most embarrassing. Typical.

You’d think these Miami-hating clowns would be more clever with their material. Guess those state school diploma mills can’t beat us in the classroom either.

Think again Buddy Ryan.
They were at our 44 with 10 seconds left, down by 3.
"Your" D gives them an easy 15-20 yard out and a 30 yard FG attempt to tie.

Both Couch and Kam screwed up.
That wasn't on Guidry.

What defensive call is it for the safety to jump a route in the middle of the field and let his man get behind him with maybe 5 seconds left in the game? At some point you need to hold a player responsible for clearly ******* up. If the qb runs, Couch (I think) tackles him in bounds and the game is over.
