I hear people hype up our D a lot. But I need to see them be a lot better than last year.
Specifically, don’t let a brand new and/or average QB set personal/team records on us. When we discussed Diaz’s defense at Miss State the year before he came here, the thing that scared me the most was receivers seemingly being uncovered regularly. Arkansas, an abysmal passing team, shredded the fck out of him.
Last year, we saw a lot of that same stuff. I’d expect LSU to try to get Burrow comfortable with some short passes early. If we let him settle in hitting wide open receivers for first down after first down, like we did Bryant, Benkert, and Wisconsin’s QB, it could be problematic for us.
Rosier is the common theme amongst the dopey. But I expect he’ll either be average or improve a bit. I think he’ll be good enough for us to beat LSU. We need to exploit what SHOULD BE a gigantic advantage for us in this game, and that’s our D versus their horrible O with a QB making his first start.
Bottom line, can this defense(which is loaded with NFL talent all over) get off the field more consistently on 3rd and long? It's really that simple.
Last year too many teams were able to shred Diaz's units for long stretches. And while the 'Turnover Chain' is great, the reality having that many TO's again is highly unlikely. This is a variable that generally changes from year to year. So how do you mitigate that? By being more sound on 3rd downs and forcing more short drives and consistently being able to flip the field for your offense
In many ways this is on Diaz, yeah in Starkvegas he may have not had great material to work with but at Miami, this season? Yeah, he's gotta plenty of talent at his disposal all over
. t. k. j. damm man you pretty much nailed it, but Richt getting two unsportsman in first game, I wishI'd like to see the following
1) O-line is at least average for both run and pass
2) Malik's completion percentage is 60ish %
3) Richt gets more creative on offense and does screens, motions, etc. (Not at all hard to do)
4) Diaz actually adjust on 3rd down and not just give the 8 yard completions over the middle of the field over and over again.
5) Don't want to see bad QBs look amazing every game
6) Richt get 2 unsportsmanlike penalties this year
Couldn’t agree more, well saidI hear people hype up our D a lot. But I need to see them be a lot better than last year.

Fumble-rooskie?

Truth is we had a pedestrian pass-rush last season when it counted. The edge-rushing talent got a huge upgrade this season and I expect a lot more pressure on the QB. I also expect better coverage with the striker position. Manny made a great decision to shut down the run last year and he gambled our pass-rush would win 3rd & long, but we weren't flexible enough and got shredded too often. This year he tweaked the personnel and spread the stakes more evenly, if not very much in our favor. I expect better coverage and just as many turnovers..
If the front 4 can hold the point enough to get 3rd & longs, we have more edge specialists (Garvin, Jackson, Rousseau, Patchan, Joyner, Carter) than last year to pressure the QB and let our DBs (who don't suck) do what they do. Way too much experience returning and talent on the back end to not be a faster defense.
I expect dudes to fly around and make plays.
