can someone let me know again why we are thinking Gundy is going to leave OSU for us ?
Exactly how I see it, OP. This is the ultimate diamond in the rough for any ambitious HC. To be kicking around fired losers and retreads is ridiculous. Shoot for the moon.
Whoever disagrees with this is being shortsighted. I think only a handful do.
Now, what do both of you (@WhatTheHell) say if or when we can't land one of those guys. The rhetoric is one thing. Making it happen is unfortunately another thing altogether. And, that doesn't make it right. It just makes it a possible reality.
So, what do you do if or when we shoot for the moon and miss?
As long as they pitch guys like Patterson and the other monsters, then I'm good with moving to the next tier. If the next tier (Herman) also rejects you, then I think you need better pitch men.
I think the pitch to guys like Patterson and Gundy are easier than many think. You tell Patterson "the job is yours. No interview. Sign and move in." I wouldn't be surprised if he realizes that he's in trouble next year at TCU without Boykin and Doctson. He could definitely slide next year to 8 wins. He needs to have a transcendent QB like Boykin to win at TCU; he doesn't need that here.
Gundy, it has been rumored loudly, has had a lot of problems with the brass at OSU. He will likely drop a game soon and find himself on the outside of the playoff picture. Maybe it's time for him to make a move.

We're on here talking about the Alabama offensive line coach, whose claim to fame is being humiliated and walking across a parking lot at FIU with a box full of his shlt. We're over here talking about coordinators. We're discussing a dude named Dino Babers for fvck's sake. What are we doing here? Really.
Miami plays in the single worst division in college football. Miami and Fort Lauderdale are the leaders for active NFL players with a total of 51. There is no better job in the country right now for an ambitious coach that wants to come down here and win games. You are surrounded by the best talent this nation has to offer and you get to bring them into battle every week against an assortment of cupcakes. Any coach looking to advance his career, or any guy who feels maxed out at his current gig and wants to think bigger, would come running down here in a second.
I think we're letting this school off the hook by offering up guys like Cristobal and Chud. F that. They need to spend money. They need to hire an actual football coach, not some "oh well ya know he COULD be good if he hires great coordinators" type of coach, and definitely not a "great recruiter." What the **** is this garbage? We are Miami.
We have an unbelievable opportunity here for the taking for any savage coach that wants to come fvck with talent and speed he's only dreamed of having at his disposal. We need to be thinking bigger, aiming higher, and expecting more. We need to hold the administration and the CornBreath search firm to a high standard. Get us a head coach from a power 5 conference that's done more with less. Forget ties, forget MIAMI GUYZ. Find a mean sumbltch that wants to tear da club up.
This job is an amazing opportunity. It's time we stop acting like the hot chick with no self-esteem.
Get me a Gundy, Patterson, Mullen, Chip, Dantonio, etc or gtfo of my sight.

Not only is Gundy beefin' with T Boone, he's seriously considered the Tennessee job and was dying for an offer from UF. He's the type of dude that's been locked in that town forever and has hit the ceiling.
That's a hungry, ornery, sumbltch of a coach this program needs to be fvckin with.
Exactly how I see it with Gundy. That guy does nothing but produce great offenses every year, and his coaching staff is regularly raided because he's got such a good eye for assistants. This current DC of his, Spencer, does a good job of coaching defense in the modern world. His guys play like savages. They don't shut anyone down because no one shuts anyone down in the Big 12, but they play very hard and they get key stops and force mistakes.
Remember the FSU game last year? That OSU defense beat the **** out of FSU in that game. They were smashing people and playing exceptionally fast.
If you've got an open gig at UM, you need to sell that **** to some killers. Don't sit back and wait for a bunch of fired schlubs to come to your door in their tattered clothes begging for the job. Go out there and pitch that job to some killers.

You're right, but the media knows we are cheap as **** when hiring coaches and assistants. Plus there is the lack of facilities, particularly a stadium on campus or near the school. We're just never going to interest a top level coach the way we operate this program. I hate this, but it is what it is.

Agree with the OP.
And I'm on record, I like Mullen. I think he would do really well here.
Pitch him, show him the progress that's been made at Miami with facilities. Show him the plan for the indoor practice facility, and that he gets the budget to hire the staff he thinks can win at the highest level. Remind him that he lost his DC to Florida, and that Miss State will always be 2nd Class in that conference. Make it clear that his options are to compete for 2nd or 3rd in the SEC West every year, or win the ACC every year.
Mullen has to be tired of getting his head beat in by Bama. Ole Miss runs that state. He also has to play Arkansas, LSU, and aTm EVERY year. And like Patterson, he's also losing his "franchise" QB after this season ...
And if we miss on Mullen ... Go get Herman or Fuente.
Truth is, like recruiting, if those guys have a legit interest in the program, they won't be bothered by Miami pursuing a more established coach first. If they use that as the reason to turn us down, they were looking for a reason to turn us down.
We need to swing big on this hire ... And not be worried about getting rejections.
Worst case, Butch gets the job. And if that happens after a thorough search, nobody will gripe about that!

We have been saying this for 7-8 years now..And nobody seems to think this way but us. And we got stuck with Shannon and Golden. I am at the point to where I just want a guy who wants the **** job. (BUTCH) All this "diamond in the rough" sounds like the same stuff we have been saying for years only to get let down.
Is this a great job? Of course! We are fans and we know what we have here and that we are a sleeping giant.
Do people nationally think this is a great job? (in coaching circles).. Yet to be determined. History is not on our side unfortunately when it comes to this.
The fact that we chose the wrong HCs doesn't diminish the greatness of the job. You're conflating separate issues. Plenty of great programs have hired really bad HCs over the years. They've had long stretches of bad hires, and it's not because the job wasn't great; it's because they gave it to the wrong guys.
Southern Cal, LSU, Bama, UF, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma and many other marquee programs have struggled for long stretches with bad HC hires. Do you think those are bad jobs? Or did they just make bad choices?

Missed the point, Chise...My point was that we all thought it was a great job and that people would be falling over themselves to get in here and coach the "U" only to have everyone give us the "Not interested but thanks for the call" lingo year after year. How you think we got stuck with Golden? He was probably the 5-6th guy on our coaching list.
All im saying is im not falling for it again. All this "secret source" talk about how Strong, Pagano, Herman and other guys are "secretly" interested sounds like BS. I legit think the only guys that are interested are Mario, Chud (when Pagano gets fired) and Butch. Maybe guys like JPruitt or MStoops because they are desperate to get out of their situations.
can someone let me know again why we are thinking Gundy is going to leave OSU for us ?
Stop being small-minded. It is not about whether he would leave or not. It is about how our University should be approaching this search.

I'm up for that.
With some of the Cristobal insanity I keep hearing, I think you may be deeply disappointed.

He is not being small-minded, his post has merit. Gundy was born in Oklahoma, played at Oklahoma State, has been a coach at OKST since 2001, and at the end of this season will likely get a raise equal to or more than what we are going to pay a coach. Not saying you don't ask but the odds are VERY low.
