Takeaways: As I said in this space last week, we finally got our stat padding game, and I expected the overall numbers to look a LOT better this week. Whooo buddy, do they ever. That's what a game with a yards margin of 572-158 will do for you. We are now essentially a Top 7 offense in the country. Yards per play, points per game, explosive rate, #2 in adjusted EPA/play success rate (4th), havoc rate allowed (1st), etc. Our starting quarterback has 12 incompletions and 14 touchdowns, for Christ's sake. We had a hiccup for about a quarter and a half against Wake, but other than that, when the starters have been in, this offense has been absolutely humming. Our explosive plays are back to how things looked in 2024 (or close) as opposed to the Beck offense, as many of us expected. 6.3 plays per game of 20+ yards is elite, in 2024 we averaged 7.75, which was BY FAR the most explosive offense in America. So we're not far off. You're not going to find a metric anywhere that will tell you Miami is anything but a ~Top 7-8 offense in America, which is championship worthy. But obviously we've had a massive athlete advantage in our 3 games, so it's imperative to keep pushing. I did a whole thread yesterday on Mensah's numbers, which are literally historic. The passing offense is honestly beyond explanation, I don't really have any way to describe what we're watching, other than historic. What he's doing would be impressive if we were playing against air in the IPF...against real teams in real games is incomprehensible. And, again Central Michigan, but just about every other team has played a meh G6 team too, our backs had 29 carries for 188 yards, which is 6.48 yards per carry. By far the best of the season. 2024 we scored 42.9 PPG....so far this year, 43.3. Go drop another 40 ball on Clemson on the road and I will really be telling lies.
On defense, pretty much more of the same, against an overwhelmed opponent. The great: You just can't run on this team right now. We are #1 in the country in rushing yards allowed per game, Central Michigan got 21 yards on 25 carries as a team, we have given up three runs of 10+ yards in 3 games (#1 in the country), and only 2 teams are giving up less yards per carry (but both have way more sacks than we do, which count as rushing attempts). Again, very interested in seeing how the front holds up against Clemson, I'm not expecting them to do much but they are a top half of the country rushing operation, and you know Dabo is going to try to keep our offense off the field, and hide his QB. The not so great: We are giving up way too many completions. We're down to 72nd in the country in completion percentage allowed. However, it's all dink and dunk type stuff. We're still Top 30 in yards per attempt, and passer rating allowed. We've only given up 1 passing play of 30+ yards in 3 games. So I'm not sure what the emphasis really is from Heatherman right now. Obviously he feels he can control the run game with his front 7, and he's OK giving up completions as long as they're short, because he has you behind the sticks a lot. But we have to get off the field on 3rd down better, and we have to tighten up the coverage some. Bottom line, 9.7 PPG allowed is #3 in America. You're not going to lose a lot of games giving up 10 points every time you go out there. But overall the defense can, and I think will improve if/when we get back a couple corners. You still have kids playing out of position, and we're banged up. Hopefully Moten is healthy going forward. Hopefully we get Lucas and Jaboree by mid-season. You're not going to take away everything, so if you are really going to be an elite run unit all season, and you can get 2 of your top 5 preseason corners back, we should be fine.
Lastly...penalties. Just abysmal on Saturday, and we're now back in Mario territory. 113th in penalties per game, 124th in yards. We did tighten it up a lot in the playoffs last year, but you're not going to win close games with this many penalties. Go have 8 penalties for 80 yards against Notre Dame and see what happens. So, obviously, those numbers suck and need to somehow be better in the games against better teams.
Overall, a really solid football team. Offense is ahead of the defense right now, but the defense has been very good overall, and we're playing complementary football. Now the level of athlete increases as we ramp into October. Clemson, bye week, FSU, Pitt, UNC in October isn't a gauntlet by any means, but all 4 of those teams likely have better athletes overall than anyone we've played thus far (although Wake really impressed me, I said it as much in the post-game and look what they just did. That's a very good football team, I don't care what anyone outside this fanbase has to say). So let's see how this goes the next few weeks. Go up to Clemson, get 3.5+ points per drive when we have the football, absolutely embarrass their freshman QB, and let's put a hurting on those boys and get home to get some rest. We have 3 straight weeks at home after Saturday night, a bye week, then FSU, then Pitt. We don't have to go anywhere until Halloween. Go up there, drop 40+, knock them around, make their fans boo Dabo, and get home safe. 1-0.
