Agree with this.
It's why I never knocked Richt for not being able to keep most of the top talent.
But wanting Cam newton to play TE is a HUGE error, IMO. So is the miss on Deshaun Watson. Those guys are difference makers on offense, and they could have been had if they were priorities, IMO.
Lets be fair....
Who would you rather have as your QB? Tim Tebow or Cam Newton.
Because Cam was on Florida while being coached by Urban when Tebow got the starting nod.
Hindsight is always twenty twenty.
Also with Watson he committed to Clemson early on, the 10th grade. He camped and they loved him and were on him from the beginning. They are the main reason that kid beleived in hmself at a time when he was having a rought life. He basically shut it down and made it clear he wasnt going anywhere else. Gainesville Ga is basically a Clemson clone and Clemson is about as close to Gainesville as Georgia is. Richt and Bobo worked their asses off trying to land Watson but this is a character kid who wasnt about to break his relationship with Sweeney after how he was there for him thru so much. Much respect for that kid.
I didn't know the Watson background stuff. I get that, and respect it.
But I know Gainesville's proximity to UGA ... No way Clemson should have been on him first, IMO. I suspect it had more to do with Watson fitting Clemson's style of offense more than he fit at UGA.
The same with Cam ... A "potential weakness" for Richt might be identifying kids who aren't exact fits for what khe prefers. With Cam and/or Watson at UGA, the narrative on Richt might be completely different ...
Yeah but the point about Cam was that no one knew what he was. Not even Urban.
Not sure that's accurate ... Newton was a 5-star recruit. Number 2 QB in the nation, number 2 player in the state (behind Eric Berry), and number 28 player in the country.

Cam Newton wasn't some "under the radar" find, or a late bloomer ... He was a kid UGA wanted to play at TE.
Can you blame a coach for passing on an insanely talented kid who doesn't fit his system?
