I remember last year when we pretty much stifled UF's run game and caused 5 turnovers and the talk was that our defense was gonna be ok, til we found out what UF really was on offense.....
Petrino is the man, but they had a first time starter and two of their best playmakers out, plus lets see how good this UL team really is after they play a full season. Its obvious the talent is there to be competitive, our DL for once didnt look like it played on skates, which was encouraging but as mentioned many times already, there was a ton to be scared and frustrated about.
We were scared to attack a first time starter that isnt exactly an all world prospect. Rushing 3 in most cases is stupid even when its 3rd and long, but rushing three 300lbers is retarded. Look at the results we had when we rushed 4 or 5 against the kid, we had pressure that led to two turnovers. Second we arent playing Tom Brady here, how are we not allowing our elite athletes in the secondary press the issue and play man coverage while we unleash pressure every time we were in obvious passing situations? The secondary is the one place on defense that we have some experience and elite physical talent. Let the kids try and make some plays.
Here is the reality of the matter with our defense. As the talent improves it will get better, but it just will never be elite. One because we refuse to play to our own personnel's strengths and two because the staff just cant seem to hone in on taking advantage of what is given to them. This whole we will not let the offense dictate what we do can have it's advantages, but if you are boxing against an opponent who cant defend the body you dont avoid sending shots there because it isnt part of your philosophy....
