We should have burned the RS on Perry this year....

and I don't mean starting him or even causing a QB controversy. I mean giving him some snaps as the clear # 2 ahead of Sherriffs. A series per game in some( not all) games and some Victory formation kneel downs.

And yes ,I understand about him not being " ready" to run the offense, not knowing how to breakdown film, etc. I get it, and if Rosier had gone down I would have not started Perry for those reasons.

I do think that if he had gotten in some garbage time snaps in a few games( and I realize we didn't have many easy games where he could have gotten them) then come next year, if he is the starter, he at least has some snaps of experience come the season opener that isn't Bethune Cookman or FAMU, but rather LSU on the road. A raw , first time start with ZERO snaps Vs LSU isn't great for confidence( on National TV and on the road).

Further, IF he turns out to be a great QB, he starts 2 seasons and leaves anyway after his 3rd year. If he isn't a top shelf QB, someone else ( JW) ends up starting and the " saved" year isn't of any value.

So to me, the benefit of giving him a bit of game experience outweighs the gain of a 4rth year in the program that I think either (a) doesn't come to be because he's awesome and declares for the draft after his 3rd year , or (B) he stays here for his 4rth( or 5th) year but he's not the starter and has been bypassed by Williams, or others, on the depth chart.

The only reason to have shirted him is if we think he is going to be a 3 year starter which is a rarity in CFB these days.

So, while I get the RS idea, to me its not as valuableon skill position guys and is better suited for linemen that need the extra year to bulk up ,etc.

It's a tough call because we don't have access to his performance in practice, his comfort level, etc. But I think the point is well taken. What is the value of those extra game snaps vs. the value of the redshirt? I suppose the staff has earned enough trust to measure and make that choice. I also know that despite the ridicule OP is getting, that most of you wouldn't be comfortable walking into an away game against an SEC power with a guy at QB who's never seen a live snap.

Unfortunately, we didn't even really get a chance to do it because so many of our games were tight, which renders the discussion largely academic.

OP is correct. No reason he shouldnt have gotten burn over Evan. Perry isnt staying for a RS senior year. Richt wasted a year opportunity to get him real experience.

Difference between good and great coaches. Saban had Tua ready if need be and in great position next year QB wise.

Maybe Richt read this board and saw that Evan was the **** according to some QB gurus here.....

Saban not going to happy when Hurts xfers and he's stuck with a true soph backed up by a true freshman or upper classmen that couldn't sniff the field.

Put this guy in there when Tua gets hurt.
