we paid too much money in the secondary for off coverage

This bunch loses games in the tunnel they don’t come on the field with any fire. The team is flat and boring. It’s just like any other job you still get paid even if you had an off day.

Our defense has been excellent this szn stop it, we lost 2 games because of an inept offense and Carson Beck being trash
That has nothing to do with what OP is saying. This offseason we went out and acquired Xavier Lucas, Ethan O’Connor and Charles Brantley to add to what we already had on the rooster giving us one of the deepest CB rooms in the nation. In addition to this we added Keionte Scott at Nickel plus Zechariah Poyser and Jakobe Thomas at Safety who have all been playing at a high level. Add a DL who has been one of the most disruptive in the country and among the leaders in QB pressures. Why are our CBs constantly bailing or in off coverage? Why aren't we challenging opposing WRs? Why are we giving up a career high in passing yards to Kevin Jennings?

Hetherman has done a very good job improving our defense and he isn't among the long list of reasons why we have underachieved this year. That being said, the OP asks a valid question and this particular area has been the one aspect of Hetherman's defense that I frankly do not care for.

HeatherMan still thinking he’s playing redzone roulette bend but don’t break big ten ball

But honestly that Hudson kid torched us. He’s good. I still see Lucas as a bit raw but monster potential.

But seriously let’s stop with the defensive scrutiny. The failure of this season lies purely with the offensive coaching/philosophy. The defense hasn’t given up 30 yet. And only gave up some points to smu because of overtime. The offense is awful. Reminds me of 2018 but with a higher price tag and blue chip ratio.

I agree with everything u said but complaining about the defense is overdoing it to me, yes the underneath bail technique gets frustrating but if You take a step back n look at their overall performance they’ve played great all year collectively other then a sleepy start against Louisville. Against SMU we held them to 20 points in regulation and 7 came as a direct result from the offense ******* up again. I know we want perfection here but if the offense just plays average or slightly above average we are 8-0, complete reverse of last year ironically.

The fact that so many poRsters are blaming the defense goes to show they’re just as clueless as the head coRch.

I could be misremembering but points are ultimately what matters and the team with more of them wins. Holding an offense to 20 points should win you every game you play in CFB.

That could be the problem though. Corch Mario thinks this is golf and thus wants his offense to play slow and shoot as low as possible score as possible.

if we could literally put up 28 points, which isnt a lot in 2025 offensive football, wed win.

we finally have size and length (pause) but we don't challenge guys at the line ... free releases without rerouting ... a consistent theme of playing not to get beat this year ...
It’s weird to me. It’s the reason Bain has very little sacks. I also think it hurts our turnover margin. Teams come in game planning quick hits and we just give it to them.

I'm not blaming game results on anything to do with the defense. This is just a discussion about why Heatherman likes off coverage so much. He's been great but this aspect of his style is something I don't quite understand. The offense being predictable and plodding and this offensive staff playing not to lose plus undisciplined penalties and horrific coaching blunders are why we lost.

It's the Miami way I suppose. Never make it easy. Always make it more challenging and always snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I understand but it's not complaining. It's a few fans discussing a technical/schematic aspect of the new DC's defense that we don't quite understand yet. This is a forum for discussion and I find this current subject to be very interesting and discussing it with others who are more knowledgeable than myself will give me greater insight into the game. I would like @Memnon @Lance Roffers @Coach Macho and @gogeta4 to all chime in as I would welcome their thoughts on the subject.

Yeah I struggle to understand the philosophy behind the off coverage as well. It may be a bend don’t break thing but with the way our offense looks it’s not a good complimentary strategy.

"State Champs!!!"
Probably the part that is at the heart of all the frustration

Beat ND, UiF, and FSU and somehow the season is gonna be a failure

It’s one of those nightmare hypotheticals someone brings up in the offseason where they ask to pick between two things like what would you rather…

Little easier when UiF and FSU are down so bad but wins are wins

No question about it. We were even given a mulligan on one game, but we spun up another. Mario's floor and ceiling appear to be the same. That's impressive.
