I wouldn’t say top job, they were really only a good program because of how Chris Petersen built them up, before the Petersen era Rick Neuheisel had one good season there & before him the Legend Don James (Saban’s mentor) had them rolling in the early 90’s & even won a Natty in 91.
But all the other coaches in between like Tyrone Willingham & Sark all failed pretty hard at Washington.
On it’s face it’s not a good job, it can be a good job but it takes a certain type of coach to run it, they don’t have great access to recruits, although the Northwest does have some talented players, but Washington basically has to recruit locally in Washington & Oregon, plus reach into Cali, Nevada & Utah (for the Polynesian kids) in order to really maximize their recruiting pool.
But UW is a program that needs a really smart coach who can do more with less, the kind of coach that isn’t reliant upon loading up on 4-star players, but can find gems out of JUCO & Grad transfers & play smart well executed football, they’re a team that wins with detail & precision by being well coached, they’ll never out athlete or out talent anybody.
Guys like Kalen DeBoer, Tyson Helton, Blake Anderson would all fit there if they were interested.
Jonathan Smith, the current HC at Oregon St who is a Chris Petersen disciple from the Boise St days & was his OC for 3 years at UW, he would do well going back to UW as well, but idk if he’d wanna leave Or St because he’s an Or st alum as well.
