Our avg start was the 23.8 yard line and the national average is 29.0. TBF, this includes punts, but looking at the KOs only.
- 1st return penalty holding to 8 yardline, w/o penalty only got to 22, fair catch would be the 25. Fail
- 2nd return 16 yard run to the 20, fair catch would be 25. Fail
- 3rd return 21 yard return to the 36 (due to penalty on PAT), unnecessary roughness, start at 12. Fail
- 4th return Touchback, start at 25, finally ! Success
-5th return Safety punt return, run from the 20 to 37. Success

Until further notice the team should just take the 25 yard starting point. 2/4 returns would not have made it regardless of penalties. 2/4 returns had penalties. Stop running it out!
Special teams are a mess of bad returns, terrible coverage, penalties and blocked kicks..

I’m not mad about the FG attempt. We don’t know anything about these kickers yet.

Let’s see if the kicker has the juice to hit a long FG in a moderately stressful situation. I didn’t think that game was truly in jeopardy so it’s a good rep to have. Id rather find out now than in Fake Death Valley or South Bend.

Purdue might be better than we think or at least they better be at the end of the season.

On the oline:
Regardless of what coaches preach, the standard is what they have to work with or what they are willing to accept.
If 65 is what you accept then that is your standard or your best option.
I’ve heard “the o-line is will be different” really?

It appears that 65 and the other interior are our best option.

I say that because our most expensive and most important player requires the most protection and getting 65 snaps “for assessment or experience” is an extremely risky experiment that doesn’t match our coach’s dna.

I doubt they put 65 out there just so he can get some real time snaps. Purdue was not the time imo to that and I doubt that’s the case.

He’s out there because that’s our best dude. And if he isn’t then this is just malpractice considering how hard our backs are having to work in both pass pro and running the ball and our qb looked like he was starting to get skiddish because he was getting hit.

It looks like they want to run last year’s offense with an oline that may not be able to run it.

I'm convinced that guy is drunk. But this team does have a ton to clean up and still is light-years above everyone in conference
Not just directing at you but some need to watch other games. Only ranked teams who havent shown any warts are UGA and Indiana and they have only played 1 bad P4 team (Arkansas) between the 2 of them. Everyone else has a ton to clean up.

Special teams as a whole was complete fail and like they didn't practice.. I guess back 2 work and drawing board
I just hide my eyes on special teams and pray for the bare minimum

ST has always sucked, and probably will always suck under Mario if it hasn't gotten better already.

Mario’s bone headed decisions are becoming much less frequent, but that one was certainly a head scratcher.
Having more talent than everyone on the schedule except ND means less close games = less clock management decisions. The chance to commit errors has been squeezed via acquisition.

Yet he went 0-2 in those decisions last week. End of half and FG
Annoyed me they cared more about scoring with no time left than just scoring at all. I understand if you manage it perfectly, you leave little time in the half. But gd it scoring a td is more important than a clock. Like they revel in any chance to take the foot off the gas.

Only two reasons our entire special teams play is not F-

1. Mali at punt returner. His chances to return a punt are minimal, but he catches everything and never lets anything go over his head. Even with Mali back there, it's turned into a nightmare this year (not Mali's fault). Damari is doing his best to make sure Mali never has a chance to return a punt ever again.

2. Weinberg on KO. He boots everything into the end zone, thus not allowing our KO coverage team to get exposed. It will happen soon when teams start returning his deep kicks, knowing they have a good shot of returning it past the 25-yard line with our porous KO coverage unit.
